CZ Shadow, Single Action Trigger Issue

Recommended Posts

Yesterday my CZ Shadow started developing a problem with the single action trigger pulls.  The trigger pulls back but won't release.

I think this may be as simple as the screw in the trigger over extending not allowing the trigger to break.

DA shots all go off.

Single action is hit or miss, but I can't replicate the problem with snap caps.  It always releases the hammer.

Also, is this something that could be a magazine specific issue?

I shoot guns!  Understanding their inner workings is a work in progress but I'm sponging it up.

I would start by backing out the over travel screw in the trigger. Over time they can turn in or out and change their settings, even with blue Loctite. And if that doesn't seem to fix it then I would hose down the area where the hammer is with WD40. Let it set for like 10 minutes then blow it out with HIGH pressure air. Use an air compressor as those cans of air do not have enough pressure. After trying those two if it still is not working right it might be time to do a detail strip to look for wear.

Not sure if CZs can have the same problem but dropping the slide on a 1911 can ruin the sear in a 1911  but it causes hammer follow not what you are experiencing.

Thanks for the input. If everything appears to be working fine with snap caps wouldn't that suggest the problem is solved?

I can't replicate the problem now with dry fire practice.

I did back out the screw 1/4 turn.

Firing the gun will jar the trigger hard against the trigger stop. something you cant do with snap caps. The stop screw is your first step before shooting as suggested. But I do respectfully disagree with ever putting WD40 into any firearm mechanism. Its lubricating properties are temporary and over time, as it evaporates, it leaves a waxy film. High pressure air may well clear most of it out, but why bother. Just clean & lube with gun oil or if in a semi auto that see's a lot of fouling on the internals, I suggest Ezox oil. Its a dry lube that works great.
The CZ has a wrap around (magazine) trigger bar. If the stop screw dosent fix it, get the trigger into its bound up condition and see if removing the mag releases the trigger. If the trigger releases, you may have an out of shape trigger bar or a mag with a swollen body. Not likely but that's the next on the list before a tear down.

Using WD40 to CLEAN a gun is fine. I have used the method I described hundreds of times and never had an issue. I can assure you squirting some into the trigger mechanism then blowing it out is easier than disassembling and reassembling most guns.

I have recommended it here dozens of times and I have yet to hear of a single person who has had a problem using it as a cleaner.

WD40 is not even a lubricating oil. It is more of a solvent or cutting oil than a lubricating oil. And as a protectant it is awful except WD40's Specialist Long Term Corrosion. The Specialist Corrosion from WD40 is better than any other protectant designed for protecting firearms and that is fact, not opinion.

Well gents the problem is cured. Had a malfunction during an IDPA shoot with the Tennessee Action Pistol guys. They nailed the trigger screw as the problem right away. Fixed it at the shoot and perma fixed later with Loctite blue.

Just another reason that rookie shooters should get involved with their local shooting clubs. I think you would be hard pressed to find more helpful people.

If that works for you as a quicky clean, great. Personally, I would use your same process minus the 10 minute wait and substitute Engine Starting Fluid instead of the water displacing solvent. That cuts oily grime like nothing else off the shelf and you end up with a totally dry mechanism once your done blowing it out. A case of apples to oranges.... that's all!
That CZ is a fine pistol and probably the first and last issue you would ever have with it. I nearly bought one 2 years ago.

Thanks for the kind words. Malfunctions stink, but are a fact of life. Glad it was an easy quick fix!
