Guest thread view limit

Just got to get it off my chest... The guest thread view limit drives me crazy. What is the purpose? Is there anyway it can be upped?

I don't have all my cookies and everything turned on in my browser, so every time I want to catch up on the forum I have to re-log in. It's really annoying. Why not just let guests browse to their hearts content? Is there some benefit to forcing them to log in?
