For that budget you have the choice of several good companies. Armalite, Colt, Sig, and S&W all make .308 ARs for under $2k. Mega and some of the other "smaller" manufacturers do as well. Trigger and barrel are where you'll make your money on a long range AR-10 (before you get to glass and ammo). 20" barrel is about right, although the AR10 I built had an 18" barrel on it. It was a Kreiger blank done up by White Oak Precision and it was a tack driver. I never pushed it to 1000, but it could sure hold its own at 700-800, and I took a hog in Texas at just under 500 with it. Then again, if you're doing a dedicated LR platform why not go with the 20" or even 22".

This was a one time custom.

That is SVI's short, flat trigger shoe, anodized red. Their triggers have interchangeable shoes so you may be seeing the seam where the insert meets the base.

I picked up a box today to shoot tomorrow morning. Where are you going to shoot? If I can arrange the schedule maybe we can link up out there.

Completely understand that. I usually over-research things (if you ask my wife), but if I'm spending a bunch of money I only want to have to do it one time. If it was me, I'd find a setup for that $2500 budget, and if you want more after that, the AR-10 platform is easily modified and upgraded.

If you're looking for a dedicated 1000 yard gun, and it has to be an AR-10 platform, I think $2500 should get you the gun, but you'll spend another $2k or more for glass on it. If it's just for fun and only want to reach out on occasion to see if you can, then you might make that $2500 budget all together. Just to be clear, I'm no F-class or regular big bore shooter, but regardless of what anyone may claim 1000 yards is a LONG way out there for most rifles (and shooters), especially gas guns.

...is almost over. Got a call tonight that my long-awaited Infinity single stack will be here Friday. I'll crack a beer to that one. I'll post pics, but needless to say, I'm freakin excited! Just thought I'd share.

If you are good with the price of admission, the SCAR 17 will do what you're looking for then. Like I said, I'd own one if I didn't have a USPSA hobby to feed...

Ok, I'll be that guy...I like the SCAR-17. I've had no issues with the reciprocating charging handle, and in fact I like that you can switch it to either side of the gun to accommodate your strong hand (I'm a lefty). It's easier and faster to clear malfunctions if you ever have one and accurate about as far as you'd want to shoot it (understanding that it's not a sniper rifle). I guess the question is, what are you planning on doing with it? It is an ass-kicker on F/A as Comms pointed out, but you're not going get one in F/A so it doesn't matter. Trying to do 5-round strings for fun at the range the gun will walk on you some, unless you man up on it pretty hard. But, are you out to just hose close targets with .308? If not, then it doesn't matter. The gun isn't any heavier (practically speaking) than a good AR-10 platform. Are you going to carry it for long distances to get to a hunting spot? If not, and it's just a range toy, then what does it matter. As far as rugged goes, I've not seen one break yet, although I'm sure they can. Are you going to beat the hell out of it every single day? If not, then what does "mean rounds between failure" matter to you? At the end of the day, figure out what you want out of the platform and go for it. I'd own one for no other reason than it's a pretty cool gun if I wasn't allocating funds elsewhere. You can get AR-10 platform guns for less, but it depends on what brand/features you want. I built a custom AR-10 and spent the same as you would for the SCAR, so it just depends on what you want. Buy once, cry once and all that aside, if you like it, and can afford it, then go for it and have fun. And post range pics for us to enjoy...

E-file form1 for SBR timeline.
ARO Matt replied to maroonandwhite's topic in National Firearms Act (NFA) Regulated
It's amazing the difference from last year. Last August I signed an e-file form 1 for my SBR. Signed on the 4th, and had it approved and emailed to me on the 25th. 21 days...not this year apparently. -
Talking to me about Progressive Presses
ARO Matt replied to CommsNBombs's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I'm running a Dillon as well. Seems to do alright, although occasionally it can drop some charges that are a little farther off, plus or minus, than where I'd like them. I ordered an Infinity single stack 1911 about 14 months ago as a 20 year work gift to myself. I timed the order so it would be ready around my 20 year anniversary and so far it's looking like it'll be awfully close. -

I'm excited to get this gun, I've been waiting 14 months. I'm especially excited to get a 10mm of my own, I've been wanting one for awhile. How's that 800x meter for you? I've heard someone make the comment that it meters like corn flakes, but then I've seen a lot of people using it. I run N320 with 3N37 as a backup for .40 so it should translate over to 10mm alright. -

What load are you running for 10mm? I have one coming in next month and want to work something up when I get it. -
Glock factory barrel's effect on brass
ARO Matt replied to tercel89's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
No, sure haven't. Only .40 until now, and about to start reloading 9mm as well. -
I started reloading when I switched to limited division in USPSA. I had been buying wally-world 9mm to shoot in production through a Glock and couldn't bring myself to do the same in a custom .40. In retrospect I should have reloaded for 9mm earlier for the simple fact I can tailor the load to the gun and recoil I wanted and done even better in production. Bottom line (not upfront), get a reloading setup and don't look back. It's a nice thing to be able to tailor your rounds how you choose to. It's even better when you realize you're low and just walk to the press and crank out a few hundred rounds without having to leave the house.

Glock factory barrel's effect on brass

Maybe some of the "old" barrels trashed brass. The new ones aren't really "fully" supported either, but the minor bulge isn't bad. I reload .40 for USPSA and a lot of it has been fired through Glocks. The Dillon resizing die I use takes care of it with no issues. -

I can help with that...if you like FDE or gray... -
How's that .454 treat you in that 2" barrel?

Another off the bucket list, Ruger No. 1 45-70.

Not necessarily that model, but I'm itching for a .45-70...a lot. Nice rifle there. -
