  1.   Well, before we all get all warm and fuzzy about Gaston, you might want to actually look at JMB Hi-Power design. You see the Hi-power that we know is not the Hi-power that John designed at all. Colt still held the 1911 patents when John started the Hi-Power, and had to design a completely new gun. Right after john submitted the new gun for the patent (1923), he died (1926). FN gave the project over to the designer of the magazine to be used in the gun, a fellow named Saive. In 1926 the 1911 patents expired and Saive incorporated a great deal from the 1911. So, while the Hi-Power has John written all over it, we really can't consider it "his" design.   John's Hi-Power was striker fired, had a locked breech face, and the barrel came in and out of battery in a way that glock owners will recognize immediately.   We all stand on the shoulders of giants, its just that so many gun designers stand on John's. ;-)   Check it out: https://www.google.com/patents/US1618510?dq=john+m+browning+patents&hl=en&sa=X&ei=u5M5U6_IGuGlsATulIHYBA&ved=0CGYQ6AEwBzgK
  2.   Yep. If I were asked to suggest a handgun for a department or agency, I would not suggest the 1911 for two reasons. 1. As said here, too many officers only touch their guns during qualification and a thumb safety would probably get them killed. 2. I simply do not trust most factory built 1911 to be in spec nor do I trust department armorers to know nearly enough to address things. And I've fixed more than my share of issues when the particular gun has been back to the factory several times. So, I don't even trust the manufacturer often.   I feel the majority of 1911s come out fine, but too often I'm working on guns where I'm wondering how this gun ever left the factory. You can't blame the platform for someone building them wrong. This is where glock and S&W have an advantage. While there are tons of companies building 1911's, glock and S&W are the only ones building their guns. Plus those guns were designed with modern manufacturing in mind. The 1911 requires skilled hands, and most factories seem to trust their CNC to compensate for the lack of man hours.
  3. I can't be there because like Chandler I'll be in AL.   A little friendly advise for those who care to hear. Shoot the classifiers in complete control and I believe your classification will be close to reality. I made a point to do that as I went from C to B etc… and I always felt I could be in contention of at least a 1-3 class placement at major matches.   I agree with most everything Aaron said, but as someone who is fat and woefully out of shape, fitness can and will absolutely help, but it's down on the list for me.  I've seen first hand extremely overweight and out of shape guys who will KICK YOUR A%#!!! That being said, getting in better shape is still on my list of things to do. LOL :-\
  4. I certainly was not saying that you don't need to change springs. I was just sharing something that I thought was pretty amazing. Was not implying anyone should not replace springs.   I tell my customers and everyone else when the subject comes up to replace all springs and give them intervals. I personally replace all mag springs once a year right after the New Year. Springs are cheap and it's just good cheap insurance.
  5. Uncles WW2 1911 that he brought back from Europe. He kept the mags loaded since the war in his gun cabinet. Every time he shot the gun it ran just fine.  It was in the early 90's the last time he brought it out to shoot some holes in a trash burn barrel. He passed years ago, and my cousin now has the gun, but I suspect that the mags are still loaded and will run just fine.
  6.   ??? Must be another Tim. I left after the first stage took 2+  hours to shoot.
  7.   Well, the shotgun and I are now on speaking terms….we'll see if I can take it to an even better place.  Yep I signed up in the pro.  ;)  More shooting, longer shots = Better.
  8. I have the 1903 and 1908 in .380. Love them!!! Another amazing design by JMB.   I really enjoy carrying them both!!
  9. Bead blasting will not help to protect the steel at all. In fact quite the opposite.
  10.   Well, I think a buddy of mine put it best…..   "It makes no sense to take a low capacity weapon into a target rich environment." I added: Particularly when it takes 4-6 times longer to reload than say a pistol.    I am trying to make friends with the scatter gun however………. :pleased:
  11. I would never buy or trust a gun that was built by someone on dope.  :)
  12. This was my first 3 gun match.   Really enjoyed it!!!!   Thanks so much for the great match…..I'm hooked.   Shotguns SUCK!!!!!   Need to remember to hold high on close head shot AR targets….dang it…...   Shotguns SUCK!!!!   That is all.
  13. So, she browned them in a cast iron skillet and then baked them for 2 hours in an amazing sauce. Wonderful meal Oh and the side is butternut squash with onions!!!!
  14. Not really sure of the actual jam. If you take a pic of the jam and post it, that would be very helpful. Where is the round when it stops? Has it started in the barrel? Has the rim of the case made contact with the extractor? Without knowing more, it's really hard to narrow things down.   As long as you have sufficient lube on the gun, a gun that is broken in should go hundreds and hundreds of rounds without needing more lube or cleaning.
  15.     My wife has a plan, so I'll take a pic and let you know exactly how she did them. Probably have them tomorrow. I'm hoping she does the same as she did with the pheasants we got earlier this year when on a trip to PA.
  16.   I've seen more wild coveys this year than I have in the last 15. Very encouraging.   Yeah, I use to hear them all the time when I was a kid, they seemed to be everywhere then.
  17. Fantastic day today!!! How many birds can a gunsmith, gun builder and 13 year old kill? 28 evidently. LOL
  18. What is this Run and Gun you talk about????? That sounds very dangerous!!!! I was told not to run with scissors………Y'all are crazy!!!
  19. I know, I talked to Jason last night and he said about it too. I just don't have the gear quite together yet. I might take him up on the offer of using some of his and stay the night there.
