1.
In our community, some folks may differ from others in experience and opinion. Even with differences, I am pretty sure that we all wish the best for each other's families and loved ones... so while we "talk", let's remember that. Alright,... is there anything we can learn here? http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2014/apr/17/christ-and-self-defense-police-officer-lays-out-bi/ It does seem that the author of the article is either clueless or wanted to make this guy seem like a Class-A nut job. *edit: or maybe the guy is just what is represented... maybe I'm the nut job. :pleased: One of my first thoughts is... if this guy was a helicopter pilot for only 3 years in the army.... Uncle Sam didn't make his money back on this one. Don't we like to keep officers in longer than that? -peace
I assume he served more than three years total, and most rotary wing pilots are Warrant Officers. He's probably a high school to flight school guy. Not sure what you mean about the article portraying him as a nut job. Lots of devout Christians are in our military, and know when they sign the papers they may have to kill enemy. If you're flying a helicopter with armaments on it nowadays, not only is it a possibility, it is a certainty. I know many pilots who flew armed aircraft in Iraq and Afghanistan, and their faith is not shaken by what they did during the course of the mission and have no issue reconciling their actions, as far as I can tell. What should one do when they are the only means of securing the safety of their brethren is to kill those who aim to kill them? The folks I talk about have killed a lot of people. But these folks sit amongst TGO members here each Sunday in church. They're not any different than you or I. They've just been in an extraordinary circumstance which requires extraordinary resolve and character to come out the other side and not be looney with guilt. Folks who must kill to defend themselves and loved ones may not be as well suited to deal with it as these men, but I don't think that says something negative about either party, ya know? I've had a few growlers filled, but haven't ordered a drink in ages. I've never understood why people pay $10 (or more!) for a couple beers in a noisy bar when you can get a whole 6-pack for that.
...or make your own for even less... I get it in mason jars from a coworker... :ugh: I'm no expert, but to my knowledge there's a beer license and a liquor license. If you've got a liquor license, you can sell anything up to PGA. http://www.tn.gov/abc/llicensing%20-%20liquor%20by%20the%20drink.shtml
You've never bellied up to a bar at a chain theme restaurant and ordered a drink that less than 0.0001% of the population drink? 5.
Yeah, I dont know how large the gray area is in the law. I imagine there are circumstances in which the law would not apply. But, I have seen the law applied at court cases before. (In mainstream media of course)Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
Well in TN there is now such law. Reasonable fear means just that. If I'm in reasonable fear for my life, laws are moot anyway, aren't they? If I'm staring death in the face I'm not too worried about a court case, am I? I'm gonna defend myself with any means necessary. If the law says that I'm required to die in place rather than pull a firearm, I guess I'll spend the rest of my life in prison, but at least I'll be alive. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
 6.
I know what you are talking about SKS's if I remember correctly don't have firing pin springs and do put marks on primer caps can they slam fire "yes". I have personally had it happen to me with a Mossberg pump action I think it was a 500 model but don't quote me it was back in the early 80's on a pheasant hunt, luckily no one was hurt. I found out that it was because it doesn't have a firing pin return spring. Don't no if they changed the design because I never owned another.
No, a firearm will not slam fire simply because is has a floating firing pin. If that were the case, we would have a whole lotta issues from the tens of millions of AR series and M-16 series rifles in circulation, or perhaps the near half-billion AK pattern rifles around the world. I've seen slam fires before. It was unrelated to the firing pin. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
 7.
I don't know about TN but NC had laws on the books that described the force allowable by law. This "escalation of force" pretty much stated if you are being attacked it is lawful to use similiar means to defend yourself. So if the perp has a gun you could use a gun to defend yourself. Are there laws like this in TN?Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
So if a 7ft tall body builder attacks a 5ft tall, 100lb woman with his fists, she can only use her fists to defend herself? That sucks. Guess weak people in NC are screwed and can be killed at will by stronger people?

 10.   My boy is just a little younger than yours and he loves riding in Daddy's truck.  I got quite a deal on mine, but I'm a hard person to haggle with.  I was just brought in on a haggling tactic where you get a cashier's check from your bank for the cost of the vehicle you're looking for, then walk right in with the check.  They'd have to pass up the cash waving in front of their face not to give you the deal.  I bought a quad cab Dodge Ram for just over 20k.  I can't imagine life without it.
 11.
I'll admit to a bit of jealousy. I make a decent living but I sure don't have $40k to spend on a truck. I also don't have an additional $10k-20k to spend on farkles for said truck.
I've got a big ol truck. I didnt pay near 40k for it. I didn't put a bunch of bells and whistles on it either. It is for hauling. Would never risk damaging it by taking it off road. And to further emasculate myself regarding the reasons for purchasing a quad cab versus a regular cab pickup, I did it so I could fit car seats for the kids back there. My truck hauls and is still a family vehicle. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
 12. It's really effing small. I've had the unpleasant experience of shooting Palma sights on a Remmy 700 on silhouette targets at 1000 meters. Even that was with a spotter. It is not easy. Beside the issue with it straining the limits of its accuracy, wind is not a constant value from barrel to target. A mid-range the wind may be going a completely different direction than what it is at target or 200m from your barrel. Couple that with a round that doesn't have a flat trajectory compared to all those sooper dooper sexy long range guns. And no, 7.62 x 54r does not have a flat trajectory. It just doesn't. 14.
Also, DONT USE KNIVES (esp folders) FOR PRYING! As many small pry bars that are available on the market today for next to nothing, there is no excuse for this. Its like using a pistol for a hammer and then complaining that it has dents, dings, or cracks in it.
Haha, and just a few hours ago I was using my Gerber folder for a pry bar. Meh, they're $25 and I buy one about once a year. I promise not to do it with the pro tech. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

 18.
It's virtually a 30-06, which is a bit flatter shooting than the standard .308. Cut down the barrel re-crown it and get the trigger decent and a Mosin will shoot with a Remington 700 that has had the same work. They are pretty similar so I'm not sure why the comparison seems so exaggerated in your mind? I say the same thing about most guys that brag about their "sniper" rifle setups. Most of them couldn't do it with a 700 any better than a Mosin. In short, it's not the gun. ;)
Well, actually, it is the gun. A great shooter cannot outshot a rifle's capability. I can't hand Carlos Hathcock my 30-30 and expect him to take out Viet Cong at 1000m. He couldn't do it. I agree, having a sooper dooper sniper rifle doesn't mean you can hit squat. I imagine I could outshoot many folks with a mosin if they were shooting an AI super gun. Doesn't mean that the mosin is on par with that super gun though. You can believe that a mosin shoots just as well as a MOA Remington 700. You'd be wrong though. I would get into the ammo thing, but I don't suppose you'd believe me either if I told you that 118LR is much different than some soviet surplus spam can special. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
 19.
No, Mosin's are not 3 MOA guns. I'm sure out of the 37 million +/- made since the 1891 some are, but many are on par with any other standard sniper rifle used today. Ask any of the Germans that lost the sniper battle with the Russians what they think of the accuracy of Mosin's. Maybe Eric will chime in with his long range sub-moa with surplus loads Mosin. ;)
Yeah, not buying that. I own a couple mosins. They are great guns. They are not on par with the sniper rifles used today, unless you're referring to soviet era sniper weapons systems. Not to mention that 7.62 x 54r doesn't exactly have a flat trajectory. I've been behind a couple guns to know better. You get a good shooter behind a mosin and give him enough rounds, he will bang steel at 1000m eventually. I'll believe when I see someone do it more than once in 5 rounds or less. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
 20.
Notice all the empties on the ground? He has shot more than twice at that target before videoing it.
Yup. What's a mosin anyway? 3 MOA gun? Even in a vacuum and the sturdiest bench vise that rifle isn't capable of consistently making that shot. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

 24.
What would change is that we would have even more ignorant people legally carrying guns and when they screw it would be their problem, but it will also cause us problems. I agree the training is not perfect, but I also have heard several people make comments after class like "eye opening experience," "had no idea," "didn't realize," etc. Stupid people will do stupid things, but a little education may occasionally do a completely ignorant yet reasonably intelligent person some good.
We could apply that to gun ownership in general. Why not? Stupid gun owners are making us look bad all the time. Why not make people take a class and apply for a license to own a gun? Same logic applies. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
 25.
Just to clarify, I said I am amazed at how little you all spend? I spend more and I don't have kids. Are you saying that you spend less because you have kids?
Ha, sorry, I misread your post. When I was single I usually got by on less than $3 a day in food. I had a rotating diet of hot dogs, Totinos pizzas and Dinty Moore over rice. One can of stew and a cup of rice kept me fed all day. Now, I ate like a bum because I needed the money for beer and rubbers. That bill was considerably higher than my groceries. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
