  1. Quail don't usually have regular runs. They will hold until you practically step on them, then they explode in such a manner, that even though you know they are there, it startles you for a couple of seconds. By that time, they have busted in every direction known to man. Now, you put the bird-dogs to work working the singles. They will whistle to each other to regroup, if left alone. To me, to hunt "wild" quail...as opposed to pen raised quail, is as exciting as any other hunting I have done. I hope you're right about the fire ants, as they have devastated the quail population in some of the southern states.
  2. Bersaguy, how were the pheasant prepared for eating?
  3. Oh yeah, seez52, quail are my favorite southern fried fowl. I haven't had pheasant, so I can't comment on them. We didn't have any where I grew up in northeast Louisiana. Are pheasant put in dressing like chicken, fried or boiled?
  4. Sorry Ronald_55, that's an internet pic. Wish I could claim them as my own.
  5. We're coming up on fishing... and snake season. What are some effective snake shot rounds you've loaded for the 38 Special, without using the plastic capsules? I like the complete "roll your own" loads. Some say the larger size bird shot penetrate better and others say the smaller #12 shot effects more of the nervous system and there's no wriggling after the shot. I've also seen some vids that seem to suggest a shorter barrel patterns better than a longer barrel. Anybody got any experience with their loads in the field...or on the river bank?
  6. Thanks for your reply, Mike. Actually, I was shooting only one kind of ammo. The front sight would only screw down so far, before extreme binding. There's an open hole below it, so I don't understand why it can't be screwed down lower. I had actually thought about filing some off of the top, but did not want to modify the front sight post. I just thought that maybe others had had the same problem.
  7. I have a Romanian "Romy G" AK-47 that I'm trying to lower the front post sight down. Problem is, after it's screwed down some... not enough... it gets real hard and impossible to screw down any more. We've checked the threads and there's plenty of room for it to be lowered below. There's still a lot of threads above the sight block it screws down into. The lower part of the post is split (in the threaded area) presumably, so the sight can be adjusted with a hot barrel. It feels like it is bottoming out on a cold barrel and cold front sight post. It's obvious it should go down much lower. The gun is shooting low...on the lowest setting of the rear sight. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
  8. This is beyond my capabilities, for sure. I've been procrastinating on driving the rivets in my Romy "G" AK-47 project!
  9. jgradyc, my main concern was that the animal may have Rabies. Even a rabid skunk will attack, I'm told. Thankfully, I not speaking from experience as I've never encountered one. Hope I never do.
  10. MacGyver, are you saying convert a 760 from a 308 pump action to a .22 Hornet pump action?
  11. Be very careful of any coyotes that act like they're not afraid of you! Coyotes, by nature, usually light the afterburner and get the heck out of Dodge at the first scent of a human. You need to check with the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency about any wild animal that is not afraid of humans and for your own safety, keep your distance. They can advise you about the correct procedure to dispatch them with your bow.
  12. Thanks for the information. The 760/7600 model pump would probably have been a hot seller in .22 Hornet.
  13. Sure wish there was someone around the Murfreesboro area with the rivet tools, that would help me finish up my Romanian Romy "G" build. I know, some have said just get a hammer and smash the rivets. I'm old school and was taught to do something right, or don't do it at all. I'm not unfamiliar to riveting, as I used to teach aircraft mechanics aircraft riveting, years ago. But this is a little different...getting the bucktail formed so the barrel will clear it, and having the external head look like a factory build. Yeah, I know, I'm picky about the way it looks when finished. We're all gun folks here...what's the first thing we consider when about to purchase a gun??? We want to know how it looks! Am I right or wrong? So, not only do I want my AK build to function and shoot well, I want it to look good to... and that takes the right tool for the job. Anyone got the right tools...I can rent, or possibly buy? Also willing to pay someone that "knows what they're doing" to help me get the rivets in my receiver driven. Actually, the ones I'm most concerned about are the 6 on the forward trunnion. It's a NDS 3 receiver.
  14. Hi guys... here's a question for all of the firearms experts. Did anyone ever manufacture a .22 Hornet in a pump action rifle? If so, who, when, and can you give any details? Pics would even be better. Thanks.
  15. I need help finding a set of choke tubes that will fit a 16 gauge Remington 1100. I prefer RemChokes, but would consider other brands, as long as they fit flush with the end of the barrel. I've heard that 16 gauge tubes for a Remington 870 will fit. Any information to a source would be greatly appreciated.
  16. Yeah, tnhawk, this is a huge problem with Rossi... one that they won't admit to and just keep putting people off. Don't think I'll ever buy another Rossi either. At least I didn't send them my gun! Worse case, I'll have to repair or replace my buttstock out of my pocket. I feel sorry for those that have sent them their guns.
  17. Sorry, I can't remember if I answered this or not. I was contracted to appraise all the airplanes of a Tennessee university some time back and have been under pressure ever since. I go back to Winnsboro when I can. I still have cousins that live there. My graduating class would have been 1959. I'm an old guy! We were the "Winnsboro Wildcats" when I went to WHS. I always ask if folks from Winnsboro have any pics of the area on their computer. If you do, I'll give you my email address.
  18. Climber I made a post about hunting around Big lake, Hog Lake, and close to the Tensas WMR, but don't see it.
  19. I haven't been to Monroe in many years. My best friend, Tommy Earl, (RIP) used to live over there and a first cousin lived there also. The last time I was there, I met a first cousin at the Pecan Land Mall. I think that was the name of it. I also have a first cousin that works at the Dodge dealership there.
  20. Born and raised in Franklin Parish, Winnsboro. I don't get to go back home too often. Most of my old childhood hunting grounds are now plowed fields with row crops... no woods. We didn't have a lot of deer, back when I was a teen hunting, but had plenty rabbits, quail, ducks, and squirrel. Most of my deer hunting was over around Big Lake and Hog Lake.
  21. Glad you put his deer chasing...and probably deer killing... days to an end. I was raised hunting in the woods in North East Louisiana and never saw a coyote...except on TV back then. They have wiped out the rabbits where I live in Tennessee. I haven't seen one cross the road at night in years. What part of Louisiana did you hunt in?
  22. I appreciate your suggestion, but I want Rossi to replace a faulty product they sold. There have been some pretty bad shattering/splintering of these butt-stocks as witnessed by Face Book postings. Maybe it will take someone loosing an eye before they will accept responsibility for a faulty product. I don't want to see them sued out of business by some slip and fall lawyer. I don't want any money... all I want is a safe gun that I can use. But... if after all I've been through for over two years, just to get a $75 faulty butt-stock, and my Rossi Circuit Judge butt-stock shattered and took my eye out, I'd sue them for every cent they had. Somewhere out there, it's going to happen, if they don't replace these faulty...unsafe... butt-stocks, if it hasn't already. Mine isn't the only one, there's lots of them. Just check out the gun forums. They're telling me that they are "looking" for another company to build their stocks... but, I have been getting that same script for over a year now! As far as sending them my gun...no way. When I'm lied to once, trust has been broken and the party that lies to me has no credibility. Rossi has no integrity as far as I'm concerned and I believe a lot of other people feel the same way. A company like Boyd's Stocks could have made replacement stocks long ago. Maybe they should go back and review a little history on the Ford "Pinto" and it's exploding rear gas tanks. I would challenge anyone to look at the shattered stock pictures and tell me if you'd want to fire a Rossi Circuit Judge with that happening within an inch or so of your eye. Rossi has a responsibility to it's customers ( and a liability also) to sell them a safe product. Words come easy for them to make verbal promises, but check out the rest of the Circuit Judge owners that are either waiting for replacement stocks of a replacement gun, after sending theirs in over two years ago. Rossi doesn't deserve my business, nor anyone else's.
  23. I'm no spring chicken, so maybe they should get on it before too long!
  24. I may have to go that way... was hoping for Rem-Choke tubes. Thanks for the info.
