I think the spirit of what Mike Rowe was saying is that all things being equal will you pay more just to avoid imported goods, right?

You won't get a skilled US worker with a strong work ethic to build something that's only 10% that it costs to be made in China and shipped halfway around the world, right?

This is assuming businesses would hire "skilled US workers". Sadly, made in USA doesn't necessarily mean it's made by Bobby and Susie craftsman from our neighborhoods. It'll be the absolute cheapest labor they can get.

The duct opening is normal, maybe a bit larger than needed, but all foundation openings are bigger than the trunk lines going through them. You should NOT be seeing daylight through there. It should fit snug against both the wall and the HVAC and should be sealed with silicone. Check that the sides go down into the dirt so there's no way for critters to get in unless they tunnel under the metal shroud. If not, pack some soil up against the bottom and put some gravel over it to help minimize erosion.

For the plumbing holes, take a piece of cardboard down there and cut a template for each side. Then transfer the pattern to a piece of plywood. A couple of screws up into the OSB above and a short 1x1 screwed into the joist to support the "inside" edge will do it. Run a bead of silicone or caulk around the edges and call it a day. Easy to remove if you or a plumber ever need access to those fittings in the future. Put some silicone around those copper pipes going through the OSB too.

Finally got to do this today. Used the expanding foam to seal up the gaps instead which was a mistake. That stuff is messy. Regardless, I very much appreciate the advice. Same goes for everyone else in the thread who pitched in. I greatly appreciate it.

Turns out it was a skunk. I guess it was so concentrated that i couldn't tell. caught his stinky a** on camera though. I noticed some scratch marks in the dirt at the front of the AC and a bunch of excess wire had been pulled out and chewed on. I think the A-hole bit that wire till it bit him back and he sprayed my unit. Then the house of cards pulled it inside for me to enjoy.

Mine too, but I can measure and saw 2x4s and screw them together. They are in the basement, so the don’t have to look pretty.

I just got in my crawlspace today and did some work. Which reminds me, I should thank the TGO'ers who gave me some ideas on how to fix it... more in another thread

It ain't the years, its the mileage. 🙄

My odometer has done rolled over at least twice and I got the scars to prove it. 😵‍💫

I'm 69 and feel every day of it. 💩

haha, that poop emoji speaks volumes!

  5. I'm about to be 45, so our ages aren't close, but this kinda thing gives me pause because we have at least one case of alzheimers in the family. If you're anything like me, if any medication has a side effect, i'm sure to experience it.

I think the key for a lot of folks in my family has been to keep moving. It's very obvious the difference between folks in their 70s who are "out and about" vs the ones who sit most of their day. While not direct family (and genetics also play a role) my father-in-law starts each morning with a few sit ups and pushups. I won't say that they're text book, but the guy is 72 and still very spry. He also walks their dog 4-5 times a day. He keeps moving

I know what you're thinking, what's that got to do with memory? but being engaged in something like a hobby, taking a walk, reading a book etc. forces you to think on your feet. Obviously you have to limit that to what you can do in your present condition, but just getting out of the house and engaging with others may help that. I fully plan to be that guy at the local Hardees drinking coffee and having a biscuit once I retire (Lord willing).

If you don't use it, you lose it.. my wife reminds me of that all the time.

We had two animals (for lack of a better term) at work who got kicked out of the Po Folks on Summer Ave.  I’ve never seen humans eat like those two.  Po Folks had an all-you-can-eat chicken special and after an hour or so, refunded my two co-workers and asked them to leave because there was a church youth group due soon and if the pace continued, there would be no chicken for them.

I had buddies who would go to Shoney's all you can eat breakfast and sit all day so they rolled into lunch. Speaking of all you can eat. I sure do miss the all you can eat ribeye
