  1. Yeah! Right on! And yeah I do carry a revolver daily. Part of it, imo, is simply familiarity. People who carry semis probably have put hundreds if not thousands of rounds through either that particular gun or others of the same type. If I had that much experience with a semi auto shotgun I would probably have enough confidence in one to use it for HD. But I don't. I doubt a lot of people have shot as many rounds through their shotgun as they have through their pistol.
  2. I would think if the loaded mag is in your glove box and the empty rifle is in your trunk you wouldn't have any issues. They arent readily accessible to each other. As for the SKS and strippers, no one claimed gun laws make any sense. In fact I'd say most of them really dont. Why is it that if I put an AR upper on an AR lower I am now a manufacturer but if I buy a barreled action and bed it on a stock I am not?
  3. What';s wrong with min wage earners? They are out working adding to the economy. They pay taxes. Presumably at some point they will want to make more money doing something else. I have much more for someone making min wage than for someone sitting around on welfare waiting for his next gov't check.
  4. I think you need to check your meds if you believe that any of my posts in argument on this had anything to do with illegal immigration. I do not know what you are spouting off about.
  5. Yes, you are done. Your position has been shown to be untenable and your arguments refuted. Your side which proclaims to have the interests of the underclass at heart in fact does its utmost to undermine those same interests and deny opportunity to millions. You profess to be happy that min wage jobs are disappearing. The alternative for such people is not faculty positions at Harvard or computer science engineering courses or even police positions. The alternative is welfare. Keeping them dumb and down on the gov't plantation seems to be the effect of Democratic Party policies over the last 40 years. Further this section is the Matters of Opinion section, so it need not be about guns. There are other sections to discuss caliber wars and AK vs ARs. As for socialism, there is difference only in degree between Stalin and modern West European socialism. Both of them consolidate state power, first economic and then political and personal, to the state. It is a slippery slope from Chirac and Schroeder to Chavez and Castro. Freedom everywhere will ultimately triumph because it is the natural state of man. You cannot deny economic freedom and have a productive society, as communism in E. Europe showed. You also cannot grant economic freedom and deny personal freedom, as the Chinese are learning now. It is all one.
  6. It just stands to reason: raise the price of something by setting an artificial floor and you will create surpluses by artificially reducing demand. I dont care whether it is milk or basic labor. This extends as well to illegal immigration. The illegals come here because there is economic incentive and a shortage of affordable labor in some industries. If you let the price of that labor float to market rates then the shortage would disappear. This is why I say anyone unfamiliar with an LX diagram doesnt need to debate this issue.
  7. I was hoping to spark outrage that our legislators would waste time on garbage like this instead of something important, like tort reform or tax relief. How was I supposed to know this board would get into the bestiality scene.
  8. Today's economy is the product of many things in the past. One of them has been the substitution of capital for labor. How many full-service gas stations have you seen recently? None, not because the economy innovated self-serve, but because labor became too expensive the service station industry was forced to innovate it. Higher labor costs have driven many things. The demise of the Colt Python is directly attributable to this. But the reason we have a high-tech economy has more to do with labor being expensive than the other way around. It has been cheaper to buy technology than hire people. It wasn't always so and has resulted in large-scale unemployment at the lowest levels of society. As for the good done to wage-earners at the low end of the scale, tell that to the unemployed teenagers (some 30%) and others just starting out in the workforce. Yes, the overall employment rate is high, but that does nothing for the people who need it most. The same people the Dems claim to represent.
  9. So the question is why we had so many more jobs on the lower end of the scale than we do now. Answer: the cost to employ people in such jobs has risen to the point where it is no longer feasible to have them. But you could pick any period and compare it with today and you would still come up with the same trend: minimum wage hikes have eliminated entry level jobs, especially so for minority teenagers. As this study reports: http://www.impactwire.com/article.asp?id=2714 I agree cost of living has an effect on wages. But it does not affect the number of minimum wage jobs in the same area at different times. And that was the point. There are min wage jobs in NY. That is a fact. There are fewer of them this year than prior to the NY legislature passing a higher min wage law. That is also a fact. An obvious explanation, one supported by basic econ, is that A caused B. You could argue other reasons and the min wage law is simply accidental to the situation. But I wouldn't believe it. This is the biggest lie of all. The choice is not between jobs at $4/hr and jobs at $10/hr. The choice is between jobs at $4/hr and no job at all. And no one can work his way up from no job. And the "right" market minimum wage is set by, obviously, the market. Not by some gov't bureaucrat deciding what business owners need to do or not do. Oh, and this "study" on the min wage came from EPI. The chairman of EPI is, surprise surprise, also the President of the Federation of...Municipal Employees. Looking at their articles they toe the union line. So this is hardly the work of dispassionate economists.
  10. Actually some of those people are in the Army. The military is a very good entry-level job for many people. As for bettering yourself, yes, that is what entry level jobs provide, an opportunity.
  11. I think courts see the permit as a privelege here. I also think they are wrong. And note to self: avoid IL like the plague.
  12. Hey, don't knock proven technology. When the world runs out of primers and brass I'll still be scattering lead.
  13. Uh, no. He represents that it is the minority view, but does not say minority of what. It is the minority political view. It is especially the minority view among Blacks, of which Walter Williams is one. He doesn't say anything about other economists. But find me an economist who says that other things being equal, raising the minimum wage will not eliminate those jobs. As for the comparison with 1948, the comparison is valid. Ditto with the case of NYC. The laws of economics work in NYC just like the rest of the world. The fact that costs of living there are higher is irrelevant. There are still minimum wage jobs, and fewer of them since NY raised its min wage. You keep mentioning other studies showing the min wage has no effect on employment. But you fail to cite even one. Let me: there was one done in N.J. that purported to show exactly what you are saying. But it was debunked because the study only looked at businesses that were still in operation one year or two years after the increase. If one factored in companies that no longer existed, the trend of fewer min wage jobs is clear. Education will not solve the problem, contrary to what you say. Some people in this country are simply not capable of achieving competance in academic studies such as to get a better job that by-passes the entry level. And that is what min wage jobs are, entry level work. Despite your assertions to the contrary, they are valuable to employees in learning basic skills, like showing up on time ready to work and following directions. That sounds simple but you would be amazed how many people cannot manage that. Entry level work provides valuable training in these basic things. And it frequently enables people to go on to something better.
  14. Actually the only shotgun I own is a Remington 870 Marine Magnum.
  15. Thanks. That was the best most concise description of a Terry stop I've seen. But it clarifies that merely sitting at a bus stop is not grounds for a Terry stop, or many other circumstances. And yeah, it is an erosion of civil rights.
  16. I'll mention that to my knowledge carrying a loaded long gun in a vehicle is prohibited in this state. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. That said, it would seem that a rifle/carbine with a detachable mag would be the ticket. Keep the loaded mag up front and the rifle in the back. What comes to mind is the Enfield in .303 or the Schmidt-Rubin in 7.5 Swiss. I wouldn't call either of those wimp calibers. The Saiga rifles are pretty good too, very reasonable cost.
  17. Another good reason to carry concealed. There is less likelihood of being stopped on foot. What is he stopping you for? This is an area where citizens really need to know their rights because if they don't they will give up a lot. I've had Black customers in my shop complain about police stopping them and asking if they can frisk them. I told them that if he is asking then he has no right to do so. If he could he wouldn't ask.
  18. Actually I am not confused on immigration at all. I am quite clear on it. I am equally clear on this issue. In fact, both issues have a lot in common.
  19. You are right, looking back at the post. I do not know what point you are trying to make. And no, it isnt rocket science. It is much more complicated than that.
  20. I am failing to see the advantages offered by the auto. As for manual of arms, a semi auto shotgun does not really operate the same way as an AR rifle. Your point about competition being a good crucible is valid, and I have often tested things using that. As for more people short-stroking, that is a concern. But how many people short stroked vs how many total pump guns there were and how many semi's were brought out? I personally wouldn't feel comfortable with a semi auto shotgun for HD. Of course I dont feel comfortable with a semi-auto pistol either...
  21. I could write a post proclaiming that APL is the greatest computer programming language ever and all programs ought to be written in APL. We could spend pages debating this. But the truth of the matter is that I literally know next to nothing about computer programming so my opinion here is worthless on this topic. When you write points like you did above, you show you have about the same level of understanding of economics that I do of computer programming. Until you understand basics of LX diagrams, substitution of capital for labor, price floors and ceilings, and elasticity there really isn't a lot that can be said. But while you get yourself up to snuff, take a look at this short article: http://www.gmu.edu/departments/economics/wew/articles/05/wage.html
  22. In your mind do Hi Points compete with SIGs or Glocks? Is going out to eat at Outback Steakhouse about the same as going out to eat at Krystal? If your answers are no then you have refuted your own point.
  23. Well, if $7/hr is good, then why not $10.hr? Why not 20? You cannot legislate prosperity. If that were so, France would be an economic powerhouse. The higher minimum wage hurts those workers and potential workers who need it most, namely teenagers, especially Black ones, and other just entering the work force. The min wage job is usually just a stepping stone to something better and in any case such jobs provide value to the job holder by teaching basic skills, like showing up on time sober and ready to work. When such jobs are priced by gov't fiat then the job will go away. It will get outsourced or simply eliminated. That is less opportunity for people on the lowest rungs of society, the very people Democrats claim to want to help. As for NYC, what does population density have to do with anything? Singapore has a greater density and its economiy is generally even better than the U.S. That is a non-argument. As for the accuracy of the WSJ, questioning its citation of a study is what people do when they cannot refute the conclusions. It's basic Econ 101: raise the price of something and you will have less of it around.
  24. I'd strongly suggest consulting a lawyer first.
  25. Hope the grand jury never gets a hold of those comments....
