Swine Flu: Is it that big of a deal?

Recommended Posts

I heard some rumors about several children from Long Hollow Baptist Church contracting the Swine Flu virus while camping in the East Tennessee area, but I haven't heard or seen any mention of it on the local news.

According to the LHBC website, Approximately 600 middle school students and adult staff and volunteers recently returned from the trip, and "several" have become very ill with flu-like symptoms.

After doing a little searching, I found that several parents of students who attended the East Tennessee camp have confirmed their children did contract Swine Flu while at the camp.

I haven't been able to locate any hard numbers, but two Sumner County residents are saying that there has been about 65 confirmed cases out of the roughly 600 members who attended the LHBC camp. Again, I don't know this to be factual, just what I heard from a couple folks who are fairly close to the ordeal.

Anyway, I'm wondering why this hasn't made the local news. I honestly don't know if it's a huge deal, but they seem to make mention of isolated cases of Swine Flu that have been reported half-way across the country. Why not cases in our own backyard? Especially on what seems to be a fairly large scale.

Swine Flu: Built to keep your mind off the economy and to push through National Healthcare. Watch and wait.

I could see that. The gov't created it, they couldn't start it here, that would be too obvious. So they started it in a country no one gives a flip about. :P

Church Camp Members Affected By Illness - Nashville News Story - WSMV Nashville

POSTED: 12:16 pm CDT June 29, 2009

UPDATED: 2:41 pm CDT June 29, 2009

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A local church's summer plans were cut short a day early after an illness affected some of the 600 people who attended.

Leaders at Long Hollow Baptist Church said several of the middle school students, adult staff members and volunteers became sick while attending a summer camp in east Tennessee.

Some were being treated for the flu, while others contracted strep throat.

The church brought its high school campers home early because of the illnesses.

Leaders canceled Sunday services at all three Long Hollow churches in Hendersonville, White House and Gallatin.

As a precaution, the church has also canceled all Wednesday programming on all three campuses. Activities scheduled for July 4 and Sunday services on July 5 are expected to be held.

I'll say it again.

ITS

THE

FLU

If they want to scare me...they'll have to give it a different name...like SARS or some other really cool sounding name.

Granted I don't want the flu...swine or otherwise, but damn...it's the flu.
