  1. I'm no coyote hunting expert by any stretch of the imagination. But, I do know a few things about Tennessee game. Back in the 60s -70s there was plenty of quail to hunt in almost everyone's field. Now, the quail population is sparse... very sparse. I can't prove it, but I think two things mainly contributed to the demise of our quail population, coyotes and house cats. Outdoor house cats will do a number on quail, as will the coyotes. Seems the coyotes go against everything the hunters want to see get better.
  2. Too bad you didn't nail that rascal. Hopefully, you'll get a perfect hit next time. Did you see any blood, or do you think it was a complete miss? It might possibly have been a male after one of your females, if you have one in heat. I've also heard of female yotes, in heat, luring male dogs out to where the pack could have a feast on them. But, I think it's the wrong time of the year for female coyotes to be in heat. I'm thinking they just went through the pup nursing thing a few months back. If that's wrong, someone with the correct info can chime in and give us accurate information. Glad they didn't get one of your dogs. I saw one trying to cross I-24 near Murfreesboro Friday afternoon around 6 PM. Throw all of the bums out in November! It'll be good for the country, and let them know "we the people" are still in power, and in charge!
  3. Congratulations WD. Thanks for all your service to our country. Just wish about 85% of those on welfare had your dedication to this great country. Enjoy your retirement... you earned it! 4. Congrats! That's a fine looking weapon.
  5. Anybody got any reports on the Murfreesboro Gun Show from today?
  6. 101, I agree, the ticks and chiggers... and mosquitoes are the worse I can ever remember, at least here in the Middle Tennessee area. It may have something to do with less cotton production, therefore fewer insecticide chemicals to keep them thinned down. I wish I knew a good old time remedy potion to put on my clothes, maybe around my socks or pants legs, that would repel the ticks and chiggers right from the start. Anybody got any of these to share with the rest of us? I've heard that kerosene works for bank fishing and berry picking, but the game would probably smell it a long way off!
  7. Conrad, sorry the shot just didn't go where you wanted it to. Don't feel too bad, we've all done that at one time or another. What call and what calls were you using to get him in that close? Were you using a ground blind, or just full camo? Hope you get him next time... and remember, we want to see pictures! "To anger a Conservative, lie to him. To anger a Liberal, tell him the truth." 8. Thanks for the information guys. I'm still recovering from the last round with the ticks and chiggers. I'll probably get back out there this next week and see if I can do any good.
  9. 101, it makes us Middle Tennessee hunters envious of the hunters out west that just backs up to a tree, in the shade, and picks them off as they're called out. The place I go is so grown up with greenery, from all of this rain, that I can't see more than 30 to 40 yards through the woods. How do you do a stand setup... just full camo, or do you use any sort of blinds? What do you use for mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers, that the yotes can't smell?
  10. Excellent idea! Thanks 101.
  11. Sorry, this is off thread, but is that AD® or AD(J) Buck1032?
  12. You're exactly right on the ThermaCell, Bearman. Once I got my blind "Magnum Hunter" up, I got inside and fired up the ThermaCell... no more mosquitoes. But, they liked to have eaten me up before I could get that done! I was just wondering if the yotes could smell the ThermaCell... cause I called in an area where I know there are coyotes, and didn't see a one. Any good brand names you have used that did a good job of repelling the ticks and chiggers? I've heard kerosene works around the socks, but it has quite a scent that would probably spook the yotes.
  13. What do you coyote hunters use to repel the Mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers, that don't spook the yotes? They're all pretty rough right now, here in Middle Tennessee. Thanks.
  14. Hunting 101, I used some of those sounds, along with a "Screaming Gray Fox" which got the crows all in a tissy! Are they out and about during the day now, or are they laid up in the den? I've seen their den, but am not sure which way water is from there. Also, even though it's a strip of woods, there's housed all around there. I heard all kinds of dogs barking, so they're probably feasting on them and the abundance of rabbits in the area. Also, I have to be very careful of what direction I can shoot in. So, it's touchy, but it's still coyote hunting!
  15. Hey 101, I don't know anything about making the decoys, but I find out this afternoon what will bring them in droves. While on a coyote stand, inside the tree line, I hit the "Screaming Gray Fox" on my FoxPro electronic call, and they were diving down through the trees! I let them leave and did it three times, just to make sure I was seeing it right. Within no time, after I hit the call, here they all came back ready to rumble! They were upset! Just info I thought I'd pass along.
  16. Anyone having any luck with calling the "yotes" out and bagging them? I tried hunting from a blind this afternoon, to keep from getting carried off by the mosquitoes! I'm using a FoxPro and a MoJo Critter, but did not see one coyote. Today, I set up inside the edge of the woods. With all the rain, the vegetation is real thick, so it's hard to get a shooting lane of any decent length. Anyone ever used a mosquito repellent, like "ThermaCell" on a coyote stand? I used it and Cutter, as the mosquitoes were swarming! Any special products that will keep the mosquitoes off, and won't spook the yotes? Whew! I'm still scratching!
  17. Thanks Mad Squirrel, I think I will repair it myself. Actually, there are repair kits available out there. There is someone even selling them on eBay! Pyramid Air also sells them, as does a couple of other places. There's just a couple of special tools to buy, which actually comes with the kit on eBay. Thanks for the help though. I'll let all of you know how it shoots after I finish the repair.
  18. You may just have something there 101. Get all set up ahead of time, let things settle down for a while, and then let him bring the dogs out. But, I'd have to use careful planning for the shooting lane. Don't want to get in the direction of him or the dogs. Would take some planning and careful set up, but should be doable. Thanks.
  19. Test fired the new bolt Bushmaster sent me this afternoon, and it shoots, extracts, and ejects, just like it's supposed to do. There are no scratches, dents, or marks on the head stamp of the fired shell casing. And, the good thing is that Bushmaster stood up to their warranty, and didn't charge me a dime! They even sent me a prepaid postage label to send the defective bolt back to them! Kudos to Bushmaster! "To anger a Conservative, lie to him. To anger a Liberal, tell him the truth". Theodore Roosevelt
  20. No, the extractor seems to be doing it's job... it's pulling the spent cartridge fine, and the ejector is kicking it out in about the right distance and clock position. I just got a brand new bolt from Bushmaster yesterday. I've pulled the defective bolt, and installed the new one. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but will post the results when I do. Thanks to everyone that responded. This is a great site to share knowledge about firearms on. Thanks again.
  21. The land owner and his wife takes their dogs out of the kennels, he has lots of hunting dogs, and lets them run in the late afternoon, as they walk along with them. He said he's had to run ahead of the dog and whistle loudly to scare off the coyote! I know what you're thinking... why don't he just take a gun, because he is a hunter and has guns, and just shoot the coyote when he tries to attack the dogs. He says if he has his gun the coyote will not come out... but if he doesn't have a gun, the coyote is pretty bold! I'm interested in techniques you coyote hunters would use to get the drop on these coyotes, and rid the landowner of the threat to his dogs. Thanks again.
  22. How many years have you had your Silver Streak, Wareagle? Do you know what the difference is between the Silver Streak and the Blue Streak? Internally, aren't they pretty much the same gun? I was hoping there was someone that could direct me to a website with the repair instructions and parts breakdown for my Blue Streak...still hoping... and looking.
  23. Went on my first coyote hunt yesterday. Did not see one, but the landowner showed me their den. It's a big den in a wash out, under tree roots and rocks. We stood on top of it, so we may have spooked them for yesterday. For you experienced coyote hunters, what is the best approach... make a stand close to the den, or set up away from the den and try to call? They almost killed one of the landowners beagles, so he wants them DRT. Thanks.
  24. Bump Sure hope someone chimes in with the step by step instructions on how to disassemble, install repair kit, and reassemble the Sheridan Blue Streak. Love to hear from someone that has done this repair. Thanks.
  25. Never heard of spring squirrel season before! I'll have to check it out. Is that something new this year? My grandmother used to cook them in a black iron skillet, on the top of the stove, just like southern fried chicken... very good on a cold winter day. She also made dumplings with them in it, just like chicken and dumplings... also good.
