  1. If a guy wants a 300 Win Mag because he can shoot deer with downloaded handloads or hunt Elk with 200 grainers at full power, that is his business and that is fine with me. But I have seen personally, grown.....intelligent men???, miss a dear with a 270, blame the gun and go trade it for a 300 mag. Their view was they actually hit the deer and it ran off....maybe they did but if they did it was such a poorly placed shot they are going to run off with a 30 cal hit also. Another guy (honest, I am not making this up) told me he will not hunt with a 30-06 because he did not like the fact that the 06 would rise, fall and rise again in it's trajectory . That was priceless, I tried to explain how gravity works verses bore line/line of sight and I don't think I mad much progress. Good rifle, good glass, good ammo, know your load, know your limits in shooting ability = one shot, one kill....that is how it works.
  2. I got the data from http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp I realize the energy figures are vastly different. I am not sure I agree with the energy argument as long as the energy is adequate to get the job done. Whatever energy the bullet has when it exits the animal is not transferred to the animal, so as long as we are talking 110-150 lbs deer I think all these loads have enough energy to get the job done. Bear, elk, moose, 400 yard shots, different animal as it were.
  3. I have always been fascinated by the performance difference on many of the most popular rifle calibers, yet the beliefs and/or loyalties of hunters to one caliber over another based, supposedly on performance. I thought I would post some popular loads and compare the data. All loads are max and are quoted from the IMR/Hodgon website. 243 Winchester 100 GR. BTSP IMR 4350 42.0 2958 fps 257 Roberts 120 GR. HPBT IMR 4350 41.5 2780 fps 25-06 Rem 120 GR SP IMR 4350 52.0 3049 fps 260 Rem 140 GR NOS IMR 4350 43.0 2715 fps 6.5x55 Swede 140 GR SP IMR 4350 45.0 2677 fps 270 Win 140 GR SP IMR 4350 53.2 2916 fps 7mm-08 140 GR SP IMR 4350 46.5 2826 fps 7x57 Mauser 140 GR NOS Hod 4350 46.5 2682 fps* 280 Rem 140 GR NOS Hod 4350 53.5 2918 fps* 7mm Rem Mag 140 GR NOS IMR 4350 62.8 3045 fps 308 Win 150 GR NOS IMR 4064 47.7 2903 fps 30-06 Spr 150 GR NOS IMR 4350 58.0 2942 fps 300 H&H 150 GR SP IMR 4350 73.0 3215 fps 300 Win Mag 150 GR SP IMR 4350 74.0 3254 fps *Hodgon powder, all others IMR I am not trying to argue that there is not a difference, just that the average eastern WT deer is not going to notice the difference with a well placed shot, from a well constructed bullet, in the vitals inside 200 but much more likely inside of 100 yards.
  4. I just thought of a great example, it was easy as it was my biggest screw up ever. :doh:I started reloading with a Lyman 5-0-5 scale, that is it had 5 grain increments on the course side with a 1 to 5 grain adjustment on the fine tuning side. I was loading 8 grains of unique in one of my favorite loads so I move the course adjustment 1 click, 5, the fine adjustment 3 grains to get 8 total. I bought a new Ohaus 10-10 scale to replace it. This of course has a 10 grain course and a 10 grain fine adjustment. First early Saturday morning I went to loading, I went into autopilot, I moved my course adjustment 1 click, just I like had done for years, moved my fine adjustment 3 for a total of.......wait for it......13 grains of Unique. You with a 10 grain fine adjustment I needed to leave the course on 0. , needless to say, for the first time in my life I pearced a primer. Did not hurt myself or my revolver but I learned a valuable lesson about distraction, I was in a hurry that morning to do some shooting and had not had time to do any reloading that week and new equipment....understand how it works. I still have that Ohaus scale and it is still my primary scale. Be careful and don't hurry when you load ever. I still shudder to think what could have happened. I was 22 then, I thank God I will see 47 in a few days, with both hands, both eyes and all my face, though that revolver is long gone.
  5. 3150 fps on a 7 mag is about 200 fps faster than published data and 2600 fps is about 300 fps slower than published data and my own experience in many different 30-06 rifles I have owned with 150 grain bullets. I would say one is optimistic and the other is very light. The reality is that they are not 500 fps apart, you might be getting more velocity from the longer barrel but probably no more than 150-200 fps from a normal full power 150 grain 06 load.
  6. First, let her get lots of dry fire practice to build some muscle memory. Second, make sure the gun does not hurt her when she shoots it, I will flinch after a while with a 44 mag and uncomfortable grips. Also, make sure she is wearing good hearing protection, use plugs and muffs if possible. Third, slip some dummy rounds into the mag or cylinder so that when she yanks the trigger and the gun does not fire she will see what she is doing. Lastly, check to make sure she is using a proper grip and not just what feels good to her, what feel s right to a novice most often does not work.
  7. I have to agree with deerslayer. Most folks would be much better served by a rifle that had less recoil, that fit them well and they can shoot accurately, a really good scope of lower magnification and good light gathering. But instead they want more power, recoil and a few inches less drop at 300. Most people hunt in the woods and take shots under 75 yards and if they were in the open, they never practice beyond 100 and have no idea where there rifle shoots at 200+. Ask most what the maximum point blank range is for their rifle, what there load is and where did they have to zero to get that the MPBR and they will look at you like you have two heads and tell you they zeroed there $49 Bushnell Sportview in just find at that beer can off the hood of their truck and (as I had one fellow tell me) "they have been hunting with the same box of bullets for two years, why do all that shooting?"
  8. Get a loading manual, several is better, I like Lymans 46th onward, and read it, read it and then read it again. Now, for a novel idea, follow the manual. I know they can be conservative, I have older manuals showing much hotter loads also, but for now, be wise, follow the manual. Start with 1 powder and 1 caliber and no more than a couple different bullets. Start light and work up carefully. Post pictures or have someone that knows what they are doing look at the fired cases and check for signs of pressure. Never substitute components unless you are well under maximum loads and if you do, reduce and start over. Try to pick up a chronograph, I recommend a Pro Chrono, it has worked better for me than my Beta Master Chrony(yeah, I know, good joke, snicker). If I had had a hundred dollar chrono 30 years ago it would have saved me a lot of time and money over the years. Used good brass. If you are not sure what the brass is or where it came from throw it in a bucket until you do or scrap brass price goes back up. Lets see, see how accurate a load you can make instead of how hot a load you can make. If you want to blow yourself up, buy some dynamite and do it right, don't destroy a good gun in the process. Last of all, and you have done the right thing here, ask questions, lots and lots of questions.

  11. I don't know about the rest of you but the only thing I would be willing to fight for in a grand scale sorta way is the original U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights taken in a literal intent way. Right now the Constitution has been so corrupted, soon will be gutted completely, that we will no longer be a Republic but a socialist democracy. And as I have heard it said, a pure democracy is like 3 wolves and 1 sheep discussing what they are having for dinner. As to who I would fight, those who want to do away with the Constitution that I and many of you took an oath to defend, or those that are trying to harm my family/community....whichever comes first. The other thing is I would hope that states group together like TN, KY, AL, etc so we don't have to go it alone as individuals, we all know, would never work.
  12. Don't be so sure about that timing issue there...... 1Th 5:3 When people are saying, "Everything is peaceful and secure," then disaster will fall on them as suddenly as a pregnant woman's labor pains begin. And there will be no escape. I expect things to get better, a lot better at some time, then the hammer falls.

  15. I asked and Tungsten told me I could place this in the lounge....didn't see lounge but if it is in the wrong place please move. That said, Just some general info, I am a member of Cornerstone Church in Madison TN. I am going on my first missions trip On June 27th. This is not, I repeat not a solicitation for money. It is a post to give anyone "who wants to" a chance to participate by supporting me in this endeavor. The cost is high and I am going to pay for a large portion of the trip myself, I am not looking for a free ride. India is a place with millions upon, millions of people who are trapped in darkness. Not everyone will have an opportunity to physically go but you can help send others. Our goal besides sharing the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is to build a church. We will be there 10 full days and will do much work both physical and spiritual. If you would, I would love to have your help, prayers and support You can email me at, glockshooter@comcast.net and I will send you the info and answer any further questions you may have. Be blessed in the Lord Glockster157
  16. I love the 1911 design also but I have also learned to appreciate some others. One I like a lot is the SW SS autos. Over the years I have had several of the double action/single action models as well as the DAO's. The ones I wound up keeping to carry and shoot is the alloy framed models. I have a 4563TSW that is very reliable, Commander size and weight and it is DA/SA. Ditto on my 3913 in 9mm. The reason I bring it up is if you wanted a 45 that operated like a Beretta 92 and had a similiar weight the SW alloy framed 45's would be a close match though the grip shape is a lot different than the Beretta being a single stack. On the Glock, is it a 1st, 2nd, 3rd generation? Box, Mags, Sights?
  17. 308/7.62 Nato....ammo/component availability will be more important than range or coolness factors. There are many good match grade 308 loads readily available plus reloading components also. And you have the advantage of shooting military ball in a pinch. The round is good to 600 yards+. Spend the saved money on better glass, bi-pod, sling, case, etc.
  18. I have had several M1 Garands. Interesting thing about Garands is they are measured for wear at the breach and the muzzle. Rule of thumb is 1 point per 1000 rounds fired. My first gauged 2.0 at the breach and 1.5 at the muzzle. I could guestimate it had about 1500-2000 thru that barrel. Still shot very well. I have been handloading since 1981. That really has no bearing on bore wear, in most cases, handloaders are going to take better care of their bores not worse. The cartridge itself is the main factor in barrel erosion. The term overbored is used to describe a large case with lots of powder behind a small-ish bullet. in other words, you have to push all that powder from the case down a small bore, i.e. throa wear/erosion. A 223 is much milder than a 220 swift. A 308 is very much milder that a large 30 cal magnum. Some of the worst offenders, 220 swift, 243, 25-06, 6.5 rem mag, not to mention monsters like the 30-378 Weatherby with is known to shoot itself out in 500 rounds. My advice, go to the range with the guy and shoot some groups. Look thru the barrel caefully from the breach and see what the rifling looks like from that end. Should be sharp and crips. Most people are never going to shoot even a target rifle enough to shoot it out, some may shoot it enough to lose that extreme edge, .25" groups got to .5-.7" groups for example. Most 308 barrels are probably good for 5-6000 up tp 10 K rounds for GP shooting.
  19. I realize we are in the age of Grace but this event kept popping into my mind. Jos 7:20 And Achan answered Joshua and said, "Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and this is what I have done: Jos 7:21 When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it." .... Jos 7:24 Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the garment, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had, and they brought them to the Valley of Achor. Jos 7:25 And Joshua said, "Why have you troubled us? The LORD will trouble you this day." So all Israel stoned him with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones. Sin has a consequence that goes a lot farther than we expect. We do not know how this sin is going to impact his life, his childrens life, his wifes life and the influence he has over others but we have seen how it has effected those like him. Wouldn't surprise me to find a lot more trouble in his sphere of influence in the future. Gal chapter 6:7-8
  20. the glock 28 is the subcompact 380. i have not seen many but it is a baby glock. I know what a 28 is, it is just that they are not allowed into the country. I have never seen one in this country.
  21. Now there is a thought I could have done without . I have smashed a few but I guess it is the machinist family background, we just take a a 1/16th drill bit or so and pop a little hole....stand back and be ready, she is going to blow when it goes thru. Good thing you wasn't LOOKING in the safe when you got distracted.
  22. I loved my 27 but every time I put it in a IWB holster it was too thick...at least for me as I have the bulge at the belt line. Not a big one just enough. So I tried one of those spring clips and I really like it. It was a little odd at first but it really grows on you. BTW, Since when can we get 28's?
  23. Not trying to brag....well, maybe a little , I have 3. I have found that with match ammo, Wolf Gold Medal, Eley Tenex, etc, both my American and my Silhouette will do tiny, tiny groups at 25 yards to the point it gets boring. The kind of bored I can live with though. Both 22LR guns were shooting the Federal Champion into about a 1/2" at 25 yards and the junky stuff like Remington Thunderbolt into 3/4" at 25. My 22 mag seems to like the Fiocchi 40 grainers best but I have more exploring to do. It will shoot then consistently under 1/2" at 50 yards but when I can keep everything so-so it puts them in one hole. I realized it is the scope not having parallax adjustment causing the problem. Got a Nikon with an A/O I am going to throw on it and try to do the one hole consistently. As to triggers, my silhouette came out best at 1lb 9oz trigger but the other 2 both do around 2lbs...clean. They are easy to adjust. I have CZ rings on one but I don't remember having trouble finding 11mm rings for the others. 50 Yard group using Fiocchi 40JHP in 452 Mag. Groups are even smaller from my American and Silhouette with Match ammo but I don't have pics By bbse at 2009-01-30
  24. There were a lot of 681'a, same gun as a 686 with fixed sights, but there were a ton of 686's also. Dealers at the shows back then used to have tables full of them and M66's for $225-250. Most were well carried and hardly shot and what was shot was +P 38's. that being said, what I meant about the triggers is that every shade tree gunsmith thinks he can do a trigger job on a SW revolver. I have traded for a lot of guns that had the springs cut, the strain screw backed way out(no biggy there), the main spring sides ground down($12-17 fix), the biggest thing I have encountered is the main SA sear has been rounded by polishing and you can push the hammer off from a full cocked position. I have learned how to fix all these but I have also learned to look for them also. What has amazed me is I have found many this way on gun shop store shelves(used of course) and when I point it out to the clerk they ignore it and put it back in the case.
  25. I see gun shops asking, in my opinion, extremely high prices these days for SW revolvers. I say that based on the fact that I see very few moving. One problem with the 4" 686 guns is that there were a ton of used police guns dumped on the market back in the early 90's. If you have the box and stock grips you should be able to get that $450. If it shows wear, no box, aftermarket grips, maybe had the trigger "worked"(always a problem with SW's) them you may not see that. I bought a 6" 686 with the wood grips from a fellow a while back for considerably less than $450, though I feel extremely blessed and lucky about that deal. Just trying to be real especially considering the economics of the times.
