Trunk Gun?

With Tennessee's new laws, does anyone here keep a long gun in their trunk? Do you worry about rust or explaining it when getting stopped by an officer? I have been driving 30+ years and have never had my trunk asked to be looked into during a stop. Thanks for any replies.

Concern about rust is the main reason my behind-the-seat gun is an Ishapore Enfield. All exterior metal surfaces are painted (neatly) black. Just have to keep the bore oiled.

The answer is always NO! If they didn't need permission, they wouldn't ask. Edited by enfield

Just store it properly in the trunk. In a hard case -

Never give permission to an Officer. If he is asking, you are already in trouble... Say no. IF he is persistent (see, told ya you are in trouble) ask him what his Probable Cause is. IF he still persists, still say no. (He is supposed to get a warrant then...) (NOTE: This is not legal advise of any kind...)

Remember: Never talk to the Cops. It will only get you in trouble. (Sorry, Officers.)

Lets not turn this into a "let them search,or not" thread, please.

There's enough of them around here already.

A dedicated "trunk gun",no,don't have one.

I do however tend to keep a few guns in my truck just in case I find myself near the range though.

Not too worried about rust as they don't live there, just stored on occasion.

Remington makes these really cool lil shotgun "shells" that can prevent rust up to 30cubic feet and include hangers...perfect for a trunk environment...that being said if I was to carry a trunk gun it would probably be a cheap (sub $200) shotgun in case it got stolen....if I need more range then a shotgun provides im driving away.

Um, Original Poster, why the trunk gun? What purpose?

IF it were a Bad Guy/self defense situation, you would have to ask the Bad Guy(s) to wait a minute, get out of your car, opened the trunk, opened the gun case, retrieve the rifle or shotgun, aim, and fire... So, self defense points towards an easily accessible firearm...

Magiccarpetrides has a point - stuff can easily be stolen from a car...

Rust, what is that?? I always carry a duracoated 870 in the trunk. Oil the bore nicely and take it out a couple of times in a month to clean it and make sure to re-oil it.

Question from someone not used to humid weather. how long does it take for a firearm to rust usually in Tn?
