Accurate 4064 and 178 AMAX data needed

Recommended Posts

Has anyone used this load in 308 Win?

I always shoot 175 SMK's, but got 1,000 178 AMAX to try out. I have AA4064 (not IMR) (shorter sticks, meters easier).

Does anyone have any load data they use similar to mine?

Not looking for anyones Varget, RL15 or anything else load. Looking for particular data resembling what I'm using. IMR4064 data is fine, and should be within .01 grains of what I'm looking for.

I did make some test loads. Seated .010 (measured and seated off the ogive) off of my lands in my 20" Accuracy International.

So, whats worked good for everyone out there?

Tag for when I get home and look up my data. I'm using IMR 4064 for all of my 308 loads.

Looks like on the 178 gr amax bullets I'm using 42.4 grains of IMR 4064 Federal 210 primers and an OAL of 2.800". It has been very accurate out of my savage model 10 fcp-sr 24" 1-10 twist.

100 yard 4 and 5 shot groups of 0.5" and smaller. Edited by z0mbies fear me

AA 4064 has a very slow pressure curve making it easy on the base of the bullet upon detonation.  Pressure reaches max after about 2" of travel in the barrel.  It is a favorite powder of cast bullet shooter for the 'soft push' that the powder has.

If you check powder burn charts, you will see that AA4064 is slightly slower than IMR 4064.  Both are optimum powders for accurate loads in 30-30, 308, and 30-06.

Where do you buy AA 4064 these days?

Thanks for the info.

I got it from David a couple months back.

I have some long range match powder (RL15) but not sure if I have enough to make 1,000. Need 1,000 at the least for the upcoming shool. So just sticking with the powder I have. I have a couple cans of IMR 4064 so I figured its such a close burn rate, and I've read people within .1. Grain of their AA4064 load I should be ok if I need a little more than 8lbs of it.

I did get to shoot most of them. last 3 the chrono crapped out on me. I'm starting over from 44 and working to 45 within .2 variables. I'm still to slow. Might have to change powders, really dont want to.

I'll keep this updated as i get more solid info.

Well, figured I would revive this thread. I found my pet load and what I needed.

I ended up with LC 12-13 brass neck turned to .0135, flash holes chamfered and primer pockets reamed.
COAL 2.005
Ogive OAL 2.238 (.01 off lands)
43.6 grs IMR 4064
178 AMAX
210M primers

This gave me 2599 with the chrono and it being my high node. I had to settle for this because nothing was acceptable above it, the groups really opened up a lot the higher I went.

I shot the F-class on the 24th and with my 20" barrel I didn't do to bad. 558 overall, and my last relay giving me a 193-5x which I'm pretty happy with. I'll tinker with OAL a little when I have time, but for now this load is my go to load.

What lane/relay were you on?

9, 4th relay

We were the opposite then. My son and I were on #8 lane 1&2. He took 4th F/TR overall and missed the 3rd place spot by basically one shot. Arrgghh. Wind changed and he shot 8 instead 10 the shot before. Was a fun day.
