Slushee Question for August: Manual Safety or No?
saintsfanbrian replied to dcloudy777's topic in Handguns
I have a Beretta that has a safety that is almost never used. I have a Glock without a safety, and I have a 1911 which has one somewhere though I never use it. I like the idea of having them, I just prefer not to worry about them. -
Just wait, Marswolf will be sure to tell you exactly where you can get your Glock needs. Welcome to the group and enjoy the site.
-
Congratulations, maybe one day I will have one.

Okay, I think we have a clear misconception of what a right and what a privilege is. Personally, Life is a right. Liberty is only truly defined by our constitution therefor it is a privilege. The pursuit of happiness is a right. You cannot take away my pursuit of happiness. Everything else is a privilege. Don't get me wrong. I support the bill of rights and the second as much as the first, but in all actuality, since the government can and frequently does take them away, they are not rights. With life being a right, I have the right to protect it with any means necessary from being taken from me. The best defense against someone with a gun is another gun. Voting is not a right, it is a privilege. Actually, I think it is a duty, but that is beside the point. If it was truly a right, well, 16 year olds, 12 year olds, etc would be able to do it. Driving a car is a privilege, owning a home is a privilege, having a computer is a privilege, working is a privilege. You can call them what you will, but as soon as some one has the authority to take something away from you it is no longer a right. We can talk about enumerated vs. unalienable until the cows come home. And I am sure Rabbi will pull out all kinds of documentation and paragraphs of why I am wrong and my views are flawed, but in this republic that we have, just about everything that we consider to be "rights" are actually just glorified privileges thanks to the fat cats that we put in power. By the way, does it sicken anyone else to know that these guys get paid $160,000 + for working less than 200 days a year? Don't give me the garbage of the fact that they come home and have to work in their home areas because I am sure they do some, but I bet they spend less time working than the average person who has but in 20 years at their job. I don't know any company that gives 165 days off a year I don't care how long you have been with them. We as citizens are duty bound to tell these idiots that we will not sit idly by ANYMORE!!!! It is time for a revolution of sorts where we send the incumbents packing back home. Get rid of ALL of them and start anew. I am starting to think that there should be some sort of rotating system whereby ALL citizens are put in a hat like jury duty and when your time comes you pack up and go off to DC to do what your constituents want you to do. No more elections, everybody gets a turn. Then and ONLY then will we truly have a government of the people by the people for the people. Right now we have an elected aristocracy. They sit up in Washington spouting out to the serfs what they are going to let us do. How many of them have had things happen that if you or I did we would be under the jail? How many people has Ted Kennedy killed? How many times can a man turn his head, Pretending he just doesn't see?

I think there is a lot of confusion as to what exactly is a "right" and what is a priviledge. A right is something that CANNOT be taken away. Rights CANNOT be limited. Unfortunately, too many people in this country are willing to have their rights limited by stupid laws that should never be on the books. Life - I have the right to live, unless I am an unborn fetus or a murdering SOB. (I am rethinking my stance on the death penalty lately) Liberty - the power to do as one pleases, unless that is against the law, like smoking pot (I don't, but does that mean you shouldn't be allowed to?) Pursuit of happiness - doing things that I enjoy, again, unless there is a law against it, I can't drive 100 MPH down the highway regardless of how good of a driver I am. Now, what is a right and what is a priviledge. I have the priviledge of paying taxes every year for a government that has grown way to large to keep getting bigger because people won't reign them in. I have the priviledge of being affraid for my life in some parts of this city regardless of what weapon I may have with me. I have the priviledge of paying the utility bills and food bills for people that are too lazy to get off of their duffs and go out and find a job, any job to bring money in to their households or who think it is easier to keep squirting out kids to get more money from the government. I have the priviledge of working 40+ hours a week and then seeing 1/4 of my paycheck go to things like health insurance and dental insurance because the doctors have to spend a ton of money on malpractice insurance because half the people in this country think the way to get rich is to sue some one else. Stop and think of where that money is going to come from. I could go on and on, but I think you all get the point. Rights don't come with strings attached. If they are truly rights, no government has to put out a document to "recognize" them. They are yours and there is only one being that can change them. So, again, carry open, carry concealed, carry in your car or in your front yard, I don't really care. Just carry, and in October/November elections, tell the idiots that have been sitting on their duffs getting richer and richer off of YOUR money exactly what you think of them. Send them ALL home!

No confusion, I was just hoping you could do it on line and maybe it would be a little quicker.

How do we get Glocking to stop spamming us;)
-
Ah, see, he edited it, when he first wrote it he put online. I know I saw it somewhere.
-
I know that, Tungsten http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/showpost.php?p=22882&postcount=4, he said he did it online, I was assuming (my mistake) that he did it like the Drivers License renewal that you can do online. Pay your money, fill in the information and they send you a new one. I did that this year and it worked great.
-
Reef, do you have a link to do it online? I know there is a place for Drivers License, but I haven't seen one for HCP's.

That was what I saw. If you go to http://www.state.tn.us/safety/handgun/renewals.htm, there is a form that you can download and do it by mail. How to Renew Your Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit Renewals can be submitted up to six (6) months prior to the expiration date. Any person whose handgun carry permit expires and such person applies for a renewal within six (6) months from the date of expiration, such person shall only be required to comply with the renewal provisions. However, you may not lawfully carry a weapon until you receive a new permit. *If the renewal application is filed six (6) months or more from the date of expiration, such person shall, for all purposes, be considered a new applicant. The fee is $50.00. A background check will be conducted on all renewal applicants. A new permit will be mailed from the Central Handgun Permit Office. A permit holder can submit a Renewal Application at any Driver License Center or renew by mail. Applications may be downloaded (click here) or, to receive a renewal application by mail call (615) 251-8590. Complete and sign your application. Mail the application and the $50.00 fee payable by check or money order to the following address: Tennessee Department of Safety Handgun Permit Office 1150 Foster Ave. Nashville, Tn 37243-1000 Incomplete applications cannot be processed. Agreed, Dixie, fewer and fewer areas of this fair city are "crime free" now. It is only in certain parts of the city that I feel comfortable not having a pistol on my person. That is usually at home.

I have to agree, rights not exercised are easily taken away. Too often we see rights trampled on. Anyone watch Cops on Saturday night? I saw 2 cases where the cops did something wrong. 1. - Though in plain sight, a police officer reached in to a car and pulled out a pack of cigarettes which was closed, he then opened it and found a "stem" in it. This man went to jail because of an illegal search and seizure. He had not given permission for the police to search his car. The officer simply reached in took out the pack and opened it. 2. A police officer was searching a persons car and opened a piece of mail that was in a sealed envelope in the car. This was AFTER the person had given her true identity to the officer. Isn't that a Federal Offense? Sitting by and allowing the police, the general populous and the politicians unfettered access to our personal lives is disgusting and something must be done about it. If simply choosing to carry a firearms WITH A PERMIT on your hip gets you in trouble, then my friends we do not have the freedom or the rights that we are guaranteed in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.

We can make a long laundry list of reasons why any one person would want to do anything. As long as the person performing the action feels it is the best action for them, they are going to do it (regardless of legality.) Personally, I am on both sides of the fence here. I open carry on days that it suits me to do so. Where I used to work was in a bad part of town, the boss did not allow weapons on company property. The dress code was such that if I use IWB I would be retucking my shirt once I got to the parking lot. It was easier for me to slip a paddle holster on my waist and place the pistol there. Sometimes I stopped for gas or breakfast. I open carried in to those establishments with no problem. Other times, like when I go to the zoo, I definitely CC. There is a sign out front that states "No firearms" and that is all. It doesn't meet the regs for being verboten, there for I cc there. Mainly because I have rambunctious little ones and I wouldn't put it past either of them to find a way in to the lions cage. I want to be able to drop Tom the tiger if he gets too close to my precious angels and not have to wait on Zoo staff to come in with their tranquilizer guns. Sorry city, but if it is a choice between a zoo animal and my child, I am going with my child living any day. So to tell some one that they are stupid or insane for OC, well, that is like me saying why do you even need a gun on you to begin with. It is a choice that each individual has to make. As for the Knox County PD. I would be willing to test their "code" of saying throw the person to the ground if you see a gun. That is an egregious abuse of power and SHOULD BE PUT TO THE TEST. This is not something that we can accept from our law enforcement officers and if this is the counties policy, it needs to be changed. A simple asking for a permit would suffice and then if the person refuses, gradually increase the methods needed to gain complicity. Starting with a take down tactic is a sure way to have a lawsuit against the city, the officer, and the county filed. I want to see a case where this happened directly to the individual reporting it, not as a friend of a friend of mine scenario. Those who give up freedom for security deserve neither.

Point blank, carry how you feel comfortable, but carry.

Home Attack in E.Nashville
saintsfanbrian replied to The Rabbi's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
The problem is that more and more criminals are getting bolder and bolder. They often don't care who is looking because more often than not, even if they get caught, very little is done to "damage" them. Spending a few days/weeks/months in jail is a badge of honor these days. It gives them more "street cred" for when they launch their rap career or go in to the gang. For all you know, this could have been an initiation of some type. Yes, 2 thugs trying to break down my front door would have been enough to fear for my life. The problem is that in this country we care more about animals than we do human life. That is evident by the outrage over the Michael Vick case, vs. that of the Terri Schiavo case a few months ago. But I digress. If the neighbors could see all of this going on ahead of time, why did no one call the cops to report suspicious activity? Why did they wait until after the thugs started attempting to break in to someones house. If someone doesn't belong in my neighborhood AND they are acting suspiciously, they will atleast get an interview by me or one of my neighbors as to whether they are lost if they need help finding their way to where they are supposed to be. This does 2 things, lets criminals know that we are a tight knit community and that we watch out for each other, and gives us a chance to get a GOOD description of them, their vehicle or anything else we might need to provide the cops. Usually this will send them on their way. -

Really bad pun there hornet. My wife and I were discussing this last night during our bike ride and we can't imagine how this happened either. She actually thought of a way that the female could have been "enjoying" the gun but that was before I told her that it was the male that got shot in the head. The only thing I can really think if is a "role playing" scenario where she is "robbing him" at gun point. But that is as "dirty" as my mind wants to get on this topic. Have a great day, and don't put your eye out. -

A couple engaged in a sex act involving a firearm are no longer a couple. He is dead and she is going to go to jail. http://www.kplctv.com/global/story.asp?s=6879537 I know they are pretty and all, but why, oh why, would you use one this way. -
The only speech not protected is that which incites a riot. I can stand around all day singing white pride songs in the middle of downtown Memphis as long as I fill out the proper paperwork and get the right permits, there ain't a dang thing anyone can do about it. That is the way it should be. Screaming "FIRE" in a crowded theater is only done for mischievous reasons and is illegal. Carrying my glock with the handle sticking out of my waist band in an IWB holster is not illegal and I have done it a time or two. I will continue to as long as the summer remains as hot as it is.

In my opinion, the minimum amount of force to stop this perceived threat was used. He asked the person to stop, they didn't. The other thing he could have done is run up to the person and forcibly stop them by putting hands on him, possibly resulting in a law-suit. He could have gone inside in which case, had this been a true "home invasion" the person running up the path had momentum on their side to break in the door while the home owners back was turned. Pulling his gun, whether aimed at this "would be intruder" or not stopped the person in their tracks and allowed time for EVERYONE to realize what the situation was. Had he shot the person, I doubt not that he would have had a bit of time to "cool off" in the county jail.
-
I have to agree with molon here rabbi. When some one is running at you and ignoring you saying stop don't come any closer, they ARE a threat. Thankfully, the other person was able to finally stop and turn around with any damage done. Yes, I have the same rights as a police officer to go home safely at night. If you are running at me with no real reason to be doing so other than your own impatience and if I tell you to stop and not come any closer, whether I am at my house or at McDonalds, you are likely to be staring at a barrel yourself.
-
But would you "run towards him" or raise up your arm and say something. Unless there is a fire or something, I usually don't run towards anyone that I don't know. If the person turned around and went back in side, I would simply walk back up to the door and knock again. I would know some one was home and they would be able to answer the door and I could ask them my question.
-
The most I usually have is the grip of the gun sticking up out of my waist band and I have yet to get a dirty look.

Rock 103 used to play the entire thing on Thanksgiving day at noon. I don't think they do anymore. It has been years since I have heard it, but I wanna kill!!!! (not really, that is a line from the song too!!!)
