Gun Cleaning

Recommended Posts

I too clean it first, but only because I wanna see what it's guts look like

I didn't clean my Glock when I got it christmas. I did smear some red grease on the rails and lock areas. I clean it every 1K rounds, I break it down, wipe it off and regrease it after every trip to the range.

I clean (and more importantly inspect) before I shoot...mainly because I want to see for myself that the gun is in good working order. You never know what may have happened during shipping or at the gun store.

Ok let me toss this out there and get some opinions. Brand New gun out of the box. Clean it first or go shoot the dang thing then clean it. How often do you clean your guns?

Clean it for God's sake, I see this question posed all the time. When I got my SR9c, it had so much lube in it, the round would have stuck in the barrel. Take it apart, familiarize yourself with it, and clean it while you are in there. My $.02

I'd field strip a brand new one and clean out the assembly/preservative goop if necessary. After that.... I typically just wipe the obvious crud off of it and carry on. I don't field strip and clean but every 300-ish rds, or when the barrel begins to look cruddy. I've never done a detail strip just to clean one. Normally a little CLP and compressed air are adequate without taking everything apart. I believe guns get broken and/or worn out faster by obsessive cleaning than by shooting.
