  1. Hmmm...wouldn't have been the first time someone at the DL station gave out wrong info about a HCP. ....and I understand bad days/months/years.... Also in the spirit of full disclosure, I have thought about sitting through a course again....just to see what is taught now versus 13 years ago.
  2. To answer the second question first, Ever since the law was in place you didn't have to take a class again to renew, no matter how long since first getting your permit. You have always been able to renew up to 6 months before expiration and AFAIK it has always been that you have up to 6 months after it expires to apply for renewal without having to take a class again, you just can't carry until your new permit comes in. So even if it was 2-3 months after the expiration date you shouldn't have had to take the class again to renew, let alone a day or two. Depending on where you live there are seveal firearms courses out there not related to getting your HCP.
  3. Not everyone that drives a car is a NASCAR driver and/or an ASE mechanic. I really don't think you have to be a tactical expert and/or gunsmith to be able to carry.
  4. It's amazing to me how many people get a HCP and seem to only be interested in home defense. Has society programed them to think they need a permit just to have a firearm at home?
  5. Renewal refresher HCP class? You know you don't have to take the class to renew, right?
  6. I was going to jump in again...but after I thought for a moment...I said why. Because.... When the veto is overridden...39-17-1305 will be gone. So there is no "confines of a building" To prohibit carry a place will have to post. Now we know the can post as little as one room or as much as the whole property. So if they do post on the front door...it really won't matter where you sit, inside or outside. The new 39-17-1321 says, "confines of a establishment" IMO, that would include any outdoor areas as well. But regardless...the only time that comes into play is if you are armed and consuming and/or armed and under the influence, which you shouldn't be doing anyway. So while this was good debate...the days of it's relevance are numbered.
  7. +1 IMO the class is really supposed to be for those that have never seen a gun. Because otherwise I don't think you should need a permit from the state to carry.

    Firemen?

I joined my local Vol Fire Dept when I was 17, couldn't fight fire, just change air packs and gopher stuff till I was 18. The city sent us through all the state level traing, we also did training on our own. Main reason I joined was I figured I wanted someone to come put my house out if it was on fire...so I should be willing to do the same for them. From that I ended up going to EMT school, got my EMT-IV, but was only 19 and was hard to get hired on anywhere, final did, but got out of it and let it drop. Ended up going back to school a few years later and got it again...SO DON'T EVER LET IT EXPIRE if you can keep from it. Anyway...all of that said, that helped me get the job I have know which is working for Goverment Contractor on a ammunition plant on the Fire/EMS dept as a FF/EMT. If you want to help and/or have sense of community I'd say go for it, if not let it be.
  9. Let's try to keep any direct attacks on people out of this....of course at the same time, let's not try to invite any either. Thanks....
  10. Well if you have a TN permit, you do not have a concealed carry permit. I'm not saying that because you have TN permit you can OC anywhere...I know that in TX, AR and few other states there is no OC period. But this goes back to my point about it not being 100% clear. This from the OP's website (Handgunlaw.us) on National Forest Lands.... Carry In National Forests/National Wilderness Areas Now I know that LBL is not a National Forest, but it is controlled by the National Forest Service. The real problem goes back to what is stated in paragraph 4 above... IMO the ability to issue special local orders was never intended to allow them to prohibit carry in general. But anyway....I don't usually OC and don't often go to LBL, so doubt there is much of a problem for me directly.
  11. Wrong....even after the veto is overriden, 39-17-1311 will still cover signs posted in parks and 39-17-1359 signs in other places.
  12. Well me too, but the trouble with something being illegal and not enforcing is...they can always decided to enforce it without notice and you don't have much of a leg to stand on. ...and another trouble is, TN doesn't issue a "concealed" carry permit. If you OC you are not violating any term of the permit, but are you violating their rule?
  13. All that was ruled unconstitutional. All the AG opinions I have read say if a term is not defined in the statute, you use the plain language meaning. To me a building is a structure. Now I am not saying patio's and deck's are legal....I agree that those are "iffy" my point is though that open areas like a parking lot, a field, etc... wouldn't be considered "within the confines of a building"
  14. Well not now, but after the veto of SB3012 is overridden. Also as OS pointed out, signs are covered under different statutes depending on the place.
  15. Appears to be a legal posting.... What exactly were you looking for?
  16. Premises and building are not the same thing.
  17. There is not general US Forest Service rule/regulation/law against carry. However local and/or regional heads can issue "special orders" some have used this to prohibit carry in the forrest(s) they control. From what I've read it appears to me this is to be able to allow them to close roads, prohibit picnics in areas of bear attacks, or other "special" situations. It would be nice if the authors of the federal bill that allowed carry in DOI areas were to address this "loophole" that some Forest Rangers are using to prohibit carry. If the LE head of LBL is not going to prohibit carry, wonder why the head ranger just doesn't rescind the special rule?
  18. Hmmmm...interesting, if not still a tad bit confusing. It sounds similar to the info someone posted about TN state parks, in that carry is legal by state law now, but that the discharge is not, (not including hunting etc...) unless it was self-defense and that you would have to prove it was self-defense. So it sounds like LBL is saying the same thing in the end, but still maintaing that permits "technincally" still do not make carry legal.
  19. The question has been answered and there are already other threads on this topic (that a search would have revealed). So in an effort to head off a long back-and-forth in yet another thread I am closing this one.
  20. Yep...I never thought it meant a new law would go into effect in January, just that they would introduce a new bill to fix it.
  21. As long as you didn't have to go through the inside to get to the outside, Yes. However most places I know you would have to go through the inside to get to the outside...so (as of today) you would be in violation during that time. This has been discussed before and as far as I can remember, no knew of any case law on it (patios, decks, etc...) though. But otherwise within the confines of the building means just that, at least IMO. A parking lot during bike night is not within the confines of the building. Of course hopefully in the coming days this will be moot....well except as the new 39-17-1321 would apply though.
  22. That is a good idea, just watch and also make your choice on how often (or if) you want e-mail updates to threads you have subscribed to. But whatever default you choose, you can make a thread specific choice by scrolling down from the "Reply to thread" box to the "Additional Options" section Thread subscription > Notification Type.
  23. LOL...but Australian Karen is sexy.... ...and not just on the GPS, but for real. Meet the voice of GPS — and she's good with directions | Front page | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle The Woman Behind Garmin's Popular 'Australian Karen' Voice
  24. I have a Garmin Zumo 550 (latest model 660 now). It was on the high end, but it is designed for motorcycles, but also comes with a car mount. So I can switch back and forth easily. I did recently do the lifetime updates on the maps, but that was because I was updating each year and after about twice the lifetime pays for itself. Just a note...the lifetime is for the lifetime of that unit while you own it...it doesn't transfer to a new unit you may buy to a new owner you may sell it to.
