  1. I have the Winchester from TSC and am happy with it. I would like to have a higher fire rating but this was the best I could afford at the time. Sometime down the road I will need a larger safe and will probably get a Browning or Liberty. I think for the money, the Winchester is going to be hard to beat.

    Kimber

I have a TLE II and it has been my favorite 1911. It has been very reliable with all types of ammo and more accurate than I am. I do use Wilson and CMC mags. The stock mags cause problems for some.
  3. FWIW they have a gun show in the fair grounds, the same place as the fair, about twice a year. There does not seem to be a problem with guns then. I have been to the fair for the last several years and have always carried and never encountered a problem. However, I always keep it concealed.
  4. I have become fond of western style shirts with the snap buttons On occasion when I feel the need to button up for what ever reason, the buttons are easily ripped open to gain access to my firearm.
  5. I have the one with the plastic insert "CSM" belt. I wear 36" pants but bought a size 40 1.5" width to help accommodate an inside waist holster. It is right on the line as far as being to long, should have got a 39. As far as the stiffness, I like it. It helps carry a full size 1911 with little problem. Any thing smaller, I barley notice it's there. This, and some good quality holsters are some of the best money I've spent on gun accessories. I got mine at Greene Military/Police in Nashville. They were the same price as on Wilderness site.
  6. Turret presses do speed up the process. If I hand primed my cases beforehand, I could get close to 200 rounds an hour on my LEE if I was really working at it.
  7. Hard not to agree with this. After 20 years loading on a Lee turret I too have switched to a Dillon 550. Can achieve much higher production if that is what you need.
  8. I have used a Lee turret since 1992. I just bought a Dillon 550 2 weeks ago just so I could increase production. The only problem I have had was I had to replace the nylon auto advance piece, takes about 1 min. and .30 cents. They can be set up to load left or right hand. They have quick change tool heads so you don't have to adjust your dies once set up. I find them hard to beat. The the Lyman, RCBS and Reddings are heavier built but again the Lee's seem to be built heavy enough. It's hard to argue with 20 years and still going strong.
  9. That is a shame. I had high hopes for the little DB9. It looked promising. I looked at one at my local gun shop a couple of weeks ago and it seems to be an ideal pocket gun, small, lightweight and in a substantial caliber. Maybe with a little time... It seems it took them a while to work the bugs out of their .380's

    1911 mags

I've used Wilson Combat and Nighthawk mags and have had good luck with both of them in my Kimbers and Springfield. I've read the link to Hilton Yam's site and he speaks highly of the Chip McCormick mags.
  11. I've heard and read very good reviews on them. It's just hard for me to overlook the external extractor. I know it is probably a better design over the original but I just don't like the looks of them, just a personal preference.
  12. I have them on my Glock 23 and a Colt New Agent and love them. For fast sight acquisition with aging eyes I have not found anything better. They do take some extra practice at distance to be accurate.
  13. I'v been using a Lee turret press since 1992. The only thing I've had to replace is the nylon bushing on the advance mechanism. They give you one extra and new ones are about a dollar. I load 9mm, 40, 45, 38/357, 223/5.56, 25-06. As said above, pistol is easy and relatively quick to load. Rifle is a little slower but the advantage to the turret press over a single stage is you can set up your dies and leave them alone.
  14. I had the XDM .40. It shot good, accurate and reliable sort of. However, for some reason, one time every time I went to the range, I would release the magazine while firing. I could never figure out if it was a problem with the gun or if it was me hitting the mag release. This is the only pistol this has ever happened with. I have Glocks, 1911's, CZ's, etc. I believe it was my grip and I was releasing it on one side or the other of the ambidextrous mag release. I researched it a little and could find no one else that had a similar problem as mine. I decided to cut it loose and get me another Glock 23....not a single malfunction since I took it out of the box.
  15. I know Rock Island also makes one in 9mm. Never shot one in 9mm but everyone seems to have good luck with the 45's.
  16. I have them on my Glock 23. I was somewhat skeptical about them before I bought them. However, after using them I am a believer. For me my eyes, I pick them up faster than anything else. At combat distances 7 yards or less they are very accurate and fast. With practice I have gotten good at hitting 6" steel plates at 25 yards too. I highly recommend them.
  17. I have not bought one yet but he will also make an IWB holster although it's not listed on his web site. He makes some very high quality holsters for a reasonable price.

    1911's

Keep in mind a "Commander" sized 1911's grip size is the same as a full size 5" 1911. Only the "Officer" frames are shorter. If you don't intend to carry it a full size 1911 is much more enjoyable to shoot and is, at least in my hands much more accurate. As you have found out the RIA seem to have a good rep going for them. However, one that has caught my attention lately is the Desert Eagle 1911. They seem to be well built and priced at about $675. They come in full size and a Commander. The only thing I don't like is the large DESERT EAGLE down the left side of the slide. Good luck deciding, 1911 shopping can be overwhelming with all the choices.
  19. How many rounds of ammo per stage will one need. Also, will a single mag pouch be sufficient or do I need a double?
  20. Moon clips are great for fast reloads but can be a pain to reload the clips. If it is a .38 you should still be able to load and fire with out the clips.

    Shooting question

I too am cross eye dominant. Right handed shooter, left eye dominant. When shooting a handgun I simply lay my right cheek on my right shoulder. It has worked well for me for a couple of decades of shooting, including my time in the Marine Corps where no one seemed to notice. I never knew there was anything different in the way I shot until it was pointed out to me in an instructors course I took this past summer.
  22. I have a High Standard "Double Nine" Looks the part of a Colt single action but holds 9 rounds and also is double action. Kind of hard to find but there are 3 or 4 of them on Gunbroker right now.
  23. No permit required and no school required either. You can go down and take the written test and get a learners permit but not required to get your regular license. You will however need your own vehicle or an employers vehicle to take the road test. Also, don't forget your DOT physical.
  24. Me and two friends were on our motorcycles, on the way home from Daytona Beach for Bike Week. When one of my friends had a wreck coming off I-10 to I-75. He was taken from the seen in an ambulance to a field where life flight could land and carry him to Tallahassee. In the mean time the Trooper on scene took mine and my other friends info and knew we were going up to the next exit to get a room. The trooper shows up about an hour later with our friends SP101 in hand and asks if we would mind taking the weapon it would save him a lot of time and paperwork and our friend would get his gun back a lot quicker. The paramedics while prepping him for life flight, found his gun and called the Trooper to come get it. We did not even know he was armed so we did not think to get it from him prior to him being hauled off. Can't say this is typical, probably not, but just my one experience. My friend ended up being o.k. by the way and his Ruger ended up being unserviceable after the wreck, bent the crane and cocked the cylinder sideways, couldn't even open it up too unload.
