You can pry open one of the POS chinese safes about as quickly as you could pop the door open on your closet door, so I guess I would save my money and buy a better lock for my closet door......... MB

If you are going with the LOW end big box store safe I would stay away from the electronic locks that they offer. All of them are very cheap and knock off chinese locks that have high failure rates. You get what you pay for. MB

All of the safes you find in the big box stores are made in china and are of questionable security. I will start and list the various safes and where they are sold. TSC: Cannon , can be pried open in under 1 minute with a standard crowbar, look at the bolts or really the lack of bolts and the flemsy construction. Unfortunately TSC seems to be stocking the cheapest products that their buyers can find. Dicks: Stack on, they make a really good thin metal cabinet that is like a thick cardboard box. Their safes are very cheaply made, the locks are very poor quality also. Academy: Cannon American Eagle, same as TSC Costco: Winchester, looks impressive with a thick door but very weak design where it counts and they have had a problem with the chinese fireboard that had a tendence to mold due to an excessive amount of moisture in the board. Sams: Remington or any other cheap safe they can carry, same as the above mentioned safes. Lowes: Liberty , this is the cheapest safe that Liberty makes and is one of the few safes that they still make in china. They make alot of other quality safes but this isn't one of them. All of these stores sell safes on price not quality ! I have serviced and worked on all of these safes and can tell you from first hand experience the lack of security that they provide. If you just need a metal box well by all means try one of the these safes but just remember that you get what you pay for. Security should not be one dimensional, whether its a safe or alarm or locks on your doors , it should be layered to provide the best protection. If you do get a safe, get the best you can afford with the thickest metal and best fire rating AND from a reputable company that stands behind their products. MB The Safe House

The Safe House Tennessee's Largest Selection of Gun Safes Over 150 Gun Safes in Stock Give us a call or come by the showroom today. 615-255-0500 Browning Gun Safe Update: One of the most interesting and innovative feature for the 2011 Browning line is the new Axis Adjustable Shelving System. It was designed to maximize storage space and accommodate many different items of varying size, not just firearms. Unlike shelves in other safes that are either fixed in position or offer only vertical adjustment, Axis shelves can be adjusted both vertically (up or down) and horizontally (right or left) to accommodate nearly any size item, while working around long guns. This new shelving system comes as standard equipment on Platinum and Gold safes, and is available as an option on Medallion and Silver safes. The patented DPX Storage System has been upgraded to incorporate a new Quick-Access feature that greatly speeds the positioning of those guns you'll be storing on the back of the safe door. The Platinum, Gold and Medallion models continue to come with Pry-Stop corner locking bolts to protect against a pry attack at the vulnerable corner areas. Light and Mirror Packages are standard equipment on the Platinum and Gold models, and are available as options on the Medallion and Silver models.

Both the V Line and GunVault brand pistol safes are dependable, but both have limitations just like any other safe. The GunVault is the best for quick access, the hand print on top can be felt in the dark and is easy to open even in the dark from a dead sleep. The V Line is easy to open but its door is not spring loaded like the GunVault door. Both can be bolted down, but are not very secure like a regular gun safe, they are more of a box than a safe. I have sold hundreds of both brands and have had good feedback from customers on both, but the Gun Vault is more popular. Here is a link to another brand pistol safe that is made in the US and functions well, 9g Products - Product Information If you have any questions contact us at The Safe House, we would be happy to answer any other questions. We keep all of the above mentioned safes in stock. MB

If you are wondering what the safe has been through before hand here is the video, it was dropped 6 times and then a pry test was performed on the door.

Time to buy a safe...any suggestions?
av88tor replied to Parrothead's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
All of the safes that you see in the big box stores around town are ALL made overseas. Most are of a poor quality and can be easily pried open. All bolting down a poor quality safe does is to give the bad guy more leverage to pry the safe open. If you only have a budget of $800 I can understand, I would suggest that you save up a little more and get a safe that you will be confident that your valuables will be protected. I have started a series of video's showing The Safe House safe torture test. I plan on testing various safes and posting the results online. The following is my first test on a Champion Safe. We actually dropped it 6 times but to edit the time we only show two drops............ Mark The Safe House -
We can ship to Memphis and have a company that can deliver into your home if needed. Just give us a call at 615-255-0500 and we can discuss your options.

A fire rated safe CAN protect your guns and other valuables from fire damage. Of course there are different fire ratings and types of fire tests. The most important thing to look at on a fire test or rating is the internal temperature of the safe during the test. Paper starts to char around 350 degrees and most gun damage doesn't occur until the 500 degree range. If you do have a fire that effects the safe you need to clean your guns. The longer the fire rating the better because, you of course want to keep the temperature as low as possible inside the safe. For example, if you have a 30 minute rated safe and have a 30 minute fire rating the temperture would reach the 350 mark, on the other hand if you have a 90 minute fire rated safe and have a 30 minute fire, it wouldn't even heat the the interior of the safe up much past 100 degrees. Hope this helps

If anyone else wants a good deal on a Champion Model T, we (The Safe House) have them for $799. Great Safe for the money.

If you call PS and ask them if their safes are made in the USA, their reply will always be yes. Ask them if you can come by their offices and take an look at a safe, the answer will be no. If they have nothing to hide they should be more than happy to show you a safe if you are in the Huntington Beach area. As for the manufacturing plant being located in HB, they told me their plant was in San Bernardino, CA. Sounds a little fishy to me................... "From what I can see the information you are posting is from the Warrior gun safe about us page (About Us!). I didn't find anything on there about being made in the US. The only thing that seems to be interesting to me is I no longer see anything that says their safes are made in the US." Thats the thing about PS they know how to play around the edges of the truth. I will post more in the future about other shady claims they make about their safes. More to follow............

I haven't posted any thing about Patriot Safe in awhile due to the fact that I have been conducting a little investigative work and wanted to let everyone know what I found out about Patriot Safe/Merlo Safe or any other name that they go by. Here are some of the facts about PS. One of the owners is Tim Merlos, remember that name for future reference. The address that PS list on their website is, sales@patriotsafe.com 17408 Beach Blvd. Huntington Beach, CA US Below are pictures of that address in Huntington Beach, CA. Doesn't exactly look like PS is doing much out of that location. Another point of interest on Merlo Safes website www.merlosafes.com is the phone number of 714.842.2227 which is not a working number anymore. Not really a big deal , but look at the format of the website, see any similar designs from the PS website? Same company, stay with me I'm going some where with this.......... Front of building at 17408 Beach Blvd. Next if you happen to be in sunny California and give ole PS a call and ask, "hey can I come over and take a look at your safes" they will say " Our facility is high security and we don't allow visitors" How convenant ! AND if you ask " can I come down and just pick up a safe they use the "High Security" line again. Okay I know you are thinking , hey a safe manufacturer should be careful about who they let in to their facility, right? Well below are a few lines from a shipping document that list good ole Merlo Safes as the receiver of a shipping container from oversea's. Hum, now why would a safe company that says " our safes are made in the USA " need to import 54 safes ?????? BILL OF LADING COPY NON-NEGOTIABLE BILL OF LADING NO. I have inspected one of their safes up close at my warehouse and everything that I saw from the cardboard over the safe, the wood on the pallet, the paint finish and the smell of the interior pointed to the safe being made oversea's, even the banding on the box is the same that two other safe companies use on their oversea's manufactured safes. Well its late, to be continued.................. Next topics : Locks, Fire ratings and Over ride keys, OH MY !

No Fire Rating on these safes, Neat idea but I don't think this will be a big seller in the long run. If they would add a fire liner it would help, but at the price they sell for only a few people will buy them. The rotating interior is the biggest selling point but thats not enough to over come the lack of a fire liner. SH
-
The important thing to look at is INTERNAL temperature inside the safe during the test, because that is where your stuff is located . So if Browning has a 1 hour fire rating and the internal temperature only reached 275 degrees and another company had a 1 hour fire rating and the internal temperature reached 350 the Browning safe has a better rating. Also, when you look at someones test look how long the safe was exposed to the highest external temperature. SH
-
The fire ratings on Browning Prosteel safes are: Bronze Series: 45 min Copper Series: 1 hour Silver Series: 1 hour Medallion Series: 90 min Gold Series: 100 min Platinum Series: 120 min All of their test are done to an internal temp of 275, where most other companies run their test to a temp of 350. So if you compare test Browning comes out ahead. Fort Knox makes a great safe if you don't mine spending the extra money Fort Knox is a good choice, but for the money there are "better" safes for the money but if you want the best features, fire rating and price Browning is the winner. My company carries 7 different brands of gun safes, so don't think that I'm just pushing Browning.
