From what I understand, a shotgun slug is a .729 caliber 400+ grain beast. It's far more accurate and far more effective at long ranges. I would think it would be the ultimate round choice for HD yet everyone is crazy about 00 Buck. What am I missing? Fill me in. If you're in your house, it's not like the pellets are going to spread that much unless you live in a really big house. You STILL have to aim so I don't want to hear that argument. Anyway, can anyone here attest to the lethality of shotgun slugs? (Whether it be hunting or other experimenting) Thanks!

What foggy range is that? lol

As far as I know, I've never heard of Walmart carrying Federal 5.56 62gr 440rnd in green ammo cans. Brought it home tonight for $163ish out the door. Has Walmart always carried this stuff? Seems like a pretty good deal to me. It's 2011 Lake City brass with 62gr green tip penetrators on stripper clips. I also noticed that there were about 2 times the variety of long rifles in the cases than there were about 2 weeks ago. And according to the sales person, staff officially got word today that in early (Jan) 2012, Walmart will be carrying handguns, too! Perhaps I'm behind the curve and everyone already knows this but this is news to me!

1gewehr, you hit the nail on the head. That's exactly what I was wondering. Thanks! Thanks for the replies everyone. Good points made. I also keep ALL of my mags loaded ever since I found out that the springs don't wear out from storage, lol.

I've been looking around at bulk ammunition. I'm planning on buying some for SHTF/TEOTWAWKI purposes (which obviously will never happen). Regardless, I like to keep a large store of ammunition in case of ammunition shortages or price hikes. I'll probably end up having fun shooting at the range anyway and end up replacing it. Does anyone have any experience at gun ranges where steel penetrator ammo is not allowed? I know its not AP, but it does poke deeper holes supposedly, right? But basically it has come down to the regular PMC 55gr .223 ammo vs PMC X-Tac 62gr Green Tip Penetrator 5.56 in the quantity of 1,000 for the SAME PRICE. That being said, I have a Colt AR-15 with a 1/7 16" chrome lined barrel. From what I understand, 1/7 twist barrels handle 62gr better with 55gr being too light to "stabilize." This only adds to a growing list of factors to make my decision more difficult. 55gr Pros: Lighter .223 55gr load, compatible with more guns (SHTF/TEOTWAWKI) Less throat/barrel wear? For plinking purposes, less damage to steel targets Without a doubt, not restricted at any rifle ranges 62gr Pros: Supposedly more powerful 5.56 (higher velocity? Better or worse ballistics?) 62gr optimized for 1/7 twist Steel penetrator for thick velociraptor skin Sexy green colored tips I'd really like the X-Tac ammo but the logical part of my brain tells me I should get the regular PMC stuff. $300 is a lot of money for me. Thanks for helping with the decision making process.

How to pick up brass at an outdoor range?

You thievin rat! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Remind me to bring my corroded gear and fill my guns with mud before I go downrange. -
Yikes, i see what you mean. Do you recal how many inches long it is? I was hoping it would fit around but I might have to consider squeezing it between the posts. Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk

Sadly, my Mossberg 590 only came with a gold front bead and a rear picatinny rail mounted on the receiver. I wish it had those fancy Mossberg ghost ring sights but alas it does not. I've considered mounting a cheapie red dot on the rails but I really don't like the idea. I don't want something that will get knocked off/broken/kill batteries. Therefore I've been looking at other iron sights. The gold bead is nice but I want something more visible with a similar low profile preferably compatible with low profile rear iron sights (still figuring that part out). So far, for a front post I've limited it to the following: Meprolight Night Bead Sight - $25 HiViz Spark II Fiber Optic Sight - $10 Truglo Clamp-on Fiber Optic Sight - $16 (apparently works/clamps on well according to reviews) Does anyone have any insight to any of these? I am SERIOUSLY open to any recommendations. I prefer low profile front and rear sights and cheap. For the record, I'm running a Mossberg 590 w/20" barrel and heatshield. Receiver is drilled and tapped with removable picatinny rail. Sights are for HD and to have fun with slugs, lol.

This is not the typical "can I leave my pmags loaded if I leave the cap on?" question. Does anyone have any experience with leaving loaded mags loaded in an AR-15 over a long period of time? Does loading it into the gun relieve pressure off of the magazine feed lips? Simply by the feel of it (inserting a magazine) there is definitely felt pressure locking the magazine into the gun. The reason is for HD, I leave a magazine in the gun with an empty chamber, bolt forward. I'm using P-Mags but the concept should be quite universal to all AR-15 magazines. By the way, anyone else do the same? lol Also, would it be advisable to leave a shotgun magazine tube loaded over a long period of time? Or does it need to be downloaded when not in use? Thanks!

I didn't like it, lol.

I'm actually not worried about quickly accessing the safety as I am worried about accessing the slide release. But yes, the whole reason I got a Mossberg was for that safety, the slide release positioning, open ramp, and alum. receiver. That being said, I really don't think I want a pistol grip on my gun. I suppose a AR-15 stock without a pistol grip would look retarded and probably isn't even made, lol. Right now I'm looking at reduced L.O.P. stocks made by Hogue and Speed Feed. For the price, I might be going with the hogue set from Amazon. (It's $0.99 more to include the forearm so why not lol). It's a reduced length stock with a 12" L.O.P. which sounds quite comfy. This way, I still have efficient access to all the features that made me choose a Mossberg. Some of you mentioned using spacers to get it to the right length but I've read in some places that installing a Limb saver adds about an inch and adds even more if you slip it right over the existing butt-plate and stock. Not to mention, my shoulder will be a lot happier shootin slugs, lol. Thanks for the replies, folks. Anyone want to buy an old Speed Feed I Stock? lol

Hey folks, This is kind of hard to admit but I am not the tallest or biggest person out there. I'm only about 5'8" and as of late 200 lbs, lol! That being said, my arms are probably shorter than average also. Anyway, I've had a Mossberg 590 for about 3 months now and I've always struggled shouldering it. It's a 12 guage with a magazine Speed Feed stock with a Surefire forearm light. The problem that I have with it is reaching the weapon forearm. Rather, I can reach it, but it takes a great deal of stretching. I'm pretty sure that it has nothing to do with my stance as I was trained with a shotgun (Rem 870). This is pretty much the same stance that I use except my support arm is straight because I can barely reach the forearm when the shotgun is in battery. Anyway, my question is... Do you think installing an alternative stock with a reduced length of pull (LOP) would be a reasonable/valid solution? Or a collapsible stock? It would sadden me to get rid of my Speed Feed stock. Or do I need to replace my forearm with an extended one? This would make me extremely sad because I like my surefire forearm light. Or would I be better off just selling the shotgun off because they're not friendly to small people? Am I doomed? Or should I just suck it up and leave it as it is. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Good luck. Ive emailed them twice and have not received any kind of responses about two months ago.

Pretty much any good gun shop should carry them. However, Surefire is a little too expensive for my taste. I order my batteries from Battery Junction online. You can buy Titanium Innovations batteries for less than a dollar a piece vs $2-3 Surefire batteries. I use these for recreational purposes.

Magazine Pouch Systems ( Biased Review)
MiddTennTaco replied to MiddTennTaco's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
It's really not that heavy at all. My police duty belt weighed about the same and all I ever used were belt keepers with an inner belt. Mike, that's a good point. I am by no means a professional, however I was taught to shoot and move. The threat may not know where you moved to. If you are concealed in a new position it is very possible to give yourself away if you're topping off your gun. Given time and opportunity, moving fresh magazines forward will especially be loud with velcro. It is also a lot like the M1 Garand clip ejection system that got soldiers killed during World War II. It was so loud and distinct that Germans caught onto the fact that a reload was taking place. Similarly, if I hear you playing with velcro straps, I'm going to take advantage of it. Anyway, the difference may be minimal to you but what does it hurt when elastic bands are just as easy and efficient to use as velcro or buttons? -
First of all.. Why are you removing the magazine tube from the receiver? I think that's highly unnecessary. If anything you'll break or bend it trying to take it off. Can you see anything wrong with it? Just take out the follower, spring, and cap to see if theres anything wrong with them. Also, you don't need a beefier follower. You can easily replace it with a better one and not lose any capacity at all. And are you sure that it is the EXACT same ammunition you used before? I think that this is the real culprit.

Magazine Pouch Systems ( Biased Review)
MiddTennTaco posted a topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Nothing looks stupider than fumbling for mags in your pockets. Let's just say I've been looking hard and long for a magazine carry system for my AR-15 weapon system. Believe me, there are a LOT out there. However, I finally found a simple system that met my criteria. Intended usage - Run n Gun. After doing some thinking, I found that three loaded AR-15 magazines to be my happy medium being extremely lightweight and mobile. Besides, if you can't solve a problem with 120 primary rounds you should probably go back to the basics. Besides being lightweight I also wanted a pouch solution that had nothing to do with button snaps or velcro. Too many things to fail, snap, rip, or tear and most importantly, too damn noisy. At this point I was already looking at Kydex solutions. The biggest problem I found with these was that they ran around $30-$40 per magazine pouch. For three magazines, we're already talking about a $90-$120 magazine system. Secondly, these magazines are held in with tension screws and indexed only half of the magazine. I was looking for something that I could trust to HOLD onto my magazines if I had to take off into a full on sprint. Thirdly, THREE separate units are harder to manage than one. Kydex was ruled out. Finally, on the verge of giving up I found my solution at a local gun show. Condor Tactical Gear molle triple open top magazine pouch system. I found that this thing has everything I could ever want. Elastic Bands - Instead of button snaps or velcro, Condor has three adjustable elastic bands that have large tabs to grab onto. It's very easy to use. You simply use the slope of the magazine to slide the elastic band off the top of the magazine and then you can pull it up. You also have the option of removing the elastic bands altogether from the system to run it as a true open top system. You'd be surprised to find that the magazines stay perfectly seated even then as a good 5/6 of the magazine is seated "inside" of the pouch. You pretty much have to stand on your head for the magazines to fall out. Magazine Compatibility - Any 30 rnd capacity AR-15 magazines will fit in these pouches (20 rounders will disappear into the pouch, lol). It's not loose but it's not tight either. I've been using P-mags and they all fit perfectly in EVERY orientation (facing in/out, right side up/upside down, and any combination thereof) REGARDLESS of whether or not you have the dust covers on. I've even found that if you have the P-Mag facing rearward in the upside down position WITH dust cover on, that when the magazine is drawn, the dust cover latch will snag on the elastic band and detach from the magazine all on its own harmlessly falling back into the pouch (most of the time). And YES, even with the dust cover sitting at the bottom of the pouch, a magazine will still slide right back in AND easily secure with the elastic band. I might also mention utilizing this method/orientation promotes a nice and proper beer can magazine index for reloading. Extra Secondary Pouches - The Condor magazine pouch system ALSO has three pistol/handgun pouches that are adjacent to the primary mags. They utilize VERY tight elastic sides that hold pistol magazines in by pressure AND have velcro covers. This brings me to my only CON of this system. WHY velcro? You would think that they would use the same system as the primary pouches. I suppose it's not so bad though. On the plus side, the velcro covers ARE removable but I'm too afraid of losing my glock mags. Conclusion - The price couldn't be beat for me. I picked it up for $30 at a local gun show and as you can see I mounted it on a belt that I picked up at the same time. I forget the brand of the belt but it's awesome as-well. It has two great pistol pouches which secure by clip. Overall very pleased with the build quality of the magazine pouch system. I'm good to go with 212 rounds. It's quite versatile I've found. I've been able to put all sorts of things in the primary weapons pouch. So far I've found that my Glock 19 and my large Fenix TK35 flashlight are secured quite well by the elastic band and I imagine a number of other things could be secured there should the need arise. Thus concludes my biased review. -
My 590 holds eight. I don't know what could possibly be wrong with yours. The magazine tube assembly is extremely simple.

I ran about 100 rounds of Walmart Tula .223 combined with a couple hundred PMC .223 through my Colt AR-15 with no problems at all. My gun was just as dirty as it usually is. However, I figured the amount of money saved buying steel case VS buying cheap PMC or AE was negligible. At least with the brass stuff you can reload/sell. Also, just the fact that the steel is harder than regular brass... running it through my gun kind of worries me.

That isn't what I meant. I know there are a lot of ranges out there but simply googling for ranges only shows half of them.

Yeah, I don't know why ranges are so hard to find around here (Murfreesboro).
