If the US Government were a family & their household income was $55,000 per year, they’d actually be spending $96,500—$41,500 more than they made! That means they’re spending 175% of their annual income! So, in 2011 they’d add $41,500 of debt to their current credit card debt of $366,000! - Dave Ramsey

Yeah but they'd fifty kids and half the kids would want 50 buck to get on the bus. The other half of the kids would want 50 bucks to get off the bus. The weird thing is that they'd let the kids vote on it!

Though, really, the comparison to a family and the government is horrible. The government can borrow money for next to nothing, try that with a credit card. It won't happen. But Dave Ramsey is a simple minded man with simple principles and doesn't do shades of gray. No big deal.

There are entire businesses that are based off of borrowing money at X rate and making X+ return on that money (Coke was really good at this for some time)

With the government the road is tougher. If we had a for profit government people would go nuts. Selling wireless spectrum for what it is worth? Outrageous!

So the government is a bit different than the average family. That isn't to say that some serious cuts aren't needed. I liked the idea of giving seniors vouchers to seniors so they could buy there own health insurance instead of having medicare. I thought that it should've been adjusted for inflation but sacrifices have to be made. It didn't pass. I also loved the idea of students paying interest on their college loans from the start instead of the government paying for it. That was a non starter as well.

Both those ideas would have saved a ton of money, the kind of belt tightening we need.
