Handgun Laws for 18 Year Olds

Recommended Posts

I'm 18, I've been shooting guns since I was 10, and I'm finally at that magical age where I can purchase them myself. I know there is not much restriction on long arms at 18, but handguns obviously have quite a few, and in terms of having a gun for self defense I just prefer a handgun, so I had a few questions and was hoping you all could help me out.

I know 18 year olds cannot purchase a handgun through a licensed seller and must go through a private seller in order to do so, and I know that you have to be 21 (or military) to carry a handgun but what other possession restrictions are there?

Specifically:

1. Can I keep it in my car? If so are there certain requirements for storing it other than common sense gun safety?

2. Can I take it to the range?

3. Will I be able to purchase ammo for it?

It is my hope that they lower the carry age to 18, but it was also my hope when I was 16 that they lower the voting age, and right now the bill to lower the carry age to 18 passed the house but there hasn't been movement in the senate since april.

Thank you in advance for the help and sorry if this is a duplicate topic.

P.s. looking forward to being a forum member on here!

#1 answer yes but keep it locked up in glove compartment a safe under seat or in trunk of vehicle and store it before you reach where you are going so people don’t see you storing a weapon and break into it never leave in plain sight  you do not want the weapon in a criminal hands  carrying a gun is a huge responsibility  Knoxville has a large number of gun theft. Per year  From unsecured vehicles.   That end up on the street. Don’t let it be yours # 2 yes.     #3 state and federal law says you cannot sell handgun ammo to anyone under 21.at a business.  But you can buy ammo  from a private individual just as you can a handgun at 18  but some people still won’t want to sell if you look really young  also get all the training you can in legalities and in proper form and skills.  Good training classes on this form.  Hope this helps

you need to discuss auto carry with an attorney.  Strict reading of the TN law permits possession in an auto......but don't depend on LEO to know that.  Some will, others won't and there is where your hassle begins.  I would also recommend that you take the ECP course when you are within a year of your 21st BD.
