All you need is one plug and one guide rod found here...

ED BROWN : RECOIL PLUG & GUIDE for 1911 AUTO - World's Largest Supplier of Firearm Accessories, Gun Parts and Gunsmithing Tools

There is no benefit from having a 1-piece guide rod and the negative of needing a tool to take your gun apart.

When I owned 1911s, the first thing I did was put a GI rod and plug in the gun if it came otherwise.

The full length is supposed to make your recoil spring last longer : or so I hear.

I've never seen any evidence of that and people with alot more 1911 knowledge than me have said the same thing.

Some research can be done here...

As JMB intended.

Also, a full length guide rod can get prevent one-handed cycling.

Question, Is there any reason why I cant just replace the plug? If I don't need the full length rod, can I just take the screw in piece off of mine, use the short piece and replace the plug with a normal one?

The threaded piece will be too long, with the slide fully retracted it will either bind on the spring coils or hit the plug.
