MCTS USPSA Oct. 10th And 11th, Dickson, TN.
ARO Matt replied to Mechanic_X's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
I'll see you guys in Dickson tomorrow morning -
I'm planning on next week.

So what's up on the dates? 10th or 17th? Trying to plan my hunting, shooting, and family time...
-
Critical Capabilities (UnBranded AR) also makes a lower that takes Glock mags. MSRP is 169.95 on those
-
6.5x55 Swede is supposed to be a great round too, although I have no personal experience with it...yet.

The recoil difference between a .308 and .300WM is quite noticeable. Then there is the additional expense of shooting .300WM, reloading or not. Then you have to talk about expensive glass to get the potential out of the setup anyway. You bring up a point that a lot of people tend to overlook in the "which do I buy" conversation--NEED. Frankly, most woods hunters in TN don't need a magnum rifle caliber. Hell, probably don't need even .308 or 30-06 depending on the range they can shoot in their hunting spots. Now, people want what they want for whatever reason, and I'm completely on board with getting what you want because it's what you want. But to narrow down your choices you have to decide if you're getting what you NEED or what you want. Around here a .308 is more than enough for most things, and frankly I'm leaving the .308 in the safe this year for gun season. Most of my hunting areas I can only see about 150 yards at most so I'm sticking to a lesser caliber. For everything I've read from the OP I'm surprised no one has mentioned a 6.8 SPC bolt gun (since he doesn't care for the AR platform). That or a .30-30 lever gun gets you to 200 yards, and the 6.8 will push out past that. Neither one has much recoil and are cheaper to shoot, relatively speaking.

Yeah that's the better half's side of the workbench. Mine is blue and orange, but was covered with reloading gear the day I took the pic.

$70 seems pretty high for sure, however consider that the FFL dealer is making $0 on your purchase and had to pay to get the FFL to begin with. $10 of the transfer is the TICS check (TN uses its own state check instead of NICS, although they're linked). The dealer pays this fee for every call or online check regardless of the outcome. Additionally, to have an FFL you have to show that it's not just for you to bolster your own collection, i.e. you have to have a business. In TN it doesn't have to be a storefront, but you have to register a business. At the end of the day to register my LLC, pay for a zoning variance, pay for business licenses for the county and city, and all associated fees, plus get the FFL itself, it cost me over $1000 just to get in the door. Now, if that FFL only earns money from his business (I have a day job) then you trying to save a few bucks buying online doesn't help him pay his bills or earn a living. So he has to get it from somewhere, and a transfer fee recoups just a little bit of that time and expense.

Official Thread of 2015-2016 deer season
ARO Matt replied to rugerla1's topic in Hunting and Fishing
Blank for me this weekend. The buddy on the other side of the land had a good ten come around but only got within about 150yds. He passed on a basket 8 around 15yds so he can go after the ten over the season. -
I'm not sure if they're included on this contract as well, but MMC Armory has a contract for the M4 barrels.

They got lucky. I forgot it in the car after running some errands and doing the right thing at a posted "No guns" establishment. Then I didn't lock the car that night, of all nights. That was the only thing in the car.

So long story short, I had a Dan Wesson Guardian in .38 Super stolen from my car, in my driveway, sometime Thursday night to Friday morning. Gun is a bobtail commander 1911, black, with wood DW grips. Had one, 8-round magazine in it. Serial Number 1405865. Police report is filed and I doubt I'll see it again, but I'm throwing it out there just in case. I posted this in the Handgun forum as well.

I haven't got experience with the PK380, but I ordered a Beretta Cheetah 84FS for someone. It came in today and is a really nice gun. A little big for a .380 maybe but the SA trigger pull is great. For all the little things that I grumbled about with the M9 the SA trigger wasn't one of them.

They are spendy for sure. This kit actually comes with a NiB bolt carrier, bolt, and flat recoil spring as well as the actual stock because the design incorporates the buffer into the bolt carrier. Pretty neat setup and I like the compact design.

It's a POF enhanced trigger placement trigger. Just like their standard single stage drop-ins, but the trigger shoe is angled forward. Supposed to make your finger go to the same place every time, and it does. It's a nice trigger, but takes a little getting used to. 4lb pull but feels lighter. My six year old has a hard time reaching it but it's light enough he can run the gun.

It's a 11" stainless LaRue

Just installed an MMC Armory PDW buttstock kit on my Franken-SBR. Love the look of this thing and can't wait to get it to the range.

Well you mentioned it there...high end ML is what you'd need for range. I happened to be zeroing my 6.8 last year next to a guy with what appeared to be a pretty pricey custom ML with Nightforce glass. He was MOA at 400 yards with (I believe) a 300gr slug... Since you're sticking with the .308 pistol, post pics for the rest of us gun-nuts

My vote is for the M&P Shield or the Kahr. My first carry gun was a K-9 and to this day I wish I still had it. Long DA trigger, almost like a revolver and with the all steel frame really handles 9mm recoil easily.

HELP, New to State and Wanting to Buy first firearm
ARO Matt replied to leprechaun's topic in Handguns
Well I guess I'm eating crow on this one. I seemed to recall that being standard practice, and I know I've paid both in the past for in-stock items. However, after I did some checking with other dealers in and out of TN they all stated that was, in fact, NOT standard. I'm home based, I don't keep stock, and have only done internet transfers thus far...looks like I'm the ass on this conversation and I learned a little something new today business-wise. -
HELP, New to State and Wanting to Buy first firearm
ARO Matt replied to leprechaun's topic in Handguns
That's not necessarily correct. The FFL sets their own transfer fee. Correct, the TICS is $10. However, the transfer cost isn't to get a gun from out of state, or out of the area, to a local FFL. The transfer fee covers the cost to move the firearm, whether shipped in or already in stock, from the FFL A&D book to the customer. Technically there is no cost to an FFL for that paperwork other than time. And that is what the transfer charge is. The time spent to do the paperwork, the usage of a license which cost the FFL money to get and maintain. Now, if you have an FFL that only charges BGC and not a transfer fee for in-stock guns, well good deal then, I'd keep going back to that guy. Most places that I know don't run that way, including me, except for a few circumstances. Now, back to the OP: Regardless of whether you pay $10 or $35 or whatever, welcome to a 2A friendly state! I hope you find a lot of enjoyment in the shooting sports and hobby that you may not have had in NY. -

Where in TN are you moving to? If you are civilian you'll need the docs mentioned by Oh Shoot...TN license, some sort of TN utility bill with your name on it to verify residence in the state. Transfer paperwork and background check will run you roughly $35 total depending on the FFL. If you're military you can buy with an out-of-state license as long as you have a utility bill here with your name on it that shows you're a resident and a copy of your orders that assign you to a military installation in the state (Ft Campbell, KY counts because it is located in both KY and TN). -
Depends on the budget, but two that jump to mind right off the bat are the Dan Wesson Guardian 9mm and Springfield Range Officer in 9mm. Less than that cost-wise you have RIA and those are decent guns. More than that cost-wise...the sky is the limit.
