  1. As a son of a competitive shooter I learned gun safety and handgun shooting at the age of 8. My brother and I were taught firearms were dangerous tools and could only be touched with Dad present. Had to memorize the NRA gun safety rules before getting a BB gun. Was on a .22 rifle team about age of 13. When children are interested in your firearms don't make it a mystery by telling them "wait 'til you're older". Teach them young and teach them correctly. Most young children will listen and obey the rules.
  2. One of our more active Lakeway TFA chapter members has just informed me that he's heard that a Hamblen county commissioner is going to bring up the closing of the county parks to the handgun carry tomorrow 18 June, 2009 at the county court house. I addressed this possibility at the chapter meeting last night. Apparently the Morristown city council met last night and with the rumor of the council addressing park carry a large number of pro-gun citizens attending the council tabled any such discussion to the next meeting. Part of the park carry bill provides that local governments may opt-out of allowing those with handgun carry permits (HCP) to carry in city/local parks. According to the Hamblen county web site, http://hamblencountygovernment.us/ while the commission normally meets the Thursday following third Monday each month: "06.26.09 - Update: Hamblen County Election Commission Meeting The Hamblen County Election Commission regular monthly meeting has been rescheduled. The meeting will be held on June 26 at 3:30 p.m. in the Election Commission Office. An item on the agenda is the appointment of the new Administrator of Elections." I note that this doesn't match the report of a 18 June meeting. They could be trying to sneak it in could they? I urge all pro gun citizens to attend these meetings to show our support for our gun rights. As of February 2009 there are 2721 HCP issued to Hamblen county citizens. Tim
  3. Remember, local elections are often decided by a few hundred votes or less. Remind councilmen and commissioners how many HCP's are in your county.
  4. Check with M & M Firearms in Whitesburg, Hamblen County. They just went through this battle with the county commissioners and got state approval. Marvin Greene there should be able to give you an idea what lies ahead.

  6. Giving terrorists Miranda rights changes the mind set as well as the legal issue. They now become criminals instead of combat insurgents. This change is unnecessary as the military tribunals provided more defendent rights than many civilian courts/laws. Terrorists are not covered in the Geneva Convention nor should they be.
  7. A difference between Obama and God is that God doesn't think He's Obama.
  8. One bright spot in all this is that many county commissioners and city council members have gone public on their antigun stance and now we know who to replace in the next election.
  9. Based on the last veto I think Bredesen will veto all pro gun bills as he has nothing to lose.
  10. I agree, drop the local parks part of the bill and keep the state parks. I don't see the House supporting a veto override on this one; they might even make it an opt-in instead of the opt-out. We can come back for the local parks later.
  11. Tennessee Firearms Association, Inc. Legislative Action Committee 11 Jun 2009 The Tennessee House has moved to recall the parks bill from the Governor's desk. http://tnga.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=2&clip_id=1639 Time code 3 hours 9 minutes Rep. Nicely made a motion and it was approved to recall the parks bill HB0716 from the governor's desk. Senate will go into session at 3:00 p.m. today and will likely address this issue this afternoon. Efforts seem to be underway - in fear of a threat of a 2nd veto - to amend the previously passed parks legislation to strip out local parks. The veto threat likely is not just parks but all other firearms bills including confidentiality, wildlife management areas, etc. This is evidence of clear intimidation by the governor's office to abuse his authority and discretion with the veto and may be some form of retaliation for the veto override on the restaurants. The question is - does the legislature have the time and the votes to override multiple vetoes? Is the legislature willing to come back for a special session if the governor is not truthful and is just buying time so that he vetoes them anyway after session? Call your legislators and let them hear from you. They need to know if they have the public support for overrides or if they need to just cut the best deal they can with the governor and come back another day on the issues that he stops. The question is whether enough Tennesseans and enough gun owners can raise enough horning honking, emails and phone calls to push these bills past the governor or whether in fact we lack the votes and must compromise. John Harris Executive Director
  12. Then there's Senator Jackson.
  13. He had to be out of town when the override vote was taken. Steve is and has been a support of gun rights from the day he was elected. Nothing has changed.
  14. Now we can start the count down as to how long it will be before the NRA claims the victory was theirs.
  15. So apparently guns and alcohol only mix if you're an LEO? Heh.

  17. I find it interesting (or disturbing?) that so many of the Representatives/Senators state they "plan" on voting to override the veto. I am more encouraged by those that state they will vote to override.

  21. http://endangeredowner.blogspot.com/2009/05/tennessee-sportsman-senator-doug.html Tennessee Sportsman Senator Doug Jackson Sponsors HSUS Anti Breeder Bill How can a member of the Tennessee Legislative Sportsmen's Caucus (a group that looks out for the interests of hunters) ALIGN themselves with the BIGGEST ANTI HUNTING GROUP in the country??? By signing on as a sponsor of the HSUS driven TN Commercial Breeder Act, that's how. It seems that Senator Doug Jackson has a conflict of interest going on here. On the one hand, he is a member of a group of dedicated to "protecting" the interests of hunters against ANTI hunting groups. While on the other hand, he has signed on as a sponsor of the TN anti breeder bill, pushed by the biggest ANTI hunting group of them all: The Humane Society of the United States. Perhaps Senator Jackson doesn't realize that sportsmen and hunters keep and breed dogs? Perhaps Senator Doug Jackson didn't read the memo on which animal rights group (the Humane Society of the United States) is the BIGGEST ANTI HUNTING LOBBYING GROUP threatening U.S. sportsmen today? "If we could shut down all sport hunting in a moment, we would." Wayne Pacelle, Senior VP Humane Society of the US (HSUS), formerly of Friends of Animals and Fund for Animals, Associated Press, Dec 30, 1991; "Only 7% of Americans are hunters. That means there are more of us than there are of them. It is simply a matter of democracy. The majority rules in a democracy. We are going to use the ballot box and the democratic process to stop all hunting in the United States... We will take it species by species until all hunting is stopped in California. Then we will take it state by state." (Full Cry magazine, October 1990) I think Senator Jackson needs a refresher course on WHO the enemy really is. Perhaps polite email reminders of his apparent conflict of interest are in order? As currently amended, the TN Commercial Breeder Act (SB258 HB386) will have a devastating impact on responsible sportsmen and hobby breeders: "Commercial breeder" means any person who possesses or maintains under their immediate control twenty (20) or more adult female dogs for the purpose of the sale of their offspring as companion animals. Just how will anyone PROVE to animal control or other inquiring entity, that one DOESN'T intend to sell the female's offspring? OR that one DOESN'T even intend to breed in the first place? The answer is: you can't. Under this ill written bill, ANYONE that falls under this definition is GUILTY. It doesn't matter that someone would rather have intact animals vs sterilized ones. It doesn't matter that someone may have only had ONE litter in the past two years and KEPT the puppies for themselves and not for sale. How does one prove these things? YOU CAN'T. This anti breeder bill has set the trap for sportsmen and hobby breeders alike. And with the help of Senator Doug Jackson. A person who has been entrusted to LOOK OUT for the interests of hunters in the state of Tennessee from ANTI hunting groups like the Humane Society of the United States. And one more thing, sportsmen and Senator Jackson, this quote sums up the animal rights/anti hunting agenda pretty well: "The entire animal rights movement in the United States reacted with unfettered glee at the Ban in England ...We view this act of parliament as one of the most important actions in the history of the animal rights movement. This will energise our efforts to stop hunting with hounds." Wayne Pacelle, CEO, Humane Society of the US (HSUS), London Times, December 26, 2004 The last time I checked there are dog breeders that breed hounds ....hounds used to HUNT.
  22. I too believe the race determination on the birth certificate is the true issue.
  23. Having read that it is corporate policy for Waffle House to post I made a point of visting one in Morristown and it is not posted in any manner. I'm thinking it may be a franchise decision.
  24. In spite of what one Representative stated about the low frequency of crimes in state parks the passage of this bill would allow us to carry in National parks in Tennessee should that federal regulation be reinstituted; hence another need to get this passed.
  25. Didn't know the TSA issued a statement on this. A Sheriff's department is actually promoting carry badges?
