I'd rather be alive after the smoke clears.

No doubt that most people get smarter as they get older and more experienced. To me, the defining point here is that we have decided as a society to make 18 the magic age when one suddenly is fully legally responsible for what they do. We make certain privileges available to younger people, like driving. But if you are a thief, the penalties are different at age 17 than they are at age 18. Much of this topic has become like the imagined evils of allowing ordinary people to carry a handgun. "If we allow 18 year olds to carry a handgun, the streets will run red with blood!" I doubt that. Three years probably wouldn't make much difference. Analog, I think it's interesting that your 19 year old drinks underage. I did that too at age 19 and even at 17. Funny how bad laws are ignored and worked around.

Knoxville is about a hundred miles from the Tri-Cities, so the locater is correct.

I suspect there may be a fairly good retainer business in this field. Just a "serving suggestion" for anyone reading this.

Well, congratulations!!!!!

Where do you carry? (on your body)
Marswolf replied to KahrMan's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Just guessing but I'll bet not to many of you carry on your web belt. -
Benny, it's going great! Just jump in and cause some trouble!

Well, I'm disappointed. I thought the Meth Lab was actually IN Wal-Mart. Attention Wal-Mart Shoppers, in the Pharmacy aisles....

I have my draft card up on the front of my shadow box. It's the middle card in the front. I need a bigger shadow box. Issued six days after my 18th birthday. You are either an adult or not. At 18, you are legally an adult. You can kill and be killed for your country. You can be prosecuted for sleeping with you 17 year old girlfriend. But you can't buy beer and you can't carry a handgun. This strikes me an extremely unjust. If you want to argue that the age when you become an adult should be 21, or 25 , or 40, then fine. But don't tell me that you are an adult for some things at 18 but other things at 21. That's just stupid.

Well, the store locater says there are no stores within 75 miles. But we do have a new Best Buys in Bristol.

Well, this topic went downhill in a hurry. USP 40 is an open side carry gun worn at 3:00 or in a shoulder holster.. P7M8 is IWB at 4:00. Kel-Tec is almost always in the right rear pocket, although I have worn it IWB at 4:00. Beretta 92 is on my web belt either in a thigh holster below my combat knife, same place higher on the web belt with the knife shifted to the left side, or in a shoulder holster. Personal opinion - SOB sucks. Oh yeah...Thunderwear. I seldom use it. Something about facing an assailant with my hand down my pants doesn't really appeal to me. For some reason, women tend to spot it more than men too. I guess that is good. -
Waverly is a bit quieter than Atlanta. I drove down the streets in Atlanta, in Oakland City, where my grandmother and great grandparents lived several years ago. What was once a nice neighborhood now has burglar bars on every house. Those folks need to take their city back from the trash who now prey on the populace. First step is to eliminate welfare within the city limits. Yes, I know that is a pipe dream. Next best choice is indeed to just move away and let a once great city fester.

Unlike in the movies, the bullets don't swerve around at random. I applaud the guy for taking the shots. You have to go with the possibilities you have. He clearly had a good angle on the first shots and also obviously was aware of the position of the customer and kid for the second round of shots. You are never likely to have a perfectly clear shot.
-
He's only a thousand miles away. Maybe we could pay him a visit.

I wasn't trying to insult you Jamie and you are quite correct about racking the slide with the 1911 in safe condition. But I think you understand my point. I refused to wear a 1911 in Vietnam.
-
Mark, I'll be glad to serve, if I'm around. I have recently met someone who might serve if something should come up. Should we commit to going to Mark's place?
-
Jamie, just trust me. It's an entirely different situation when someone is shooting at you. It will be much easier to train yourself in safety procedures when holstering than when attempting to return fire. I think one of the reasons for acceptance of Glocks for LE, apart from the lack of the scary hammer and excellent LE pricing, is the lack of a real safety. A lot more than one LEO using a 1911 forgot to unlock the weapon when confronted in a gunfight. A common scenario, from what I am told found the poor guy dropping the mag, slipping in a second, racking the slide and still not figuring out that the problem was that the safety was on. Odd stuff happens to you when someone is shooting at you. That's why I don't trust myself after 38 years of being shot at to remember to remove a safety when the SHTF.

I figured you would. But you are buying one anyway.... By any chance do you carry a Glock? Mark, I carry a Cold Steel on my web belt. Excellent throat slasher / stabber. Excellent double edged attack knife. I wouldn't recommend it for wood splitting. I'd go for a froe made from a truck leaf spring for that, or a wedge, or a splitting maul. My daily carry is a Gerber Applegate - Fairbairn Covert Folder in 154CM. Recommended by a LE friend in North Carolina. I have been very happy with it. Oh sorry, wrong photo.... The one knife that is always in my pocket when I go out is a Victorinox Classic SD in black. Good not only for everyday use, but also for combat settings. That little screwdriver will fit anything! I've sent a bunch of them to guys heading to Iraq and Afghan. After a while, they figure out why they are carrying it. Should be standard issue. Here it is in a nice transparent pink.

It occurs to me that this could be a good thing. As you know, I don't think a handgun should be carried in a condition where it can not just be drawn and fired. Funny things happen to training in an adrenalin rush. More than one experienced packer or LEO has forgotten to flip off the safety when bullets started flying their way. But the XD is basically a Glock with some additional safety features. That, in final analysis, is why I sold the XD-9 sub. But it does occur to me that it would be possible to train yourself to flip on the manual safety while holstering the weapon and immediately flip that safety off as soon as it is in the holster. Sounds like a good idea if you just have to carry a striker-fired handgun.

It looks to me like Scrap Yard Knives is basically competition for Cold Steel Knives. Prices and construction are similar. Looks like their claim to fame is the use of S-7 shock resistant tool steel. I think the questions is, if it is so good how come virtually no one else in the knife business uses it for blades? They also make knives in related steels like SR-77. Here is a page listing knife steels - good and bad. http://users.ameritech.net/knives/steels.htm S-7 and SR-77 aren't even listed. There are a lot of qualities to knife blade steel. Shock resistance is one of those qualities. But ability to hold an edge, corrosion resistance and a bunch of other qualities come into play. Heat treating and quenching are other factors. Personally, I'd be reluctant to buy a knife in a steel that other knife makers aren't using. BTW, here is an old steel knife I keep in the block with my Wüsthof kitchen knives. It has proved to be an excellent preparation knife. The steel is saw blade steel. I use it for nostalgia and because it makes a good boning knife, although I have a professional meat cutter's boning knife given to me from a meat processing plant. The old knife steel actually has a lot of physical properties of S-7. It's good, but it isn't nearly the quality of the Wüsthof blades. S-7 might be a good choice for a wood splitter, but it would have to be properly heat treated and quenched or you will spend a lot of time sharpening it. Have you ever seen the DVD that Cold Steel gives away that shows how tough their knives are? If you order a free catalog from them http://order.store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/wg-request-catalog?csstoreonline you also get SOLID PROOF AND GRAPHIC SWORD PROOF DVD's

Good grief Rando. You had a woman try to kill her husband in a church in your area this past week. That sounds like a pretty good reason that church carry would be right to me.

Lots of experience both practical and in service. What are you really looking for Price Real world experience Theoretical. Good knives are worth the price. But none of them are cheap.

I think that is neat. We are still at melty snowy whatever. 28 degrees and nothing on the grounds. Sun is almost out. I guess it's neat that we have a state with such differerces,

Marswolf replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Beat me to it jaypee. I don't know Bob, but have heard some great things about him. Do you have a good phone number for him. I found three, (423) 956-1230, (423) 239-3843 and (423) 378-8302 and an email at camponov@tricon.net.
