  1. Journalism is nearly dead. News media people just can't/won't put in the time necessary to do proper research. I read the USAToday, it seems less inflammatory than some. A lot of their editorials can be rather left, but I usually skip those. I very rarely read anything political. I also read the BBC. The British perspective on US events can be interesting, and they cover world events without the US political slant. I don't do any social media or TV news programs.
  2. A few feet if you want to watch them fight over the feeders. I have 2 about 6 feet apart in the back and 1 by itself in the front. Nectar is 4:1 water to sugar by volume. The water only has to be warm enough to make the sugar dissolve. Once temps are in the mid 80s, it only lasts 3-5 days before going rancid. Highly recommend some sort of ant moat to keep them out.
  3. Be patient. It can take a few weeks for the birds to find them and start using them. It's also breeding season so they're eating more bugs than nectar, they need the protein for their young.
  4. This. Its really fast steel wool. Car wax is a good idea. I usually just wipe down with a lightly oiled rag. We were at my wife's granddads house yesterday doing yard work (he's 97). He's got a few hand tools in need of similar attention.
  5. I try to avoid the rain as well, and I agree on the rain gear. If it's the usual summer showers, it's better to just get a little wet than go sous vide in the rain gear. Once the shower passes, you'll be dry again pretty fast. Riding in the wet will also make you a smoother rider. Decent tires provide a lot more grip than most people think in the wet, just gotta be smooth.
  6. Since I'm getting old, I increased the font size default on my phone so its easier to read. The font size in this window while I type is noticeably larger than it was before. But once I post it, the font reverts back to the original smaller size, as are all the other posts in the thread. Some folks with unique fonts are different sizes, but the default is still pretty small. The typical zoom with 2 fingers thing doesn't work. Ideas?
  7. October may be too late, but I think you're good for now.
  8. Dragonflies breed in still or slow moving water and eat bugs. So you need a nearby pond and neighbors who don't spray their yard with insecticide.
  9. Wish they'd taken a picture and released it. I bet that fish was old.
  10. My wife saw one at our house this afternoon.
  11. My college buddy Mike designed most of the front end. I'll pass along the complement.
  12. My parents in Chattanooga have seen a few.
  13. Buddy at work calls it "salve". It gets used extensively as you might guess. My youngest was headed in that direction... he mixes mayo and ketchup for fries. A few days ago he put a ridiculous amount of mayo on his burger. I called him out on it and he just grinned. An hour later he was whining about being hungry. I asked how that could be since he'd just eaten a big burger. He said he didn't eat it, too much mayo.
  14. Wheels through Time is worth the trip. Traffic shouldn't be horrible mid-week provided you miss the usual busy times.
  15. I think we're all guilty of occasionally painting whatever group with a similar brush. Stereotypes do exist for a reason, but that doesn't mean those who typify a stereotype represent the majority of that group, nor do we have to be beholden to them. Evaluating people individually is the right thing to do, but it takes more time than most people are willing to invest.
  16. Yep. I still have an ETR shirt.
  17. Saw this on ADV..... small world.
  18. Gangs, drugs, and assaults are symptoms. They won't go away until we understand the problem(s). Understanding won't be easy and fixing will be even harder. Coming to the table unwilling to compromise accomplishes nothing.
  19. Yes. We must have effective debate on differing ideas. The end goals are likely very similar, it the path to get there that's different. No one has an air tight position, there are flaws or pitfalls in any path. Debating with a mirror, preaching to the choir, etc. does not build consensus. If one group thinks the others are incompetent, there will be no resolution.
  20. Happy Easter folks! He is risen!
  21. Make sure you know the different between a common snapping turtle and an alligator snapping turtle. Alligator snappers are considered rare in TN.
  22. Yep. We had to get a new couch about a year ago. Furniture stores seem to do most of their business with these high rent interior design groups who decorate the McMansions popping up everywhere. I'm sure those designers are getting a big price cut based on the volume they move.
  23. My house was tested when I bought and I recall the result was very low, almost immeasurable.
  24. Didn't know automatic vents were a thing. Interesting.
