16" 6.5 Grendel?

Recommended Posts

I stumbled across a 16" bbl in 6.5 Grendel on the web. I know the grendel shines as a long range tool out of a longer AR barrel, but how effective is it from a 16"? I haven't put any numbers into a ballistics program yet. Does this combo have any real advantage over other calibers from a 16"?

There is a LOT of info on 6.5G ballistics.

Look on ar15.com.  There is a section on 6.5G.  Lots of data on stickies.

Likewise, at Alexander arms there is plenty of information.

The 6.5G is superior to the 5.56 from comparable barrel lengths at any distance.

The 6.5G and 6.8 are very similar in effectiveness.  There are factory 6.5 loads that outshine the 6.8 at longer range, and 6.8 factory loads that are more effective from short barrels (14" and under).

I recently built a 16 inch Grendel using the Alexander arms lightweight barrel and I'm in love with that little rifle. Very lightweight set up and the round hits hard on steel at 100.  the 223's just tap the steel where the Grendel smacks the .... out of it.  I built this one to shoot the wolf steel cased ammo. That ammo is under .30 cents around and I'm getting 1.5 groups with that ammo at 100. About a inch or so with factory hornady ammo. Very pleased for a rifle built to be a plinker. I haven't had a chance to stretch its legs yet, but will try to remember to let you know if I do. Check out the 65grendel forum.  Ton of good info there. feel free to PM me with any questions, I will help answer any questions I can.

What length gas system does your barrel have?

It's a mid-length. I bought mine direct from Alexander Arms for $195.  I trust them since Bill Alexander helped design the round. It's double fluted and very light.  While it's a plinker for me with steel ammo, because of its light weight I will probably hunt with it some this fall.
