No, never really delved into which frequencies they used. I was picking his brain for advice more than anything. Nice fella too. Are you familiar with the Old Fort area?

The Mosquito I owned ran 100%. I also kept the rails & slide well-oiled & shot CCI ammo out of it. This model had the threaded bbl & ran 100% with the suppressor as well.

But should a person lie to the police, they can be charged! Which is complete BS!!!! That court ruling allowing cops to lie with no pushback has got be one of THE worst court rulings in US history, IMO. Were I on a jury & it was established that a cop lied, I would ask the other jurors in deliberation, "If he lied then, how do we know he didn't lie on the stand?" Lying is a pattern, once people start doing it, they continue doing it. Too often when it's not even needed either, IMO. I hope everyone involved in this goat screwing loses their pensions & gets prison time.

On a lark, I took the practice test. Admittedly nothing squat, I scored a 20 out of 35 possible. Failed, of course. But as you said, I would imagine after reading the study guide for a bit I could pass easily.

I spoke to the local rescue chief yesterday, as a matter of fact. As for the cell phone, you must have missed the post where I mentioned an extremely rural & mountainous terrain? Cell phones are only covered in around 30-35% of my county. 40% of my county is Cherokee Nat Forrest, which doesn't allow cell towers. Chief also said he can reach their office from anywhere in the county with his handheld. As a rescue chief, he's all over the county.

There's a cool little cigar shop in Springhill, a former gas station, I think? I used to ride down from Nashville to shop there. Sits on 31W. If you don't do cigars, then ignore. LOL! Welcome to TN! -
This. They rarely have anything as mundane as a bolt action, most of their long guns are along the lines of "modern sporting rifles", aka black rifles. They also carry a good bit of higher end goodies such as B&T. A lot of their inventory isn't found anywhere else in Nashville. Another decent shop down the road is The Reloaders Bench. Exit Mt. Juliet Road from I-40 East, they're kinda close to the Captain D's restaurant. They do some neat used long guns, IMO. Ronnie Barrett has a nice, big new shop further out I-24 East, The Outpost. Sadly, I've not been in it yet so I can't comment on it. Depending on your direction of travel, Dickson Sporting Goods (In Dickson, TN) is usually worth a look. They're just off of I-40 West, about 25 minutes from Nashville. Franklin Gun Shop is an excellent place to kick tires on some upper tier shotguns. They sell at MSRP, sometimes a bit more though. Nice shop though. They're in Franklin, TN, just down I-65 South about 20 minutes from Nashville. If you do get there, check out their town square, it's like being in Mayberry, IMO. Free parking all around, nice restaurants, lots of history there. Beautiful homes too, all around town. If you have a wife, she'll greatly enjoy Cool Springs Mall, about 5-10 minutes north of Franklin. The Mid State is blessed with many good gun shops, IMO. Many aim for a niche in one way or another, some try to be an all-round shop. One could dedicate two full days to hit them all, counting the closer outlying shops. Good luck!

Some of the places I travel through has no one living near it for miles upon miles. Extremely remote, thus no cell signal. While I always carry, there may be a time when I'm too injured to hike out 5-6 miles until I reach something or someone. This is what I'm trying to prepare for, not to chit chat on a radio to someone living in another state. Unless she's female, of course.....................

Story Sounds to me like he had nothing to hide & wanted to prove his innocents. So, despite TBI-performed DNA tests showing he had nothing to do with the rape & murder of this poor woman, Det. Dunaway STILL got this poor man an illegal conviction. Det. Dunaway should have to forfeit his pension & be made to serve the 18 years this innocent man did. Wonder how many other cases Det. Dunaway falsified evidence on? Is he in fact still on the job with Metro PD or any other agency? If so, why? And WHY did the DA agree to go along with his horse manure? This entire thing stinks six ways from Sunday. It reminds me of the old Marsha Trimble case where the investigating detective hounded a suspect (Jeffrey Womack) who was later shown to not be involved in her murder at all.

With CB limited to only 5 watts by FCC law, you're almost limited to a line-of-sight comms, it would seem? All the units I priced were rated at 4 watts, so it seems to be the industry norm. I also note the other post about how little the CB bands are monitored and used these days. Might be the equivalent to a cassette tape in a digital world?

My thought is on a radio I can have someone call a cousin to come get me, Then *I* can make arrangements to get my truck/motorcycle home myself. Or I can help someone else that might be having issues as well. Here in the mountains of SE TN, it is a mish mash of having a cell signal one minute & move ten feet and losing it. There's multiple relay towers on the mountain tops, but they don't do cell signals (I think). I'm going to try to check in with the local county rescue squad, see if they have "a guy" who knows radios. Maybe he can fill in my (huge) gaps of not knowing anything or offer suggestions? Those guys deal with the ravines, hollows, etc where signals are hard to get.

The chief's & sheriff's DO like their power & don't wish to lose even a fraction of it, IMO. I also note it seems to be almost always the urban ones, not the rural areas. I also remember their outcry when the permit system was changed from "may issue" to "shall issue". Ditto for when full auto knives were legalized. One would've thought the world was coming to an end with the way they carried on. There's been multiple political chief's who said they'd remove ALL guns if given the opportunity. One was a former Memphis chief, IIRC? He may even be still in office?

I just took a practice exam for the HAM technician license, the lowest level possible. I scored a 20/35, which is failing. Considering I don't know squat about radios, I didn't think it was too bad.
-
Yeah, I already knew there was going to be licensing involved. Nothing flies through the air without the gubbermint getting their cut. I just want to be able to call for help were I stuck somewhere there's no cell signal. There's lots of repeating towers on the local mountain tops, but I don't believe they do cell phone towers there.
-
Yeah, I recall that from my days fooling with radios in the Marines. So.......... do I just give up on the CB? Get a cheap HAM for the truck? What?
-
HAM has a gazillion times more watts than CB does. So how does one speak with someone in their area for road info instead of someone 100 miles away? Does one just ask "anyone around mile marker 123 on I-24?" How would that work with HAM & its extended range? Obviously I know little to nothing about HAM as well.
-
And ALL the political police chiefs & sheriffs (Shelby, Davidson, Knox & Hamilton counties) will be baying their opposition to this.
-
Are they worth getting anymore? I was looking at some Cobra-brand models earlier. They're basically $100-150, all are 4W power. As I understand it, 4W is the max power rating. Yes, I know everyone & their brother are going to HAM radios but I have neither a need nor desire for one of those. This will be for truck use only. Traffic issues, no cell signal, that sort of thing. All I know is the quality of the antenna matters a great deal as well. Aside from that, not much at all. Thoughts, please?

I wasn't aware of them until I saw this thread. I've seen their Beretta copies & they weren't awful or anything. Slightly unrefined but their price reflected that, so it wasn't like they were overpriced, IMO. A quick look in GB showed none of their HP's were listed, so you must be spot-on about their availability. I too am going to wait for a SA model to find me. I've already got two spare mags & grip screws for new G10 style grips. Haven't gotten the grips yet though.
