  1. Thank you guys for coming out. I cant believe we split the eye on that hawk, but such is life. Next time we will upset the steel into a 3/4" - 1" egg shape so we have a bigger area to pull the eye from. Im glad you guys had fun, the knife turned out great. That hammer will sure out the blister on until your used to it. Ive done enough I dont blister up anymore but my forearms will be sore from that 4 lb shop hammer on that hawk head lol. We will get together again soon.
  2. Pretty good. Broomhead nad his da were the only two. They made a knife together, and me and my old man made a squirell fork, fire striker, and a throwing hawk. Pics to come
  3. The said day was today lol. Sorry ya missed it, itll come around again
  4. I forgot the second pad thing. I use the second pad naturally all the time now, and yes it does help. I have smaller sized hands.
  5. Follow through baby. Slow steady squeeze to the rear, when the shot bteaks keep the trigger pulled and sights on the target, then just as slowly release the trigger till you get the chunk of it resetting. I was a range coach for the USMC in Okinawa, and spent a lot of time working on my trigger control. Once you can do it perfect 100% of the time slow as molasses, start bumping up the speed.
  6. I guess I'm a lil old school Sharps 1874 "Quigely" in .45-110
  7. I talked to my old man tonight. Hes thinking october time frame to give it time to cool off. Thanks for all the intrest guys Ill keep ya posted.
  8. I like that idea dave, but percussion seems so much more reliable for hunting and bad weather
  9. Im thinking about 10 people. We have some spikes and leaf springs to work with.
  10. Just looked at dixie and they have exactly what I wanted. Thanks guys
  11. Im looking for a Hawken style percussion rifle kit. Can anyone suggest any places online that have the best deals? Im not particular about it being percussion or flintlock but Id prefer a percussion style rifle. Caliber can be. 50 or. 54. Let me know and share some links. Thanks guys.
  12. East Tn near Oliver Springs. Any help, skilled or otherwise would be appreciated. Itll be this fall when it cools off not while its a 100+ degrees constantly. Dad has to much farm work when its summer time
  13. I was wondering how you made those tight fringes. Ill carry it through my nelt the the way you do, i just wanted a flap fpr extra security. The buckskin wang idea is a good one, or i may just leave it as is. Im gonna be making a striker and finding some flint in the next couple of weekends.
  14. So I put the first piece of buckskin that Dave gave me to work. I cut and sewed a strike a light bag for flint, steel, char cloth, and tinder. I sew it inside out then flipped the stitches in, with a flap cover. Not sure how to secure the flap yet, probably an antler or bone button of some sort. Anyways, let me know what you guys think.
  15. Hey don Im up for a true primtive weekend soon, though I would prefer the heat to die down some. But really soon we'll plan us up a primtive walk about.
  16. Dave, theres no way Id exoect you to make that drive more than ever six months lol. Id love it if you could make events / camp outs/ rendevouzs on a 3-4 month basis. One thing about hosting there, we have 72k acres of woodlands behind us, 35-40 acres pvt owned, a full blacksmith shop, and all kinds of primitive living tools and equipment on the property already.
  17. I was at work, and pumping concrete so short on time. Now that I have more time, the hide I'm tanning was a prepared deer hide from WD-40, He also brought the pig brains, and showed me how to treat the hide, and work it for the perfect hide. Thanks Dave
  18. Now his proposal. Since the Primitive survival class, Dave and Don, really caught dads attention. He has since offered his land for the next class, including hunting privileges. But, he wanted to know if some people would be interested in pitching in time and sweat to build a backwoods style cabin for these events. He is intrested in hosting one every 3-4 months, and has land to build on, and will provide the logs for the cabin, and most raw materials. We just need help putting it together, and need to know that theres even an interest in doing these kinds of events on a regular basis. Let us know if your interested in helping, and in continuing the Primitive events. Thanks guys

Old cabin cooking and heating stove Papaws wine press, various tools hung behind Horse logging equipment Plow shares Wash tub that dad used until his teens Another storage shed Broad axes and foot azes Cane hooks Old crosscut, and logging tongs
  21. Im using pig brains from the grocery store.
  22. He was using the twine for tinder, not charring it. I like the sisal rope birds nest tender.
  23. Its going very well. I give it ten to fifteen minutes in the morning, and the same at night, storing it rolled up in a bag in my basement the rest of the time. Definetly wanna try a full start to finish hide now. This will be the slowest dried, most worked hide every lol. Ive been working the hell out of it, and keeping it dark and wrapped tight to keep it from drying fast.
  24. Dads already said we can squirrel hunt on his place this fall. Goody goody
