  1. Yeah the Mosin is a simple rugged design. I like taking apart a Mosin a lot better than a Mauser. The Mauser bolt will kill you the first time you take it apart.
  2. Nice video. Too sad its all true.
  3. Well I heard a few birds way off and heard 2 shots about 6:30-7:00 am. Set up on a bird and called off and on for about an hour. It started raining hard at about 7:30. I got up and started walking out and went about 50 yards and might have run off the bird I was working. It figures............
  4. I hear ya. So it looks like you got rained out too.
  5. Bearman where is Lake Chilhowee? Nice pics.
  6. I love this thread. I've been rackin' my brain and can't think of anything interesting to tell about. Like some of the other posts I've found old house foundations and chimneys. Nothing really outstanding though.
  7. Heard one gobbling yesterday evening and 2 gobbling this morning. I wouldn't really out listening. But they must be turning on.
  8. My wife had a cousin that absolutely loved the Sierra 80 gr. He mentioned the Hornady 75 gr. too. He had a AR with a heavy barrel that was super accurate. His son has it now.
  9. Yeah could be. I'll shutup now.
  10. Yeah I hear its good stuff. I've owned a .380 and I use to think they were a joke but with good ammo they're not a bad defense gun. Not in the ballpark with .357,.40,10mm,.45acp but decent.
  11. Yeah anybody that is into milsurp rifles and handguns needs a c&r. I've seen Mosins that I know I can order for $100. or less selling in gunshops for 50 bucks more. Thats some markup. I've got my brother and nephew wanting to get a c&r now. Ain't it sweet. Oh yeah about cosmoline. Its rough cleaning the stuff off sometimes but these old rifles would look like crap without it.
  12. I've not listened for any gobbles yet. I've been waking up early enough just ain't got out. Seen a lot of scratching sign. I've not hunted "thunder chickens" in a few years. I'm looking forward to it this time.
  13. ftncityfatboy, Who did you order your 91-30 from? I ordered 3 from Southern ohio Gun. I got one Hex reciever and 2 round recievers. I reccomend the $10.00 hand select fee.
  14. Yeah the m44's are about impossible to find. I don't know any of the dealers that have any right now.
  15. Most 835 guns shoot good. Especially when you find the right shells and choke. I've got a 500 that I've had for a while and its a good'un. The 3 1/2 ussally shoots a little farther.
  16. I had a cousin that literally hated crows(Always wondered about him). It was because they had pulled up his corn in his garden every year. He hunted crows as much as he could. We made some silouette decoys and killed several. We had a Johnny Stewart mouth call that worked really good.
  17. www.bassonhook.com/fishforfood/carprecipes.html Jughead I found this. My grandparents used to eat carp when I was a kid. I don't know how they cooked them though.
  18. Anybody crow hunt? Its a crappy day with the rain and wind here so I'm online and bored. Anybody out there call the black aerial targets? A lot of fun with 12 guage pump or auto and high brass #5 or #6 shot.
  19. Tempest455 your right about the Mosins. The Steyr 95 is cheap too. The problem with the Steyr is the ammo. I mean its out there but its not easy to find. Thats the reason I've not bought one.
  20. What everybody else said. Nickel is a good finish. I like the brushed nickel finish really well.
  21. Chris, did you shoot him with a handload or factory load? The reason I'm asking is the Ruger is super strong and will handle some mean loads.
  22. Yeah it sure opens up a whole new world. I've been loading about 24 years. When you talk to someone about handloading that don't handload you can really confuse them bad. Even if you don't want to. I Like Pie brought up a interesting point.
  23. I bought my mine on Ebay. Its a .308, and a good manual. Basicly a collection of loads from several other manuals.
  24. I ordered a couple 91-30 Mosins from Southern Ohio Gun (s.o.g.). I've heard some guys say they don't like them, but I've not had any problems. Might want to check them out too. Hope you get your C&R quick. It took me about 8 weeks.
  25. The .257 is a good caliber. Its been loaded down by the factories for years but is now a lot better. I know I don't have to tell you this. What bullet weight did your boy use to hunt with? Oh yeah, very nicely built rifles. I know a guy in Celina that uses a .250 in a Ruger Ultralite and says it does great. So the .257 would be a lot better.
