difference in .17 calibers

Recommended Posts

what is the difference between .17HMR and .17HM2? i think the first one is hornady magnum rimfire and the second one is hornady mach 2.

what is the difference performance-wise?

what are some quality rifles chambered for either or both? only ones i can find are the ruger 77/17 in .17hmr and the magnum research magnumlite in .17hm2

If you plan on keeping it a long time, I'd go with the HMR. I have both a Cooper and a Volquartsen in that caliber. It's a really fun round to shoot. Flatter trajectory than many big-boy rounds (like a .308), less recoil, cheaper, etc. It's really a target/varmint round, though, as it's typically found in 32 grain or 40 grain, the difference being in a bit of speed but mainly impact of the wind.

It's quite a lot of fun to shoot a round that arrives at the target before the sound even does.

My mistake--you're right. I was thinking of my .204 Ruger. The rest of it is correct, though. Sorry about that.

Now the 204 is a really sweet cracker. Nothing sounds like a 204. Fun gun to shoot. It's the the perfect Duiker hunting gun.

I think if I wanted a .17 i'd get a .17 remington. I'll go out on a limb and say you can hand load that cheaper than you can buy the rimfire stuff.

17HM2 is a necked down 22LR brass, and travels jusy over 22 stinger speeds. 17HMR is a necked down 22Magnum and travels over 2000fps

save yoiurself the agravatiuon of trying to finr hm2 ammo and get a HMR

Marlin 917,

Savage 93R17

Ruger 77/17

or buy a 10/22 magnum and convert it to 17hmr

and these are the ;low end ones.....
