The military did what they did because of the ILLEGAL actions of police officers. The city, county, municipality has some culpability, as their employees are the ones who broke the law. If I have an employee who, as you put it, "makes a mistake", then I am liable for that mistake. I understand that there are some people who will almost always defend any officer for any crime or civil rights violation and write it off as a "mistake". Or simply blame it on the innocent person against whom the crime or violation of rights was committed. But I am not one of those people. I am certainly not a "cop basher", though I have no doubt that some will try to label me as one. I simply want accountability. Everyone is accountable for their actions, whether they have a badge or not. I don't want bad officers violating the rights of innocent people. I also don't want good officers being lumped in with those bad officers, as is so often the case, because of the actions of those few bad apples. Was the officers not knowing the law a mistake? Yes, it may have been. Was their falsifying charges and arresting an innocent person a mistake? No, it was a crime. Ignorance of the law is no excuse for a citizen, so then why is it an excuse for someone who is sworn to uphold the law? As for everyone being fired for "screwing up", that all depends on the magnitude of the screwup. The one in this particular case was huge. And yes, I do believe that an officer willfully falsifying charges and violating a citizens civil rights is a fireable offense.

I think the perfect end to this story would be for the soldier to have two badges and a nice cash settlement.

Contempt of cop is not a crime. However, false imprisonment most definitely is. I think the young soldier did everything exactly as he should have. You are not required to give up any of your rights just because an officer tells you to.
-
Assuming everything in the story is accurate, there is no way I would just let that drop. I'd want badges.

This is where I stand too.

Very nice.

Because Democrats hate Libertarians. Here is another John Stossel video. This time he is being interviewed by reason.tv - It is another good video, but it's not about gun control. In this one he talks about how, as a Libertarian, liberals hate him and conservatives like him. The part where he talks about that is from 1:03-3:58.

Here is another good video against gun control by another Libertarian, John Stossel.

1) Usage- Which 1911 do I need for this purpose- Gov't., Commander, or Officer? 2) Caliber- Which caliber of 1911 do I want? 3) Price- How much do I want to spend on this 1911? 4) Features- How much do I want to spend on this 1911?

I love Penn and Teller. They have done a lot of great episodes in addition to this one.

I think it's sad that the guy doesn't have any friends. I can tell because he doesn't have random streaks shaved in his hair and a picture of male genitalia drawn on his forehead.

You're right. In TN you must have your HCP with you whenever you are carrying, OC or CC. But, like OhShoot said, in NC, VA, and many other states, OC is legal without a permit.

First IANAL. But based on what I know, the officer does have every right to ask for ID. But the OCer has no legal duty to produce it. It might have been best to just produce some ID rather than start a storm though. I believe that he does have to give the officer his name and address, if asked. Fortunately, we are not required to have government issued ID cards to show to authorities anytime they feel like detaining us. At least not yet. It seems pretty clear, based on the officer's leaving immediately after the phone call, that he was told that he was incorrect in his handling of the situation.

That was good. Some of them are really hilarious. Unfortunately, virtually none of them are repeatable here.

I like it! A Lot!

.380 Ammo and Ruger LCPs at Mahoney's Today
USMCJG replied to waynesan's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I got a flyer from them a few days ago saying they were having a big sale on Rugers and that the Ruger reps would be there. Most of the prices in the flyer seemed pretty good, but I can't afford any more guns right now so I didn't compare any prices. My invitation said they were giving away 50 rds. of Blazer Brass .380 with LCPs. The sale is going on tomorrow too, according to the flyer. What's this about a gorgeous blond again? -

I just thought it was interesting, and might get some good answers here. My contribution is the old....."shoot 'em in the yard, then drag 'em into the house" . We STILL (unfortunately) hear this periodically in the HCP course, and always hasten to correct this misinformation. That is almost exactly what the police told my mother after our house was broken into while we were away when I was about ten years old(a long time ago). They told her that if someone was trying to break into the house to shoot them through the door and drag them inside and they(police) would take care of the rest.I still don't think it is a good idea, but the above is an absolutely true story. Back then, a widow with two small children might have gotten away with it though.

So I go to the La Vergne PD...
USMCJG replied to E4 No More's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Assuming that everyone who ever needs to go to the police station has a car or cab fare, then fine. But what if you live in the "hood" and have to walk 5 blocks to the station(not talking about La Vergne, I have no idea what kind of city it is)? And no, I don't believe for a second that any government agency will ever spend any of OUR money to make things more convenient for the HCP holders who help pay the taxes that pay their salaries. -

We're all smart enough to know that the law will be on the law's side even if the law is breaking the law. -

I really don't think the point is whether or not you would need a gun INSIDE the police station(although clearly officers think they do:p), it's getting to and from the station that is the issue, as someone else noted. Stations are frequently located in dangerous areas(it makes sense) and if you should have to walk to the station through said dangerous area, it might be nice to be able to do so without having to be completely vulnerable. I like the idea of gun lockers being made available for HCP holders that was mentioned by JayC. -

I felt kind of bad for the bulls and that dog. But otherwise, funny stuff.

If she is just the apartment manager, and not the apartment owner, I'd do everything in my power to get her ass fired. If this was the owner's directive, then I'd get the hell out of there so fast their heads would spin. And I'd make them take me to court to get any unpaid rent too. They could keep the deposit and kiss my ass.
