  1. Never underestimate the capacity for stupidity of state employees. I could tell you a long winded story about South Carolina, but... Good luck, and keep a copy of everything.
  2. Ruger MkII - the volkswagen of the 22 auto pistol world. That isn't a slam - for what goes into them, bugs are amazing vehicles.
  3. Mike, I can't say. Something silly, I'm sure. A pink feather?
  4. For those interested in the Buckmark Silhouette I mentioned: My sister-in-law has first shot at it, but in the very likely event that she decides she isn't interested in a pistol that large and heavy, then 'give it away' would be defined as, come up with a reasonable offer, cut it in half, or come up with any interesting trade. My interests are old colt auto pistols, US military rifles, Browning auto-fives and.... Hmm. Thats' about it, these days. I've narrowed my interests quite a bit, it seems.
  5. Hi Mike, Milsurps, and older commercial colts, are my thing. Sue likes 'pretty guns'. She's leaving the ring on, and wants to attach something to it.
  6. Another Fred Fan here. Frankly, if the party nominates Giuliani, they've lost my vote.
  7. You know, CMP's requirements for a club are very lenient... Ten members, an instructor, someone to be the designated contact with CMP, and regular shoots. Anyway, if we can get a CMP match up, fine, if not, we can still have fun!
  8. Lost in the mists of time, but the most likely story was that the ring was for clipping the rifle to a cavalrymans' harness. The army didn't go for the 1892 in any big way, but for some reason the rings stuck around, with the idea that a cowboy would tie a lanyard to his saddle, avoiding loss if it bounced out of the scabbard. These days, it is mostly for putting an annoying mar in the finish. Thus the leather thong, which serves no purpose except as a 'bumper' for the ring, to avoid dinging the receiver.
  9. Sue, my wife, has a new toy, in 357 Mag. You can tell it's a girl gun, because (Oh, I'm going to hell for this one).... ... ... ... It's wearing a thong!
  10. The medallist is nice, but the Colt is just plain fun to shoot. I have a browning silhouette model buckmark that I would almost give away. Haven't fired it in years n years.
  11. C.A.S., hope you can make it. Looking forward to meeting you all when I'm home. I put in a relief request today, so if the detailer is on the ball, I'll be headed your way on the 25th October. MolonLaveTN - if your better half is coming, I'll get someone to prep one of the CMP carbines for her to try.
  12. Thank you, President William Jefferson Clinton, for your presidential order to destroy the 750,000 M14's in inventory. May you burn in hell.
  13. This is beginning to sound like a plan. Would be a good opportunity for people to complete the shooting requirements for CMP eligibility. Fun, too... Okay, Folks, I have 5 or 6 service rifles (M1's and M1A's) to loan out. Want to make it a TGO match? Fury, once you get some info/confirmation from Charlie, maybe we should turn this over to a moderator for a new sticky topic.

  15. I have an old, well used Colt series II woodsman...
  16. The requirements are listed at ODCMP.com. Short answer is yes, but check anyway, you would be surprised what counts as affiliated.
  17. I don't have my rifle s/n's handy out here.... Molon Labe, if you and your wife can make it to the next shoot at my place, maybe we can arrange to get one of the carbines cleaned up for her to try. Caveat - no wolf steel case ammo, please. Hard on the extractor...
  18. Well, my place is okay for pistols, but I don't have anything like the range needed to exercise these gals. Maybe we can work something out with Cherokee rod and gun? Right this minute, I don't have a relief identified, so I am not sure when I will be off the ship. Shooting for 25 October, with 60 days at home. They're gonna scream about the 60 days, I already know.
  19. Fury, Any interest in a Garand-only match/fun shoot in November?
  20. I've heard that New Yorks' low crime rate is actually a result of them not reporting the crimes, rather than a drop in same. No hard facts on this, just secondhand info.
  21. Thanks guys! I appreciate the offer, but I've already tested the Garands. Hey, home in November, and the weather should be perfect for getting some trigger time. Marswolf, you're another Garand owner? Thats' three of us on this board that I know of. Heck, we're ready for our own Garand Match. Actually, that sounds like fun... Any other M1 owners interested?
  22. Calibre .30 M1 Carbine, magazine fed. Both of these were made in 1943 by Inland. Ballistics are a bit better than a .357 mag (115gr bullet at 1950 FPS), so this 5 pound package is handy and fairly hard hitting inside 100 yards. Originally designed to replace/augment the 1911 .45 pistol for second echelon troops - truck drivers, cooks and the like. Not intended as a front line weapon, it became popular with the troops anyway. More than 6 million were manufactured between 1942 and 1945, by several different manufacturers, including IBM, typewriter company Underwood, National Postal Meter and Rockola, the jukebox maker. Oddly enough, the only gun company to manufacture them was Winchester, which came up with the design. Originally supplied with disposable 15 round magazines, later 30 round magazines were issued when the M2 (full auto) version of the carbine was released. The 'disposable' 15 round magazines are still the best available. The rifles below are the M1, popularly called the Garand. .30-06, fires from an 8 round, en-bloc clip. Accurate well beyond 600 yards, possibly the finest iron sights on any rifle ever made. All four of these were obtained through the good graces of the Civilian Marksmanship Program, which makes available rifles and ammunition to qualified shooters on a very cost-attractive basis.
  23. Turns out that Top Notch had 8 mags, 3 still in the GI wrap. Also, whatacountry.com has some GI mags, although their price just went up. A fellow on the CMP forum has some original, unissued WWII mag pouches, and I have a line on a nice sling and canvas carry bag, so I am pretty set. An old sailing buddy of mine orders ammo for a local (to Norfolk anyway) gunshop, so I got a good deal on 2 cases. I'm set! I just need to get home, so I can post a range report.
  24. My Inland carbines arrived from CMP today.... Photo courtesy of my wife, Sweet Sue. (shes' a dam' fine shot, I'll call her whatever she wants) Good match for their big brothers, I think...
  25. Mike, I've used the lee loader, and it can be a hoot. Really gets some odd looks if you start reloading at the firing bench. Bolt action only, of course, as it only neck sizes the case, but if you are working up an accuracy load, it can come in handy. Once you've got the load development done, it is more worthwhile for the laugh value, I think... Watch out seating primers, though. I've had one or two go bang while seating, for some reason...
