  1. I am looking for a versatile scope for my AR 15. It came from the factory with cheap o red dot. I am NOT a fan. I'm not sure if a regular hunting style scope or a reflex scope or something like that would be a good option. I plan on doing a little hunting / plinking with it so I need something in between I suppose. From your guys experience what would be a good option. I don't really have a budget but I'm not going to spend something outrageous. Thanks in advance.
  2. I know you were kidding. Im one of them ol sheltons. Lucky for me my momma isnt a shelton and dad married a beautiful lady. I agree, i would love to find some of those artifacts. Not too sure that i would tell a lot of people. There are some things that people just dont need to know about.
  3. Going to be a cold one! The frost is already starting to settle on my truck as I look out on my late lunch break. Going to be a long day. I get off at midnight. Try to sleep. Wake-up hit the woods before daylight. Come out at noonish. Go back to work at 2pm and try to stay awake the rest of the day. But its worth it. My true weekend is on Monday and Tuesday and I'll have the whole mountain to myself.
  4. I would love to know more. If we could only turn back time, or just have a few minutes to talk to them. I remember my gg grandfather on mom's side telling me that he remembers as a young man finding stashes of old firearms and rations in caves and old forgotten mines. What a find that would be.
  5. One of those ugly ol Shelton boys that got shot was my ggg grandfather. His younger brother mt ggg uncle did fight for the confederatates. That's how I trace my ancestry to the scv.
  6. My G-G-G uncle was mustered in 1862. Company A NC 64 out of Madison Co. He was only 16 and fought for 3 years. Was in the battle at Cumberland gap. He was a private. Private William Shelton. Im also tied to the Shelton Laurel Massacre.
  7. I went to my first scv meeting tonight. A wonderful experience! Talked about the role of chaplains in the confederate service. I officially get sworn in next month. Looking forward to it!
  8. Is that the same sam watkins in the ken burns documentary?
  9. I haven't been part of the previous buys. But I would be interested in something like that. Depending on price and fundage
  10. I will check those books out. I read a lot, so that is right up my alley.
  11. I would like to see what it takes to get involved in reenactments.
  12. That is a nice looking set up you have. I believe that I am going to venture down the black powder path a pretty good ways. Now, I need more funds or a sponsor haha. Nah, ill work extra and save up.
  13. Im hooked on black powder and my wife will no longer be happy with me. Today, I went to a local gun club as a guest. They were shooting sharps rifles in 45/70 and flint locks in .45. Needless to say I became an instant fan! The flint lock was sweet. Shot it off hand at 50 yards and hit just right of the bullseye. Not bad for open sights and being the first time i shot the rifle. The older men starting ragging me to shoot the sharps at 200 yards. Open sights but resting. I hit the steel rabbit. Cling! That's a nice sound. Shot it twice more because all the older guys wanted to see me do it. Talk about a man that had a huge smile on his face and that was me. I was very thankful of those guys who let me shoot. I didn't ask. I suppose they saw me drooling as they were setting up. Nice guys for sure! I am going to join the club after the first of the year. And on a side note: my new scope on my .243 Winchester model 70 is now set in. Great day indeed!
  14. I would be just stunned to vist a place like that. Call me emotional, I was kinda misty eyed when I left chicamauga. It's sacred ground. I would imagine that any battle field would be.
  15. I didn't realize that those enfields were .58 caliber. I bet that does lay a whooping on something. No wonder that war had so many amputees. Very sad. That mini ball and rifled barrels were a heck of a combination. I saw some artillery down at chicamauga, and was in awe of the different types that were. Not to mention the gun museum they have. Wow!
  16. Thank you for the info. Im sure this will be a learning experience for me.
  17. I have recently traced my heritage back to see if any of my ancestors fought during the civil war. Lucky for me I found a few, on both sides of the family, fighting not only for both sides, but fighting each other as well. Well, long story short, one of my ancestors qualified me to become a member of the sons of confederate veterans. Which now has me interested in civil war arms. So , my question to those in the know. Where do I start to look for the type of arms used? I know 1851 navy revolveres and 1860 springfiends were used by the union and confederates. I know that enfields were used mostly by the confederates. But where to find these and what do I look for? I'm not afraid of replicas. I know that uburti makes some fine replicas, as does pietta. I have considered reenactments, so something that looks and feels the part would add to the allure of that period of history. I also know that i am going to open up a whole new can of worms, meaning that i will need powder, caps, lead for the boolits ect. I have the will, just need the direction. Thanks in advance. I hope to learn from any information y'all give.
  18. Thanks for that number. It is on my to do list tomorrow.
  19. I actually saw the promo for it in July. That was one reason I went for the bushmaster. I liked the way it felt and that was actually part of the sales pitch. So, I thought what the heck. I got a good deal on my first ar. And I went for it. Put the sucker on layaway and paid for in just over a month. I busted my butt in ot for that thing. Granted, its only $50 but heck its $50!
  20. I'm wondering the same thing. My receipt says nothing about a layaway. Just says the amount total paid, and the date purchased with a copy of my background check with the same date.
  21. Shooting the smoke pole is one of my favorite things, and my favorite style of hunting. I just really like the simplicity of the whole matter.
  22. Food for thought. I recently purchased my first ar. A bushmaster carbon 15. I like the way it feels, shoots just fine for me. Its my first, will not be my last ar. Now to the story. Bushmaster is offering a $50 rebate. Fine with me. So I sent off for it thinking hey, I can use $50 on some ammo. So get the note in the mail Saturday thinking sweet! Wrong! Denied! They say that my gun was purchased before the promotion started. So, I call them today. They say because I put it on layaway in July thay I didn't qualify. I told the csm that i purchased it on September 2, a month after the promo started. He said that remington/bushmaster didn't see it that way and went by the layaway date instead. I said seriously!? I said that is just wong. He said he saw my side of it, but could not go against policy. My first words were come on man! I call bs.... I have recipts that were circled and mailed to them when I sent in the rebate. I followed instructions to the T. Luckily, its not the end of thr world. But, I think that's just lame. Enough of the rant. Thanks for reading
  23. Up close the 4k may look a little blurry. But that isn't a game changer. However, 4k tv hasn't taken off in a big way on the consumer side....yet. if i wanted the lcd screen id get it. New versions vof gopro always evolve and the quality is good so maybe later updes will fix the heat problem. Its mostly what happens in post that makes good video
  24. Im gonna plug them with the bow if I can. Luckily, our farm is big enough so that switching areas if needed will be ok. I can dedicate time to yote hunting. I always like to exercise the ol trigger finger.
