2014 Off Season Support Group Deer Season Thread

I had some in a mix one year and the turkeys absolutely loved it! So much in fact that they didn't wait for it to sprout, just went ahead and polished it all off as seed! I will say though, the area that this happened to me had the strongest turkey population of anywhere that I've ever seen in person or on tv. I've seen 200 or better at one time in the field across from the property I had hunting rights on so that problem may be more limited to that particular spot. If I remember correctly the only two things that they let sprout was the rape and kale. I slipped in there about an hour before light one morning and they must have been roosted all around me because I counted 87 that came out of the trees and landed as close as 2-3' from me and as far out as 30yds (the plot was in a clearing I cut in the woods and was only about 35-40yds across) Never seen anything like it anywhere else. Batman, have you planted this mix before minus the buckwheat? I intend on putting 7-8 plots in for next season if time allows and would like to try a few different mixs as an experiment. -

Glad to hear he's doing well and hopefully he won't need the surgery. I had a whole mess of staples around my left leg at the the knee when I pretty much had my leg torn off and had a handful in the other knee as well. I'd much rather have stitches because the staples are so rigid that they seems to always be trying to rip you open more, not to mention I've always taken out my own stitches and saved myself a trip to the doc but the staples aren't quite that easy ;) . Joe is exactly right, i'll take 1 calm guy that doesn't know everything, standing back over 3 knowledgeable folks that are layin' on the panic button all up in the way. That person always ends up being valuable, especially when out in the field or woods because someone needs to be able to communicate rationally over the phone whether it be with family members or a dispatcher and also be making the plans to get the person moved and write down anything that comes up. I crunched my right akle up bad enough that it wouldn't even keep my foot in place and the other two guys that were with me were so paniced that I ended up having to be the rational one as well as the injured. I made the call to line up a driver the the ER as well as rigged up something to keep my foot in place so I could get on the bike and ride back to the road. That was a fancy thing I rigged up too, It consisted of part of a atv gun rack, 2 bungee straps and a piece of an old 2x4 that happened to be laying on the creek bank. My point is, having the ability to stay calm and logical is often times more important than anything else. Let us know how the Dr. appointment goes tomorrow. -

You might try some rape and kale in your mix. I've had great results in this area in the past and will probably be a part of my fall mix. An old friend of mine's dad used to lean heavy on wheat and oats and did decent with it as well. I'm not sure whether it was just timing and conditions or if it had something to do with the rape and kale but the 3 places that I used it for a couple years the deer seemed to stay on a very strict schedule with it. I mean at all three plots (on 2 different properties) they would be there in the same 1 1/2 hour window everyday with the exception of very poor weather conditions. Like I said it could have just been coincidence but none of the other 4 plots netted the same result and that was the only difference. -

Sounds good. Let's just touch base later in the week and we'll see what we can figure out. -
Annnnnnd now i'm second guessing hitting the woods in search of hogs with you Dave! ;) Just kidding, it actually sounds like a good time so long as everyone is well prepared and equipped.

Be glad to have you. It doesn't seem to work out to well on here when things get planned way far in advance (gives to much time to come up with flakey excuses) but maybe sometime in March I will start trying to work out the logistics. -

I could quite possibly be up for making a few this weekend if you're up for it. My wife going to be out of town all weekend so I won't be working around any other plans. -
I see. Figured there was something I was missing there. I'd hate to know if paid good money and couldn't stand to eat the meat. Down in FL where we took one a week ago the landowner or one of his sons took a huge boar before we got there. He stunk so bad that they drug him off into the swamp and left him there for the coyotes and buzzards. Dave I'm gonna send you a pm about curing the bacon we saved.

How do they get around the law in order to charge folks to hunt them? Is it fenced in?
-
There are some around the Sparta area so I would assume one might could find them around Crossville as well. Problem is than you pretty much have to know a landowner that has them on his/her property to legally kill hogs in TN. You would have to know them well enough that they would set you up on a list with the TWRA because they are no longer considered a "game" species here. As people began to see the chance to make money selling hog hunts they started trapping them and moving them to their own property so that they could charge folks to hunt them. TWRA's answer to this was to make it illegal to "hunt" them in order to demagnetize the trapping and relocation on them but I guess they totally missed the fact that they are already here and reproduce quicker than any rabbit on the planet so they have basically guaranteed everyone in the state, that with some patience they to will have their property over run with the destructive beast. Should have just offered a reward to anyone that had been charged or had someone attempt to charge them to hunt hogs for turning that person in. But there again, who am I to know.

Man I sure hate your weekend turned out that way. I used to race motocross and before that, growing up there were always 4 wheelers and dirt bikes around and a lot of the times we were doing stupid things on/with them and there's not a one of us that shouldn't have been dead any less than a dozen times by the age 18. God seems to take pity on the ignorant (not meant negatively) because at that point we never worried about more than a broken arm or ankle but looking back we should have been worried about "death or even worse" (my childhood best friends grandmothers saying) yet none of us ended up with anything very permanent. I'm glad for everyone involved that it turned out no worse than it did because having had friends and personally been in critical shape in ICU I know it can be mentally taxing on everyone but especially the person in your position Slappy. Down be to hard on yourself and while take some safety precautions is always a good thing, you can't bubble wrap everyone and save them from themselves not to mention it can take the fun out of things if taken to far. Sounds like you have a good friend and have no need to be worried about any sort of legal recourse so that's a blessing in itself. As for med. training, it never hurts to learn but could definitely hurt not to. I have some knowledge (way more than your average joe you pass by in the grocery store) but have been telling myself I need to get more. I've been building a very extensive kit that includes items related to trauma and the further I get into the trauma items the more I realize how little I know so it's about time. Maybe that's something we should try to put together regionally, like choosing someone well versed in first aid and trauma procedures and having anyone interested here to meet up out on one of our properties for some informal training and maybe some shooting or camping afterwards. Might be something to try and plan as we get closer towards the spring time. Slappy I think you're the only one regularly involved with this particular group that doesn't live reasonably close so if we can get something like this put together around here you'd be more than welcome to crash in our spare bedroom if you wanted to make the drive. Just something for all of us to think about. -
Well i'm basing my opinion on their saying that they will not completely relocate. There are plenty of other states that would be a better environment for their business and I'd like to think that if I were the owner, i'd be on the first thing smokin headed somewhere south. Now like you said, it wouldn't be wise to show all their cards before they were ready to act which is why I wanted to reserve my right to change tunes if they went ahead and withdrew completely from MD when the time was right. I can think of few reasons to stay put and many to get packing.

:) I didn't take note of it's surroundings because what little alertness I had was used up on the burning building. BTW I wasn't driving at that point so no worries about me causing an accident. They can do some really neat stuff with those old building if they have enough capitol to get through the renovation. The apartment that we just moved my sister into in NYC wouldn't fetch $150 per month here in Murfreesboro but she was tickled to death to have it at $1,250 per month up there. It was an old building much like the burning one but lack a lot of the renovation that the nice ones you spoke about being in the area. It was 400sq' of filth when we got there but after almost a full day with a rough stiff bristled scrubbing and then mopping up whatever the brush broke up along with some paint, she was livable.

First off I'm excited to have another firearms manufacturer in the area... but I'm having trouble getting excited about the "way to go Beretta, way to show them what happens when they pass unconstitutional laws" thing. If they were relocating because they didn't want their business supporting a state that would inact such legislation, they would have moved the whole company, lock , stock and barrel. But they didn't, they are only moving what they are forced to by the law while leaving the rest there to comply with the BS legislation and continue to find such shenanigans. This is just my opinion and I'd like to reserve the right to be excited if one day if they should decide to go ahead and commit to phase themselves out of MD.

I agree 100%. There are TONS of very expensive very high end apt./condo/loft etc.... all around this country that were renovated and remodeled industrial buildings. Anything contemporary draws the bigs bucks if in the right area.

They are moving two lines here, one is their "tactical" line and I have forgotten what the other is going to be. EDIT Gallatin will be the home of Beretta's "sporting" and "tactical" lines as well as the research & development for the lines. I'll add the link below, sorry if it's the same that's been posted elsewhere. Been out of pocket for a bit. http://www.tennessean.com/article/20140129/BUSINESS/301290171/Gun-company-Beretta-bringing-300-jobs-Gallatin

Low flash point brick? ;) if it looked like that before i'm anxious to see what you think after this morning.

Well i'm not sure how gutted they were or were not but it was putting off a heck of a lot of flame.

Well Garufa said this wasn't its first time burning so surely two burnings will bring out the heavy equipment.
