I carry a G30 and a G21 - I like Golden Saber but truly, any good JHP from a well-known major manufacturer should do fine, both for weapon dependability as well as for its need as a SD round. Never carry anything other than JHP and never carry anything other than factory loaded. Now, since the vast majority of us will never have to discharge our weapon for our own self-protection, the above sentence may seem immaterial. However, if you ever do have to discharge your weapon to protect your life but you and your attorney will be very happy if you followed the advice about factory loaded JHPs.

Oh....so it WAS me! Damn. LOL

Happy Thanksgiving to all here on TGO and their family. One of the things I am thankful for is TGO and those I've met through TGO...some of the best folks around (even the ones I occasionally disagree with). ;)

Opinion on defending your chickens
RobertNashville replied to THneo's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I doubt there is a legal issue for shooting a dog that is on your property; especially a dog that has jumped a fence to get there and even more especially given that the dog was attacking your livestock. As was suggested, however, it sure wouldn't hurt to talk with the local law enforcement agency to see if there would be any legal trouble. Personally, I don't know that I could shoot a dog unless my own life or another person's life is in danger but that's just me. One final thought; just because there may be no legal issues with shooting a don in the situation you had, that of course doesn't mean that the dog's owner might not sue you and even if he loses or only wins a few dollars from you it could be a big hassle. -
I have a lot to be thankful for every day.
RobertNashville replied to TerryW's topic in General Chat
I think all of us, and I really do mean ALL of us have much to be thankful for; even if we are going though difficult times...even if things seem impossible. This has been a hard year for me and one I'm very glad to see coming to a close yet I am blessed and I know that I am. We live in what is still the greatest country the world has ever known; it may still yet return to its full greatness and potential but even if it doesn't there is no place I would rather live (and I've been in many, many countries over the years)...I have good friends...friends I can truly count on and as Clarance wrote George Baily on the inside cover of the Mark Twain book that showed up in the money basket; "No man is a failure who has friends". I'm spending Thanksgiving with some of those friends in Knoxville this year...the last time I haven't been "home" with family on Thanksgiving was 1980; that year I was stationed at Bangor Submarine Base (Washington) and my wife and I decided not to make the trip back to Ohio that year. Other than that and a couple of overseas deployments during the late 70's I've always been home for Thanksgiving. This year, my Mom is gone now (my dad passed i 2001) so this Thanksgiving is "different". I hope every fellow TGO member has a great Thanksgiving. . -
I'm glad we can agree on something, Dave :) Let me say, though, that I don't really have an opinion of "HIM"; I don't know and don't really care if he is a wonderful person of a low-life SOB...to me, that has nothing to do with whether someone is or isn't guilty of a crime they've been accused of.

You bought my G31 I believe...I had two, one was the gun I shot and the other was a THP commerative edition (Serial No. THP003)
-
The .357 Sig round is an excellent round with superior penetration (one of the reasons, I believe, that THP carries it). I loved my Glocks that used the caliber but I eventually decided to condense the various calibers I had for handguns to only 45 ACP or 10MM. Had I not made that decision I would still have semi-autos that used the .357 Sig!

How you got any of that ^^^ out of what I said is odd to say the least; I can only surmise that you either didn't actually read what I wrote or that you purposely ignored what I wrote to justify the above comment. The race-baiters/those I was referring to should have been obvious...those who only cared that a "white-Hispanic shot a "black boy" which included about 99% of the media and especially the likes of Sharpton, Jackson, and their ilk, and those who who scrubbed sweet little Trayvon's social media pages to make him look like a sweet little 12 year old baby-faced boy...I was talking about those who ONLY cared that a black boy was shot by a non-black....the people who ignored an uncannily similar situation except that it was a black man who shot a white boy...the people for whom EVERYTHING is about race regardless of and often in spite of the facts. All that to say, when I mentioned "race-baiters" in my original post, I wasn't including or even thinking about anyone here on TGO. I never said anything about knowing "more about the facts"...I was explaining why I supported Zimmerman in the Zimmerman/Martin case in that the facts indicated to me that Zimmerman's use of deadly force was justified and that he shouldn't have been charged. Apparently the jury thought so as well.
-
I and I believe most of us who "defended" Zimmerman in the Martin shooting did so for two primary reasons. 1) was that it was evident very early on that him being charged at all was predicated on race-baiting politics and a shopped-for DA rather than evidence that the shooting was anything other than what it was; self-defense (and the information that has come out since the trial form folks such as the original investigating officers, etc. has shown that to be exactly the case) 2) The other reason was that the evidence that was known before the trial suggested to me that he simply was not guilty and the evidence presented during the trial removed any doubts I may have had beforehand. However, claims to the contrary not withstanding, to the best of my recollection, neither I or anyone else on TGO who believed he was being railroaded then ever tried to confer sainthood on him or make him a poster boy for responsible firearm use. We just believed that the charges were bogus and that he was not guilty; positions that I would suggest were the right positions based on the facts and the verdict. With regards to these current charges, that's pretty much all we have...charges. Maybe I'm weird with but I don't put a lot of stock in "charges" and I'm not going to support or crucify anyone just because he/she got charged with something. If a lot of evidence comes out with this latest case that shows his guilt or innocence then I would support or condemn him based on that evidence. What I will not do is try to crucify the man based on charges alone as some here seem more than willing to do. Bottom line is, there is nothing to "join in" on except for those who just want to pile on Zimmerman and/or who want to pontificate about the "facts" of a case they actually know nothing about.

In the case of this thugs mind; mostly air. -
I currently have one 10MM in 1911 platform, a Dan Wesson. It's a much better shooter than my Double Eagle ever was but I'm considering selling it too. I've pretty much become convinced that the Glock 20 is the best platform for 10MM. I suspect that if you give this DE to your nephew he'll end up not liking the 10MM round when it's actually the gun that's the weak link.
-
I hate to be negative here but I bought a Cold Double Eagle 10MM in 1992; sold it in 1997. I love Colt and I love 10MM but that particular marriage with Cold officiating just didn't work to well. The frame just wasn't beefed up enough for the round (IMHO) and if I recall, the trigger/trigger guard was a problem as well. That said, I don't think you are going to find the kind of offers you would like or think you should get. I'm not saying it's a bad gun but I think the problems it had has and will continue to depress its value.

Good SHTF Survival Fiction Books
RobertNashville replied to plank white's topic in Survival and Preparedness
Not sure if it's been mentioned here yet or not but once I finished the most recent in the "Holding Their Own" series and while waiting for the next installment of it and 299 days, I picked up "Apocalypse Drift"...I'm about 60% through it and have enjoyed it so far. -
Are "God Given" Rights the Pervue of the Government?
RobertNashville replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
And to rectify this situation for yourself, what exactly do you propose the country and each State do; draft a new Constitution once or twice a year to so that all those who have reached the age of accountability can have their input or otherwise, "they can't be bound to a contract they had no say in"? I'm pretty happy with the constitution as it was written and with most, although perhaps not all of the amendments (even though I wasn't there for any of them to give my input)...seems to me a lot of the problems we have now in this country is precisely all those who don't want to be bound by the Constitution; especially those such as the current POTUS, half of SCOTUS, the DOJ, etc. -

Training. How seriously do we take it?
RobertNashville replied to jaredsterry's topic in Training Discussions
I suspect most enthusiasts take training seriously but I often wonder how many firearm owners (but not enthusiasts) do not. I started hunting when I was about 8 years old (with a bolt action 410 shotgun) have owned firearms for most of my life yet I would by lying if I said I always trained on a regular basis. Not long ago, I read an article in Concealed Carry magazine regarding the difference between an firearm owner/collector and someone who owns a firearm/firearms for self defense/protection, etc. The purpose was not to disparage one over the other; just point out there there is a difference and that some folks who believe they are the latter are really the former. A rule of thumb the author proposed as a way to identify the more serious self-defense firearm owner was for him/her to have at least one training certificate for every five firearms owned...seems like a reasonable measure to me. About ten years ago I made an agreement with myself that I would take at least two formal training courses each year and on average, I've done a good job of keeping that promise to myself but I wish I had the time, money and physical strength to take a class each month...I simply don't have enough of any of those three things! Anyway; thanks to the OP for a great post! -
I remember that day well...I was in the third grade. We knew something was wrong...teachers were crying and it was a very somber mood. Finally, the word got around that the President had been shot and we were closing school early. Then, several days of watching Walter Cronkite on the news going over all that had happened and the arrangements for President Kennedy's funeral and burial. I watched live TV when Oswald was shot by Ruby. Quite a lot for a 9 year old to take in. It was not until 2008 that I visited Arlington National Cemetery to see the grave of JFK and the eternal flame...it's still a sad event in our nation's history and in my life. RIP John F. Kennedy...we were a better country then and we would be better today if our current leaders were more like you.

Two weeks ago today, I adopted an 18 month old male basset hound through Belly Rubs Basset Hound Rescue. I just couldn't go without a hound any longer. :) His name is Wally and he has an interesting story... About five weeks ago, an elderly couple who live in Lenoir City were RV camping up in the Smokies when they saw this dog wandering toward them. He went to the door of their RV and whined like he wanted to be let in. Being dog lovers themselves they obediently opened the door at which point this hound went inside, promptly jumped up on the sofa and went to sleep! He was a bit of mess, dirty and tick infested...they washed him up in their on board shower and dealt with the ticks as best they could and too him to their vet to get fully rid of the ticks. That's when they contacted the rescue organization. They named his Wally and I decided it's a good name for him! We don't know much about him but it was obvious that he had been on his own for a while. He is negative for heart worms which was a big relief but he was positive for worms which he's been treated for and we are also treating him for a couple of bacterial infections (ears, toenails and positive for a tick born disease; all of which is very common to basset hounds and especially in Tennessee) but overall, he's a pretty healthy boy. Based on his teeth, my vet believes he is not older than 18 months. He's already made himself quite at home here and quite at home with me...I still miss my girl Millie and I suspect I always will but Wally is a great hound and already a good friend! If you have or ever had a dog who has made you laugh, brightened your life, and every day silently accepted your tears without judgment, snuggled with you, forgiven your faults and loved unconditionally - dogs are a gift that most of us don't deserve!

Traffic road block asking for DNA samples??
RobertNashville replied to peejman's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Sounds like the Forth Worth police department is doing the right thing...too bad it's rather moot at this point as many people's rights were already violated and I doubt there is any recourse for them at this point. -
Traffic road block asking for DNA samples??
RobertNashville replied to peejman's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
The bigger question is, what would happen if someone just refused to stop? Would the officers start shooting? Chase you down and pull you over even thought they aren't even sworn officers? What would be the correct thing to do? As soon as you open your window your "breath" is being "searched" and you don't even know it. And so what if you have alcohol on your breath...having had a drink at some point in the day or evening is not equal being legally impaired? I don't mind being stopped by an actual LEO if he as legal reason to do so (probable cause) but anything less than that is goes fare beyond the pale no matter how "voluntary" they claim it is...this stinks so much I can smell it in Tennessee all the way from Forth Worth TX. -
I'm not sure where best to post this question but maybe someone who frequents this forum can help. I'm looking for recommendations for shooting ranges in/near the Huntsville area. Indoor probably preferred as it looks like it's going to be a bit cold next Monday (which is when I'll be down there). My First Sgt buddy who is leaving in a few days for his next posting (Hawaii) and I are going to meet up one last time before he and his family head out for what will likely be his last posting before he retires. Any suggestions appreciated...thanks!!!

Police forces/law enforcement agencies are not supposed to be military units. However, from my perspective; it's the mindset, mission and tactics employed that determines whether an agency is acting as a "military" unit or civilian law enforcement, not the equipment. Will the police use "military grade" equipment to just go in and kill people with little or no regard to collateral damage and casualties or will they use such equipment to be safe and to respond to the level of force they are encountering? I'm sure most of us remember the bank robbery in LA years ago when the robbers were equipped with body armor and automatic weapons while the police had shotguns and revolvers and were hopelessly outgunned. Would anyone here suggest that LE should be limited to .38 SPC wheel guns and pump 12ga shotguns today? As with most technology (be it electronic, mechanical or anything else), it's how it's used and who uses it that really matters isn't it? It seems to me that a corrupt, out of control LEO or a corrupt, out of control LE Agency is going to be dangerous to citizens and citizen's rights regardless of what kind of equipment they have access to; that is what we should be concerned with...not what kind of vehicles or helicopters they have.
