I posted this on the CMP forum but thought I could ask you guys as well.

How does a novice go about picking out the best rifle they can find? Do I need to bring all sorts of gauges, or a gunsmith with me? icon_smile_question.gif

Can anyone add to what AtlantaMax Posted - 12/26/2008:

"I think I have the CMP thing perfected... muzzle and throat guages in hand, gas cylinder wrench in left rear pocket, gas cylinder guages in right front pocket... work down the Service Grade rack (GI wood only) until muzzle guages 1 or less, check throat erosion, stock lock up, if everything checks out move onto the gas cylinder. Using this method as the initial screening turns up a several way tie."

Best Regards,

Mark

Yea you have to be a member of a CMP approved organization, BUT you can sign up for the Garand Collectors Association down in Anniston. The next thing you need to is prove you are a U.S. citizen, so take a copy of your birth certificate with you if you want to bring them home. I ran into this problem on the first trip but luckly my dad had his pilots license with him and they said that would work. Another thing about bringing them home the same day is the taxes. You will pay around $40-$42 dollars in taxes if you want to walk out with them. But if you ship them its only $22 dollars, so you can save $20 bucks that way. I had to have mine first one come home with me on the same day so I paid the taxes, but the second ones we had shipped. They are packed very well and made it in a timely manner. Also while you are down there buy as much ammo as you can afford, the .30-06 is a very good buy between .27-.30 cents a round for good stuff, its LC or Greek. It is cheaper to pay the taxes on the ammo then it is to have it shipped so take a truck or a friend that has one. If I can help you in any other way just let ma know.
