  1. I thought I'd start a thread for people to post questions that don't really require an answer, more of just observations about life. I got started thinking about this topic tonight while going to the gym. So here goes... Makes me wonder why people will drive around the Gym parking lot several times trying to get a close spot, instead of parking in the first one you find and actually WALK a little bit. It's the gym people!
  2. If you call or email them, and you don't live in their district, do they just blow you off, or do they actually listen?
  3. I tend to agree with Rabbi here. I think different things happen at different ages. I have a 19 year old that I wouldn't feel comfortable with carrying a handgun. Not that he isn't safe or doesn't know the rules of gun safety, we go shooting all the time together. But he is impulsive and would have the possibility of pulling his gun in the heat of an argument, or something along those lines. He lives on his own so that he can live by his rules. Fair enough, he's 19 and supports himself and pretty responsible overall. However, he drinks, and sometimes to excess. I guess he comes by that naturally, I did at his age (when it was legal at 18 by the way). I think a few more years may help with the maturity level and help avoid this behavior, and possibly some problems. Not to say that 21 year olds won't drink to excess, many do, but maybe the extra age helps with some young people. But starting when you're 18 and imature and impulsive and thinking that you'll live forever, will just start a bad pattern, early. Now, he is a smart kid, has lots of social and political beliefs that he has actually put a lot of thought into. I believe that he can truely make an educated decision on who he will vote for, and not just follow the "Rock the Vote" crowd. I believe most 18 year old kids are capable of this too. So, just going by my highly unscientific, one person study, I think that its not unreasonable to have different ages for different activities. If the one age for everything is a valid point, why don't we say if you can drive a car at 16, you should be able to have a beer? Or you shouldn't be able to dive a car till you're 21? That sounds kind of silly really.
  4. Is it just my perspective, or did it look like he fired awfully close to the mom and her little girl? Scary situation!
  5. Hey, maybe he's a "trained professional" and is qualified to handle a gun in this manner. Or maybe he just wants to show how safe a gun really is. You know, guns don't kill people....
  6. OK that's funniest thing I've heard all week! Can I have your permission to use it?
  7. I looked at the picture again and thought that the safety lever was on the wrong side. So I went to the SA webs site to look at it. Appears it's an ambidextrous safety, or a lever on both sides, just like the mag release. Very nice for left handers. I'm personally not a big fan of the safety on this gun, but it may give some people an extra level of comfort. As long as it's an option, I say they've done a good job in the design, based on the picture.
  8. Personally, I disarm before going into church. The main reason for me doing so is that I don't want to have someone catch a peek at my gun or holster, ot the outline of it under my shirt. Then it takes their focus off of what they came for and onto my gun. Now that said, I'm not opposed to carrying in church, and one day when I find the perfect hoster that doesn't profile, I probably will.
  9. Strictly forbidden at my job, not even stored in the vehicle. In fact I've heard of folks that had gone hunting over the weekend and left a box of shells in the trunk, suddenly rememeber in the middle of the day that they were there and quietly ask if they could go home. Kind of sucks if you want to go somewhere after work. You have to go all the way home to load up.
  10. Is that going to be standard, or is it an option?
  11. I bought that exact model a few months ago. I have been loving it. Have fun taking it apart though. I recommend cleaning it through the ejection port until you just have to take it apart.
  12. The other cool thing I just found the other day is the "View first unread" link at the top of the page when you click on a thread. I bet that's been there a while too, but it is handy.
  13. Everyone, thanks a lot for your suggestions. Sounds like we will definitely be doing some dry fire drills this week. I like the snap cap idea too. I think that will show us her flinch. You folks are great!
  14. Phantom, she is probably going to take your class soon, and you teaching the NRA Basic Pistol with it is one reason. I have a question for you though. I took your class last November (remember the "night class"), and I thought I remeber you saying you allowed people to retake the class. When she comes, can I just sit in with her?
  15. Last year I got my wife to come to the range with me. I wanted her to know how to use the guns in the house. At that point she was ambivilent about guns. They were OK for me, but she didn't really care. Well after shooting through a magazine, she turned around with a big ol' grin and said could we look for a gun for her on the way out. She was hooked. She wanted a gun she could eventually carry, and is going to take the permit class in a few months. She thought my XD-9 was a bit too much for her to handle, so we tried a few other smaller caliber guns. She eventually decided that she liked the Bersa .380, so we got her one. She started off as expected, hitting some targets, missing others. However after several months, she has not really gotten better. We went to the range a few weeks ago, and she was so frustrated that she said she was going to quit. Shooting has become one thing that we really enjoy doing together, and one of the few hobbies that we share. I would just hate it if she stopped doing it. So here's the thing. She jerks the gun down, I mean way down, when she shoots. Probably two feet down from the bullseye at 10 yards out. I know she is anticipating the bang. I've told her that she needs to try and let the bang be a surprise. She says she doesn't know how to do that. I can't really explain it to her without frustrating her even more. I have a .22 Ruger pistol and she does kind of OK with that, but still jerks it some. I've thought about using just that pistol with her the next time we go out. See if we can work on the basics. Can anyone give me some tips on how to have better aim. I think she would benefit from re-learning all the basics too, like grip, stance, breathing, as well as anticipating the bang. Links to other sites that she could read on her own would be really great too. Thanks in advance
  16. I'm facinated by these guns and would love to have one in my collection. There is a lot I don't understand about them though. I somehow seemed to deduce that you can't just go and buy a new one, you have to build it? Is that true? Also, it looks like there are tons of parts on the Internet for them and it seems confusing. There are uppers, lowers, stripped lowers, springs, thingamabobs, doo-hickeys, etc. Some can be bought directly, some have to be FFL. It also seems that you can spend about as much on one as your bank account can feed it. What would be a good starting price for a very basic model that could be added on to later? Can somebody make it simple for me?
  17. Just a few days ago I discovered that if you double-click the round, three hole icon next to the forum name, it will mark that forum read. I'm like you, there are a few forums I don't read, so I just mark them read, then click the new posts link. Cuts my reading down a few pages.
  18. I've got the 22/45 with the 5-1/2" barrel. I love it! It's really accurate, and the ammo is waaay cheaper than anything else you can shoot. I bring it along anytime I go to the range. It makes my range time a lot longer. We usually take turns alternating between the bigger guns and this .22. However, it is a beast to take apart. I heard horror stories about how difficult it was. I thought to myself, I'm a reasonably smart guy, I can read and follow the directions. Well either I'm not as smart as I thought (very likely) or the instructions are very difficult to follow. They go something like pull cation back, remove magazine, Pull lever, pull triger, insert magazine, pull trigger, remove magazine, turn screw, insert magazine, puull lever, remove magazine, pull action, remove doohickey, insert magazine, and on and on and on. I couldn't remember where I was in the instructions. From now on, I'm going to clean as much as I can through the ejection port and end of barrel. I'll take it apart once a year or so for a thorough cleaning.
  19. Musicman, do most homeowner's policies cover damage that may be done to your neighbor's property during a shooting. For instance, say an intruder breaks into my home, I pop off a few rounds, and one goes through my door and into my neighbor's car, house, etc. Would most policies cover their damages? Thanks, for a great thread!
  20. I called them last month because they raised my bill by $9. I said "What can you do to keep me from looking at the Direct TV web site tonight"? They gave me Digital Cable TV, Phone, and Internet for $99 for one year. I told them I really didn't need the phone since we have been using cellular only for a year, so that wasn't a big deal for me. So they threw in HBO too. Add my HD and DVR and I'm about $1 less than what I was paying before they raised my rate, so it's pretty much a wash. But the point is I didn't get my bill raised. Also, does anyone else think that the DVR is the best thing since hollowpoint cartridges? I don't think I can watch TV without it anymore. I usually goof off for about the first 15 minutes of a program now while pausing the show, then fast forward through the commercials. I can record shows without having to worry about a tape. It's just awesome.
  21. Ah, yes. I'm familiar with the practice, just didn't know what it was called. Thanks for clearing that up.
  22. Please excuse my ignorance, but what does this mean?
  23. I just carry a Phased Plasma Rifle in the 40-Watt range
