I developed a spreadsheet a long time ago which quantifies the dimensions, capacity, caliber, and average price into a 'score', which is then compared to my own individual subjective ratings of each handgun's Ergonomics and Class/Size (so it is compared to other similar guns). I'm always tweaking it, attempting to create an easy way to rank a large list of handguns by type, purpose, and desirability/value... The average score of handguns from specific manufacturers is factored in to each individual handgun's score from that manufacturer, thus creating some brand-recognition into the selection process... The price of the handgun is then compared to the average price of the other handguns in the same class, and based on its ranking by comparison, a boolean generates an indication of whether it would be a 'worthwhile' purchase, given its unique qualities. I can certainly modify it to categorize by the additional features you have listed... so far I have been merely generalizing those things based on my perception of a given handgun's overall 'Ergonomics', which I rate on a 5-point scale. I can even add more specific subjective criteria, such as for the trigger, grip, other controls, sights, etc... individually. This would create a database which was customizable to the preferences of the person using it, provided the time was taken to rate each pistol... I've got over a hundred handguns in the database now, and over 20 criteria for each which their rankings are based upon... I have been using it personally in the selection of several of my purchases in the last 2 years. Yeah... go ahead and say it, I know... I'm a nerd. But, I'll mess with it some more this week... I'll make it available for sarcastic criticism in a couple days.

Manchester TN -- Weekend of May 26th 2007
molonlabetn replied to TGO David's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
I will be running around in Manchester this weekend... If I can, I'll stop by to watch at least. I know that I won't have time to be there the whole time and participate. -
Leather is most comfortable for IWB carry, depending on the design and the firearm. Though, I've heard that Comp Tac's kydex IWB holsters are very comfortable, can't say I've never tried one myself however. Leather is almost always easier and more comfortable to conceal, even OWB, since kydex holsters are generally more bulky and stiff. When concealment is not an issue (such as open-carry, or at the range) there are many polymer/kydex holsters which offer excellent comfort, balance and retention... For instance, I love my Blackhawk SERPA.

Len makes several good points... I agree the most with the need for steps to be taken which reduce the benefit and increase the risk of coming into this country illegally. Let's make them not want to come here because no-one can afford to hire them, and they can't drive or show themselves in public without being arrested and deported. There also needs to be an initiative to promote the idea of the Mexican people taking back their own government... so instead of them coming here to take our country, they can model their own after ours, and enjoy their freedom and prosperity with dignity. Illegal Insurgents currently have no dignity... I can't believe that doesn't bother them. People who only thrive to take advantage of the people around them, and bring them down, deserve no honorable place in ANY society, much less one in which they are not a native. Let's make them not want to come here... through a combination of incentives to stay in their country, and risks for entering ours.

Well, I told her that it wasn't just a bunch of guys there... The prospect of having some ladies to socialize with piqued her interest. We'd certainly be up for dinner beforehand! -
TFA Nashville Chapter June Meeting (06/19/07)

I'll be there... and my wife expressed interest in attending, as well. -
Well, here's the big question... Will a pistol with slightly smaller height and length dimensions, but the same width be that much of a difference? I mean, a G19 isn't a very large gun... If you're wanting something significantly smaller, perhaps for pocket carry or as a BUG, something like a subcompact Kahr or a Kel-Tec would sound more logical to me. Magazine interchangeability is great and all... but if you'd be ending up with a gun that isn't much more concealable than what you have, I would suggest that you consider investing in a shootable practice/range gun which you would get more trigger time with, and then decide if it would be worthwhile to trade your G19 for a G26 as a primary ccw. In the end, though... You really ought to get what you WANT. It is your birthday, after all A G17 or 34 would be a nice shooter for you, and you'd have 17rd magazines which would still be compatible with either a G26 or your G19...

You're absolutely correct. However, I'm sure you realize that in this competetive marketplace, consumers gravitate towards businesses which not only offer great service, but do so at reasonable cost. The seller may ask whatever price they please, but in the end, each customer decides the value, individually. And decides whether or not to purchase based on that. An FFL who will treat me fairly during the transfer of a gun which they themselves could not have procured for close to the same price (or been able to find at all, for that matter), will get my business every time thereafter when they do have what I want in stock for a regular sale. I know many people who will go out of their way to buy available items locally, even if they are slightly more expensive (within reason)... I do. I have no reason to believe that you are not fair, quite the opposite, based on the excellent reports by several here. My opinion is simply the perspective of a potential customer who weighs carefully how his money is spent.
-
Yeah. There are many FFL holders who will recieve and transfer a gun for you, for around $20-$30, plus the $10 background check fee. Simply get their permission to have a firearm shipped to them, negotiate a price for their service, and then buy the firearm with instructions for where to ship it... Have the recieving dealer fax a signed copy of their FFL to the seller. I've done a few this way. It's pretty painless. As a matter of fact, I'm waiting on one to ship to my dealer right now...

It wasn't a V6... it was the 2.7 liter I-4. My std cab 4x4 with that big 4 banger was faster than the V6 Tacomas, and got significantly better mileage. Plus, with manual locking hubs, the driveline of my truck had less friction than the factory trucks with automatic hubs. It was a 5-speed and I didn't go with super high-ratio final-drive either... No, my wife wasn't standing over me... She actually really liked that truck too, to be honest. I got rid of it because I didn't have time to go off-roading anymore (got married). So now, my 'fun' vehicle is a 90's Camaro that I've been slowly (very slowly) making more badass over the last couple years... Will be building an engine for it this coming winter. I have no delusions of great gas-mileage for it though... (that's why I drive a 35+ mpg beater to and from work, and my wife drives a Ford Focus which gets around 30)
-
Yeah... The XD-45acp I tried in my SERPA holster once was a bit more snug than my XDs, but required no adjustment or extra effort to draw.
-
I had an '00 Tacoma several years ago, jacked up on 35"s, with some stout driveline mods... it still got 23-24mpg around town, and would outrun a 5.3L Silverado. I got it REALLY dirty, every weekend... Damn I miss that truck... But, I love my wife more...

For the most part I only drink at home anymore... With a meal, and not much, at that. I keep plenty of Bud Select stocked, but one 18 bottle case will easily last me, and any guests I have, a month. I prefer to be armed, and am 99% of the time I'm not at work. But if I have a drink when I'm out, it's because I am unarmed and not driving anytime soon. I feel a whole lot better about myself now, than I did in my younger, more stupid years... I shouldn't be alive, but since I am and fully realize that... I want to stay this way!
-
Once again, Neil has hit the nail on the head... I agree. For one, I'm alot more upset about the insane inflation of ammunition prices recently than the few extra dollars a week it takes to keep 3 gas tanks full...
-
All of the kydex and polymer holsters which I have seen or tried would fit any XD. Leather is a different beast, simply because of a tighter fit to the frame and minor length differences, but even some leather holsters are interchangeable between standard and .45-frame XDs.

Maybe there is a way to make the 'Trading Post' items show up separately from the new posts in the main forums? I think there is some benefit to having an area where various items can be posted... but do concede that if this site were to eventually become flooded with e-bay'esque classifieds, it would detract from the overall appearance of the organization. That's a tough one... perhaps there needs to be a separate mechanism for posting items for sale, other than a forum thread, which cannot be replied to other than by PM or updated by the seller? I don't know how complicated this site should choose to become. But I agree that in its present state, mass ads could potentially become unreasonable to wade through and view. I don't think that it's anywhere near there yet. Perhaps Trading Post items should have a time limit, after which the thread will expire and automatically be deleted? Allow the seller to choose between several reasonable time intervals, such as 1 week, 2 weeks, or a month... I have no problem with the current state of the trading post... just some speculation. Never gave it any thought before this thread.

har-har-har... Glad those Glock cartridges got there without having an AD. Hope they suit your needs... The doomsday device is coming via freight, they said it wouldn't fit in a postal jeep ... be looking for it in a few more days. You have plenty of lead shielding, right?

IDPA shooters... what is your handgun?
molonlabetn replied to TGO David's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
I used to regularly carry a 5" XD IWB... it really wasn't bad at all. -
I know, I know... I swear that I fondle every DW 10mm that Dan & Joe have up there every time I visit. I just keep having things come up... And we're cranking away at paying off my wife's car and my student loan, so, by Jan/Feb '08, I figure, I'll have freed up a significant amount of the budget, being debt-free 'cept for the house. As it is now, I'd rather use my portion of my spending money to shoot the guns I do have, and primarily to stock up on essentials (in leiu of any ban), than buy a bunch of guns that I wouldn't be able to afford to shoot.
