  1. Thanks for the tips. Just read the IDPA rules from the website. Maybe some of it will stay with me.
  2. How much preparation, equipment, etc. do I need to compete in my first ever IDPA competition? I have read that "new shooters" are welcomed at some events, and I've read that equipment may be available if the shooter doesn't have everything, such as mag pouches. Having no competition experience, should I get instruction on IDPA competitions before actually joining an event? I'm watching videos for beginning IDPA that show a requirement for a flashlight; do I need a flashlight? I am just starting to go through the rules on the official IDPA site. There is a competition this Wednesday. I kind of feel like jumping in. Is an IDPA event acceptable as a place to start learning the sport, or do I need to watch a couple, and buy all the gear first? My background, in shooting is pretty limited and restricted to static targets. I've had 30 years of infrequent range visits since military service; I did pass the HCP. I have done (only a little) draw and laserlyte practice at the house. Sorry, I searched both IDPA and IDPA preparation, on this forum, and didn't really get my answer. Thanks for your wisdom and assistance.
  3. Thanks for the info. I also need to know the "class" designations. What are DM, MA,EX,SS,MM,NV and UN? I want to use a S&W Shield in 9mm (CCP?) Thanks, again.
  4. Going to register for my 1st ever pistol comp., but not sure of terminology. I think CCP is conceal carry? I don't know what the classes or abbr mean. Just want to try IDPA, and will join if I like it. Could someone help with the class designations, please? Thanks
  5. I'm interested in the novice class. Anyone know and vouch for the new member taliv, and this event?
  6. Vortex makes a good unit. Their products have a lietime, unlimited, unconditional guarantee. I just got a Spitfire AR (specially made for 1/3 co-witness). Retail was $349; purchased for $230. It uses a AAA battery. The reticle is the best for me, using concentric circles. It's a prism scope, which is great for my astigmatism. I'm sure there is a model that you can use.
  7. Just a thought. Thanks for the replies.
  8. I wish there were a couple of Firearms Training Clubs where a group could practice on a monthly basis. The training opportunities I see on the forum are great, but really expensive (for me.) They are also intermittent. It would be great if gun shops, with the space, would sponsor this type of club. I envision a membership system that would be limited to a reasonable number of permit holders. It could be an add on to an annual membership. Meetings would be held at the sponsoring gun shop. One employee would ensure that all weapons are empty, and that no ammo is in the practice area; it could even be held in the range, so all drawn guns would be pointed downrange. Similar to martial arts, members would go through structured exercises like drawing/re-holstering, etc. The club or shop may have visiting experts. Some of the guys that put on 1-3 day seminars could provide instruction and build a patronage for the expanded version. Special presentations, maintenance workshops or product demonstrations could maintain interest. A gun shop could build a ready audience for new products and promotions, and get lots of social media endorsements. There are two primary obstacles that I could see, which I think have solutions. Insurance carriers may balk at having this kind of training, but if the shop already has a range, the cost couldn't be much more .... especially if it can document the safety precautions (no ammo, supervised and structured, participants are CP holders and annual members.) Perhaps the biggest obstacle would be getting people that would stick with it. But, if club members are also annual range subscribers, meetings should have sufficient participants over the long haul. The visiting experts, inside specials, etc. would also help maintain interest. Plus, a group of 30 members should facilitate a minimum viable class of 7 to 10 members at each meeting. What do you guys think? Doable? Will you ask your gun shop to sponsor one?
  9. That contract may not be legal. Were you paid as an apprentice? Have you added value to their organization during that time? Laws have changed, concerning apprenticeships. I think you should consult with the Department of Commerce and Insurance and or an attorney.
  10. Related. Anyone see big differences in the Aimpoint type tubes and Eotech type optics? I've read that Eotech is easier for "both eyes open," like home defense. What about 200yds, like the OP wants? Saw a Meprolight (Eotech type) for $325. Meprolight is Israeli made and they say it has a couple months battery life.
  11. On a related topic: I recently used Hooligan Cycles for a 10k service on a Super Glide. I couldn't be more thrilled with the cost and work. He went way beyond what I have experienced at any dealer that I've used. So, if you don't have the time, tools, inclination or whatever, give them a try. I have no relationship, other than customer, to this company nor to anyone at the company.
  12. You can get a lot of good info, help and support on a forum like xlforum.net, that is geared to sportsters. They also have great off topic threads!
  13. On a side note, you can get a basic course free of charge if you are a veteran or active military. See H-D website. Slow riding is much more of a "skill" than riding at speed, so you're well on your way. Congratulations on the new bike.
  14. Are you going to change your EDC? What do you think about EDC, at night, with the ported Shield's flash?
  15. Thanks Wingshooter. Spent a lot of time on those videos already!
  16. Looking forward to learning much more about the AR 15. And, getting ready to spend bucks on accessories. Got the Aero Precision AR 15, from Brownells. http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/receiver-parts/receivers/lower-receivers/ac-15-5-56mm-16-mid-length-rifle-prod82606.aspx?cm_sp=Landing%20Links-_-Landing%20Page-_-TP1_AC15_Firearm I haven't touched an AR since 1990, so I'm kinda stoked to get reaquainted. I know it isn't Daniel Defense or BCM, but I'll never compete or otherwise be in a heavy use situation until the SHTF. Went by Guns N More to ask about the Ruger and S&W on sale. Both are 4140 barrels and have carbine length gas systems, so I decided the AP price was pretty reasonable. I could have gotten close (w/stainless) @ Palmetto Armory, but prefer black. I think it will be a long time (or never) for a red dot sight; I'm thinking about the rail mountable M16 Handle. Any info or help welcome. Thanks to folks, in the forum, for helping with my education, past and future.
  17. Sorry if I'm not seeing the search function.  On a related topic, do you have insurance to cover costs related to a shooting incident?  Which insurance do you prefer.  It seems USCCA has a program that covers you up front, but it seems expensive.  Any tips?  Thanks
  18. I love my Shield with safety. I ALWAYS use the safety. It's set to be stiffer to engage than disengage (this is perfect for me.)  A little dry lube and a few flicks on and off did the trick. I grew up on guns with safeties, though. YMMV
