  1. Buy or scrounge enough ammo for a gun you don't have . . . then tell your spouse you must purchase a gun of that caliber out of sheer economy! Discuss this over a meal together in a nice restaurant, and be prepared to go shopping for a pair of women's shoes afterwards!
  2. Along those lines, I found out 20 minutes ago that 'lunch is ready' doesn't mean lunch is ready. It means stop talking to the neighbor and get your a** in the house! (Dear)
  3. IMHO: After Brian Haas of the Tennessean writes a well researched article regarding the pros and cons of Tennessee police destroying firearms versus selling or trading them for revenue, Gail Kerr of the Tennessean swoops in and writes a child-like and emotional editorial, suggesting in part that firearms are intrinsically evil. Read it and weep: Gail Kerr: Cops, not legislature, should control confiscated guns | The Tennessean | tennessean.com Recommend TGO folks post their heartfelt comments here AND after the Tennessean article.
  4. So Brian Haas, What gun story are you going to write next?
  5. If someone is breaking into my car by swinging a crowbar over his shoulder, I could certainly imagine him using that crowbar on me, it being a deadly weapon and all. Or a screwdriver, or a big rock. If I shout at the car-breaker, and he drops the crowbar or whatever weapon, and runs off, well then, off he goes. I will not shoot him in the back as he runs. However, if he turns toward me, crowbar in hand, and lunges at me, well then, in fear of my life, I will shoot him. Repeatedly, until he drops the crowbar or whatever, or collapses, or otherwise terminates the threat to me. (Or so I think. Under the circumstances I might wet myself, or hyperventilate, or shout at him in an extremely aggressive manner, or shoot him, or all of the above. You never really know for sure until the moment comes.)
  6. If californication can't get it's act together, all the good people will move out, leaving behind all the doped up crazies that can all just kill each other with sticks and broken bottles.
  7. It's a darn good thing stuff like this is being discussed, AND being backed up with chapter and verse. It's like table-top training.
  8. I hate any of the commercials that feature a ringing cell phone, especially those that sound like mine.
  9. I've been a Tennessean since I married a Nashvillian 34 years ago, but spent the last five years in San Antonio on military assignments in Governor Rick Perry's Texas. It's almost as good a state as Tennessee . As a Governor, I think he did a pretty good job, it's a pretty diverse state and I think he worked pretty hard, with everybody about equally satisfied/dissatisfied. Like any state, it's got a number of vested interests so I imagine it's like dealing with squabbling children sometimes. Texas had to cut a lot from the state budget this time around to get it BALANCED, and he kind of pissed off some of the teachers because education had to take a hit along with everybody else. Oh, well! He's had to make hard calls, doesn't shy from them, and everyone settles down to a dull grumble afterwards. You can't be everybody's friend when you are Governor, I guess. He's been working the border issues as hard as ANYONE, especially in a state that's almost 50 percent Hispanic. The legal Hispanics really don't like the illegal Hispanics any more than anybody else; a lot of Hispanics worked hard for their citizenship and had to wait for it, or were in Texas for 10 generations and watched the border flip back and forth, Mexico, Texas, then the United States. Governor Perry's wife is Hispanic and a nurse, and I think is a really strong influence on the man. He's trustworthy like a sheep dog. Some folks think he's not Ivy League brilliant enough for them, and I don't think that's so. I'd rather have an honest man in charge than some sly trickster that thinks he's smarter than everybody else, like Obama and half the U.S. Senate. He gets points from me for being a former Air Force Captain in C-130's. Texas really had it's act together with accepting and caring for post-Katrina refugees, and is well-prepared for hurricanes with Texas Task Force One, a huge mobilization on the State level that is as solid as any military operation. The Governor's stand on the Tenth Amendment and State Sovereignty is well known. If I were a Washington inside-the-beltway Federal Bloodsucker, I would hate and fear a President Perry because I think he could take them apart. He's stood up in person and in policy to the slimy Obama and has CALLED HIM OUT on any number of occasions. I met the man in person in McBride's Gun Shop in Austin Texas and had a ten minute conversation with him about the future. I was pretty impressed. I doubt the man's perfect, none of us are, but I think he's up to the job. I think the Texas Swagger and Braggadocio would transfer well from a love of Texas which he shows to the larger love of the United States that's deep down inside. He's not John Wayne riding into town on a white horse to save the day, but he's got a good track record, kept the jobs coming to Texas, and kept the squabbling down to a dull roar. We could do a lot worse, and in fact we are.
  10. Sorry for your loss. With it being your mother in law and all, how's your wife taking it? Some take it pretty rough.
  11. Another link to the story with a little more information: Actions that make heroes | MailTribune.com
  12. This is an absolutely AWESOME story. It's cool that Capt. McGinty recited his weapon's serial number by memory. Everybody conducted themselves with honor and class, ESPECIALLY the Medal of Honor recipient, Captain John J. McGinty. Semper Fi, gentlemen!
  13. Springfield Armory EMP 9mm handgun -- constant companion Springfield Armory M1A Socom 16 rifle -- gun goes BAAANNNG!
  14. Young women drive young men crazy; actually crazy. We might think its visual, but it's probably pheremones or something. Had the 'crazy' conversation with my son when he was about 23, it was an epiphany, he pretty much said '. . . yeeeessssss!! . . . ' like I explained how the universe worked or something. I only recognized it myself because I'm over 50 now and the effect is beginning to wear off. However, I think it's possible that daughters drive fathers crazy, in a different and slightly schizophrenic sort of way, wanting very very much to protect them, but remembering how much young women drove them crazy when THEY were young. The old 'I'm just defending you from a younger ME' idea. I only understand this vaguely because I do not have a daughter myself. I felt it by reflection toward my young Airmen; at work I was in the work-'father' and then, work-'grandfather' role and was protective of them, in the boy-girl dance, and more so in a war zone. Something along these lines may be driving some of the reactions here. Some folks are very vehement and touchy in their postings, both the old men perhaps with daughters and the young guys with wives and minor children and the younger guys still out prowling. Some are quick to call 'hypocrite' -- some while hypocritical themselves. Anybody understand it better than me is certainly welcome to take a better shot at explaining it. If you get all cranky and insane on me I'll probably just ignore you.
  15. I like the game camera idea. Does the entire neighborhood a favor and gives the police something to go on. Publish the name, address and telephone number of the perp. I like the mailbox full of concrete idea. Fun to think about, not so much fun to do.
  16. Zippy is a total embarrassment and so is his staff. Someone in protocol didn't get him the word, or he's such an arrogant SOB that he didn't listen -- or care. November 2012 can't get here soon enough, so we can toss out the garbage.
  17. Charged isn't convicted. Sixteen year old daughter is below the age of consent. Depending on jurisdiction, the men might be chargeable with statutory rape. There's going to be a good bit of he said, he said, he said, she said if it ever gets to trial. In the meantime, I'm thinking the daughter realizes her father disapproves of her conduct. In another time, under other circumstances, two home-invader/rapists would be dead on the floor, or wishing they were.
  18. The perp never fired his .25 mouse gun, according to the report. I wonder if it was because he was so surprised his victim resisted, or because he couldn't get the safety off, or . . . ?
  19. This is serious enough for Britain to trigger a backlash. Home defense shotguns would be a first. I wonder if the NRA is advising the brits on how to get back their lost rights? Found this from a British newspaper, may it be the first of many such articles: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/nilegardiner/100100323/if-british-shopkeepers-had-the-right-to-bear-arms-vicious-thugs-would-think-twice-before-looting/
  20. This is one crazy trio. The possibility of them in the Nashville area is real. This is not the time for amateur junior-cop heroics. However, they better not threaten me or mine or they'll have extra body cavities.
  21. Under some circumstances, management will put up such a sign to shut up the sheep without any impact on HCP-holding sheep-dogs. The wolves of course pay no attention.
  22. Regarding: "Yeah, but what if the (bad parent) guy gets home and thinks about the humiliation he endured for being asked to leave? HE may bring suit against Kroger. He is so embarrassed he can't show his face in public, he can't work now, his children are scarred for life, yada…yada…yada… " You are absolutely right! However, Kroger has a high powered legal team that can nip that in the bud. I imagine that they have legal techniques, born of constant re-use, that would make the guy wish he had never been born.
  23. I agree, we sometimes revert too quickly to lawsuits. And yet, we are a nation of laws, and they do tend to effectively restrain us. The threat of a suit, the potential for a suit, is almost as sobering as the suit itself, and much less costly. The POSSIBILITY of legal liability for a customer's injury (in addition to doing the right thing) surely was part of the store manager's motivation in this situation.
  24. Just came in from Texas. We could do much worse than Governor Perry. I met him in person, in McBrides Gun Store, Austin Texas. Had a five minute conversation. Former Air Force C-130 pilot. Witnessed first hand his very organized Texas Task Force One hurricane response staged out of Port San Antonio. Very sensible man, good leader, very pro-business. Very anti the big-footing Washington feds. Everyone knows the coyote story, I imagine. "Left him for mulch."
