Took the plunge.

Took a buddy of mine down to Hero Gear last Saturday (Yeah I'm dragging but in posting).

While there I bit the bullet and picked up a stripped Tactical Innovations lower for my AR build. I would like to think the guys at Hero Gear for the insight and suggestions. It was greatly appreciated. This will be my first AR. Wanted to pick up a complete weapon but with the Indy MotoGP race tying up most of my extra money and wanting one before election time, just in case, I decided this was the best option. Plus I like knowing how things go together and work. What better way then putting the whole thing together.

Now is the fun part of deciding what I want to go with it. 2 Stage trigger, fire control, good stock, quad rail and multiple uppers. Hey it does say Multi Caliber on the side, so why not. Am I forgetting anything? Looking to build it on the cheap but not skimp. I want a shooter and don't need alot of bells and whistles, even though it will end up with some.

Congrats! I haven't built one, but have a RRA M4 and a Colt HBar. Gotta love an AR!

Congrats. Yes, the guys at Hero Gear have been a great help during my AR build. Shawn (TPS-Robocop) was also a great help.

Good luck on the "cheap" part. I found out quickly, there is no such thing as cheap when it comes to a fairly good quality build. I had intentions of doing the same, but it turned out much different. I figured that I'd be better off doing it right the first time, rather than doing it half-a$$, only to spend even more money getting it how I really wanted.

You should take a look through my AR build thread. It was also my first build, and everyone was more than helpful with giving me lots of good info. You'll probably save yourself lots of question asking by reading through it.

Guess I should have said cheaper. Don't need highend but want stuff that will hold up and last. Yeah I know you get what you pay for and that makes the circle complete. Going to be watching for good deals.

It is fun to learn though, nothing to it.

When I talk to people about this same subject, I ask them if they built there first 1911 or 30-06?

Same thing, just a different gun.

ETA: My point is that there is nothing special about this except for the looks.

Ya'll are making me jealous talking about AR's. Got my mind made up on building a varmint rifle AR, just don't have the funds.

Large part of that savings is that you're only paying the federal excise tax on just the cost of the stripped lower instead of the complete rife.

There is no FET on lowers.

You are saving FET by buying and assembling a rifle from parts/kit rather than buying a complete rifle from a licensed manufacturer, which is required to pay (which they then factor into their cost) 11% FET on all rifles manufactured.
