That , Gentlemen, is an Umbrella Cockatoo! This one has more than likely lost its owner to death or a move. They live for about 60 years and they become completely in love with their owners - when the owner dies, or moves where they can't have parrots, or just plain ole gets tired of them- they normally just fall apart. To them it is like losing everything! They will pluck their feather and mutilate their bodies till they die . There are lots of rescues that devote everything - trying to save these parrots. I have two cockatoos, they are awesome pets !

When I was in Indonesia working in the Maluku's near Ternate these damn things were all over the place. The villagers had a program run by some international group and they were trying to keep them from ending up in the black-market - they were so freaking loud.

It does seem funny when you don't know the facts, but I was not offended. They are loud beautiful creatures and it is amazing how incredibly child like they can be! My umbrella will open and unscrew her food dish , then sneak quietly to my bed to snuggle! She will not eat anything that I haven't tried in front of her- she wants "mommy" to show her what is safe! And at night she sings herself to sleep! My Elenora cockatoo strolls thru the house saying ,"mommy where are you?". "mommy wanna play" "mommy loves Gabby"- I adore them!!! But beware - my umbrella can bite thru a chain like fence- they are not for everyone!!! 2 times a day the do an awful flock call which hurts worse than shooting an Ak47 without ear protection!! It is sort of like having a bi polar two year old for life!!! And I would never change it!! Thanks guys for being so nice!
