Is there a charge for a background check?

I've never heard of anybody in NC charging for a "background check" when you purchase a firearm, yet here in TN I see a gun shop doing so. Is that normal here? I thought the NICS/federal check was free.

NICS is free, but TN uses TICS (Tennessee Instant Check System) run by TBI (Tennessee Bureau of Investigation) as intermediary, and there is a $10 fee per 4473 as per state law.

We are a "full participant point of contact" state for NICS, as an option under the federal system:

So, box 22 on the NFA form doesn't apply in TN because of the TCIS middleman? I know GA doesn’t do NCIS for NFA if it's a trust.

I assume by "NFA form" you mean the NFA exception on the 4473 in box 22.

I don't know TICS rules for that. TICS wants to check serial number, unlike NCIS, so maybe has to still be submitted but they just don't pass it along to NICS, I really have no idea.

If nobody else replies you might ping Mike (LawEnforcementSalesTN) to respond here, since he handles NFA transfers frequently.
