I thought .38 Super filled the slot of a semi-auto version of the .357 Magnum?
No, the .38 super replaced the .38ACP. It’s more of a hot 9mm. It’s not at the performance of a .357MAG.
Honestly I’ve not seen to many people using the .38 super as a defensive round. I’ve seen them mostly used in competition in 1911 target guns because they have a flatter trajectory with less recoil.
I think the closest performance to a .357MAG is a .357SIG. But I’ve never messed with the .357SIG because it’s been plagued with problems.

The USCG's ability to take over control (temp change of command) of a US Navy vessel and conduct their mission is pretty interesting too. I never realized that there are USCG members on board Naval ships for that purpose (jurisdiction), but a friend/sailor was telling me about it. Still unsure of the exact details, but maybe one of our resident ex-squids can chime in. Pretty cool deal.
I don’t think we had any knee deep sailors on the ships I was on. But I guess they could have been undercover.
Taking Command of a Navy ship would be a pretty big deal. Obviously not something that is going to happen unless it is voluntary.

here's a fun fact for you guys that don't know it.
that pistol has around 100 parts in it..and only 2 screws..they hold the grips on.
That is also one of the very few pistols that use a “clipâ€.

It’s tough to pick out a favorite rifle, but I would have to say this is it.
1943 M1 Garand (Springfield Armory)
I love to shoot this rifle. It operates absolutely flawlessly and is a joy to shoot.
I stored the original stock away and that is a Walnut stock from Wenig Custom Gunstocks, Lincoln MO. The stock came unfinished and I fitted, sanded, stained it dark, and sprayed a gloss polyurethane finish over it.
I wanted a scope so I added the CMP Scout Scope Mount, Weaver rings, and a Simmons 2-6 X 32 Prohunter Hand Gun Scope. No permanent modifications had to be made to the rifle for this mount.
The sling is a Turner Saddlery “Carlos Hathcock Signature Edition National Match Service Rifle Slingâ€. Yeah, I know this rifle was before Carlos time, but I needed a sling and a few bucks went to his estate.
This is my 1944 M1 carbine (Inland…. I always have been a GM man.
) I haven’t shot this rifle much. I just got a supply of 30 carbine ammo, and completely stripped it down, cleaned everything, replaced all the springs, and hope to get to check it out soon.

In the XD line, the .45ACP seems to be one of their more problem-free guns. Ours run pretty good (when not using +P ammo). As our XD armorer, the main problems I see with our XDs is finicky mags (won't feed when dirty) and mag releases jamming up.
RCSO uses .45 XD's?

to the above question: I am thinking 308 cause I also want to "play" a bit and learn long range (sniping) skills...I am really looking for the "all around" rifle...I wont be hunting this year, but I plan on it next year. I want to practice a lot, and recently have this overwhelming desire to learn the art of long range shooting. (this is what you get from watching the military channel about snipers, and long range rifle competitions)
I looked at the Savage..I like them..I also like the rem 700...
Also, I have heard that I want a "Heavy Barrel" (Bull barrel?) if I want long distance...is there truth to that?
the cost of ammo is a little concerning, but I think I can afford the 308..now if the 30/06 goes just as far, well then, I would rather get that!! LOL
as far as the recoil, well, I will have to deal with that and strap a cat or something on my shoulder to absorb it...poor kitty
If you can ever get to Middle Tennessee on a weekend give me advance warning and we can go to a 300 meter range. I can let you use a Remington 700 VLS (that’s a Heavy barrel) .308 with a Leupold VXIII 6.5 X 20 scope.
(Among others, like a M1 Garand, M1 Carbine and a DPMS Panther .308AP4.
)The 30-06 and the .308 are pretty close but the 30-06 is a more powerful round. I suggest the 30-06 because you can get good military surplus ammo to practice with; that is not the case with the .308.
But having said that you need to shoot a heavy caliber rifle first. I try to put 100 rounds through my 700 when I go to the range; but I can’t, it just isn't fun. I can with my Garand or Panther but not with the 700. That’s why I just bought the Past Recoil pad.
Since all I’m doing is shooting paper anyway (I don’t hunt) I’m looking at doing a .223 set-up.
Everyone wants the perfect sniper rifle cheap. It doesn’t exist and you will soon find that out. A good starter scope for long distance will run $500. You can put a good scope on a cheap rifle and have a decent set-up, but you can’t put a cheap scope on a good rifle and have a decent set-up.

The only way to change that would result in outcries of "censorship". Regardless, the items that I highlighted in red are patently false and should not be considered as being gospel truths. There is far too much evidence to the contrary on both counts.
I can certainly see you making an argument or questioning the caliber statement.
But the head shot statement? Come on… a head shot with almost any caliber will turn you off like a switch.
Sure if it glanced off, you might live. But the “Shot Placement†guys are going to drill that baby right through the front of your head.

No, I was just kidding. Physics has nothing to do with it. 9mm is the best all around round there is. It also is cheap to shoot which makes it even a better round.

Regardless whether someone can or can't, it's what's NEEDED.
Knowledge is needed, to use a round that is capable of stopping the threat with a body shot, understanding physics and ballistics. Do you really think you can make a head shot when facing an armed perp? If you can why would you need a second shot? A head shot from almost any caliber will drop the person dead instantly.
Can a perp return fire on you while being hit with high velocity 9mm’s? Yes. The physics allow it. Can he do that while being hit by, 45’s or .357MAG? Probably not; the physics don’t allow it.
Surface area, Mass, Velocity, Energy.
We see .380’s and Glaser Safety Slugs being recommended on forums for carry rounds.
What do you tell your students when they tell you how their dad told them that a Glaser or a .380 is a great carry round?
Many of these people just learned which end of the barrel the bullet comes out and they are paying you for guidance. I’m pretty sure you don’t tell them a .380 in the pocket is better than a .45 at home.

A coworker dropped an AK armed murderer with a single 9mm FMJ round fired at a measured 72 yards under stress (he fired 4 times).Shot placement...it can work.
And I remember a situation where an Illinois State Trooper lost control of his weapon in a roadside fight with a perp. He managed to hit his mag release button before the perp knocked him out. Another responding trooper saw the perp standing over him trying to get the weapon to fire. He fired out the window of his moving vehicle on the other side of the highway as he was braking to cross the median. The perp dropped dead. Should we use that as an example of shot placement? Because the Trooper that made that shot said it wasn’t… it was sheer luck or Gods hand; whichever you want to believe.

I don't want to labeled as a trouble maker, especially on my first post, but I challenge most of these new fan-dangled cartridges to outperform the 100+ Year ol'e gal by any real measure. Well, as far as TN distances go.

Nothing wrong with the .303, but we have a good supply of 30-06 for our 03 Springfield’s. Plus our Garands use it.
Also nothing wrong with a cartridge being 100 years old; the .45ACP still holds the #1 spot.
Greek surplus is some of the best surplus brass I have ever worked with. Too bad I can't find any more. Headstamp HXP. Anyone know where I could find any? Live or fired, I don't care.I have over a thousands rounds of it, and know where there is plenty more. Unfortunately for you though it is in the mighty 7.62 X 63.

The only problem I have is feeding them. Dang those things eat everything I throw at them. I don't recommend wolf steel case ammo for them but anything else is fair game.

Heck, I've got 2 of em. They are a blast to shoot. Put a red dot sight on it and it's good to go, pretty accurate to. If you get one make sure and get the forearm grip thing, that barrel gets pretty warm.
Yeah, it looks like that forward grip would pretty much be required. I already have a holographic sight that would work well on there.
Have you had any reliability issues with yours; FTF FTE, etc?

If all I wanted to do was shoot Deer and maybe do a little practicing I think I would go with a 30-06. I have sources for good cheap practice ammo for my 06’s. Because of the war the only cheap .308 ammo is junk…IMO.
For your hunting rounds themselves the cost of ammo will be the same.
I want an entry level rifle, needs to be cheap in price and come with a scope, and be bolt action.I’m a Remington 700 fan for Bolts, but Savage has some packages with scopes pretty cheap, and the Savages are very good rifles.
Also… I know you said bolt, but last year Dick’s ran a Marlin 336 with a scope for $319. 30/30 lever is a great deer rifle.
help out...Until you are ready to get into the good stuff; buy used and buy stuff that you can flip and get your money back. Like everything else; shooting rifles is habit forming and it is expensive. As you get more experience that cheap stuff won’t make the grade and you will want to move up. In a year or two you will be spending more on a scope that you have budgeted right now for the whole package.

Which is the better cartridge - .40 or .45 - and why?
It depends on your priorities. I am not interested in velocity, wound tracks, bleed out, depth in a block of ballistic gelatin, or even death.
My only interest in a carry round is Stop The Threat. I want to make my attacker unable or unwilling to fire his weapon at me. The .45ACP is absolutely capable of doing that, and has been the undisputed king of defensive rounds for 100 years.
I have been in shootings and experienced the adrenalin rush. So unlike the “Shot Placement†guys I know that I can’t make a head or a heart shot every time, but I’m pretty good at center body mass.
The .40S&W may not be as good at that as the .45, but it is superior to the 9mm when you need a smaller firearm or a higher round count.10mm may be okay but it is not an option for me because I don’t see it as a mainstream round. It and the .45GAP I think of as “Cult†rounds.
.40S&W. is something that I will use when it’s not convenient to carry a .45ACP. Also, 15 rounds of .40 S&W is a hell of a lot of firepower.
There is room for another semi-auto round.
Behind the .45ACP in stopping the threat is the .357MAG. The .357SIG was designed to fill that spot for the auto loaders, but it fell short in performance and had feeding problems because it is a necked cartridge.

Yeah, I ordered a Crossbreed holster because it was suppose to be “tuckableâ€.
Now don’t get me wrong the Crossbreed is a nice holster, but the M&P is thick as a brick. I started laughing when I tried to tuck a shirt in.

Although many departments reviewed their weapons after BOA; I’m not sure any changed their handguns based on BOA.
I think that LAPD added rifles to squads after that and I think that may have been when they bought the Barrett’s.
There is a documentary that is about two hours long where they interview some of the Officers from the BOA shootout. If you gat a chance make sure you see it.
The situation had been brewing for a long time. (years). Due to politics cops have been out gunned by thugs for a long time. BOA put it on TV for the world to see.
People were sitting at home wringing their hands wanting to know why no one would do anything. It was because they couldn’t. An old 30-06 or .308 bolt action deer rifle would have stopped them. If a Barrett had been available I don’t think most of would have ever even heard about it; it would have been over quick.
But the Officers did not have the tools they needed.
We have done the same thing to our troops. How many of our troops have lost their lives because they were not properly armed? Many Police Departments have come to the conclusion that the 9mm simply is not an effective round for shooting people. Yet we give them to combat troops. We (Civilians & Cops) have better rifles and ammunition that our troops.
