Anybody know a reputable transmission shop in Nashville?
peejman replied to mikadosoft's topic in General Chat
I know of couple places in east TN. And yes, the rebuild will be very close to the value of the car. Unless it's in excellent shape, I'd think real hard about it. How many miles on the car and how many miles since last fluid change? What did the old fluid look like? I have a '98 SL2 (5-spd)... 170k and counting. Here's an occasionally useful reference... If she's the shy type, rent a .22 at the range for her to plink with. Show her how to operate the gun(s) and let her dry fire them at home before you go. Make some custom targets with pictures she'd like to punch a few holes in (her boss, Martha Stewart, you, ...) If she's the competitive type, try a few drills to keep it interesting.

This. If you're worried about "larger 4 legged creatures", carry a larger gun. If the hide on a bear (or similar) clogs up a JHP and prevents expansion, it functions just like a FMJ anyway.

Yes, your fuel gauge lies to you. Some fuel gauges are calibrated non-linearly on purpose. The gauge is set to stay on "full" for a while. Otherwise, people complain that "I just filled up yesterday and it's already down to 3/4 tank". The fact that they never got it "full" in the first place and it really is down to 3/4 tank is beyond their comprehension. So to keep those morons from whining and taking their car back to the dealer, and then being pissed when they're told nothing is wrong... the gauge lies. It stays near full longer than it should, then zooms to a little less than 3/4 tank. It's fairly accurate through the middle of the range. Then zooms from 3/8 tank to 1/8 tank and then slows a bit. This is intentional to make it look lower than it is so you'll buy gas before running out, and prevent those same morons from going back to the dealer complaining that their car ran out of gas before the gauge was on "E".

I have the safety glasses similar to what's sold at walmart. It took a couple iterations to determine which style doesn't fog up and which fits under my ear muffs the best.

Hahaha! love that movie! Anyway.... given that 5 out of 10 marriages fail, it's no surprise that 4 of those 5 who failed don't want to do it again. There used to be a social stigma associated with divorce. That's gone now so people don't feel any sort of pressure to try to save a failing marriage. The only thing more expensive than marriage, is divorce.

No different than buying any other used gun. Do your homework and haggle, haggle, haggle.

I was in the middle of doing it on the kitchen table when the Kirby vacuum salesman came to my door several years ago. I invited him in, and enjoyed watching him squirm throughout his sales pitch while I stroked the bore. At the end of his little talk, I told him that if I was going to spend that much money on something that sucked, it was d_mn sure going to suck more than my carpet.

Heh, my Dad is the same way. They grew up in a age when car gas tanks were uncoated steel, gas pumps didn't have 5 micron filters, and gas gauges weren't as accurate. There would be lots of gunk in the bottom of the gas tank that you didn't want sucked into the fuel system, hence never let it run below 1/4 tank. I replaced the in-tank fuel pump in my '87 Pontiac with 175,000 miles about 10 years ago. When I pulled the tank, I was shocked to find only a tiny bit of debris inside. HA! A coworker took a rental car down to -28 miles till empty while traveling on business several years ago. And yes, it was still running when we pulled into the gas station.

Just be sure you get one with a relatively short barrel... 20" max. The typical "sporting" shotgun barrels are nearly impossible to manage effectively indoors.

I put 18.8 gallons in an 18 gallon tank at 3am Saturday night in BFE middle TN when I was in college. I drove through 3 towns trying to find an open gas station on my way back to school. That wasn't fun.

Airport screening, going wayyyy too far.

While I don't necessarily agree with the pat down procedures, I hope you all continue flying on a regular basis. It's crucial to my continued employment. -
On the somewhat rare occasions in which I take my gun riding, I keep it in the tank bag in a thumb-break holster. I'm also somewhat the gear nazi and wear a full-face, boots, gloves, and either a leather jacket, leather/tex jacket or 1pc leather suit. I've tried, and I can't use my gun effectively while wearing my riding gloves, they don't fit in the trigger guard. So I'd have to ditch the gloves and fish the gun out of the bag to deploy it. Not exactly speedy. I also have no desire to fall on my gun if I go down. My best defense is my right wrist. Twist and go.

Functionally, there's no difference between the sizes. For normal driving, the larger wheel diameter (and proportionally shorter/stiffer tire side-wall and increased unsprung mass) will make the ride worse, if anything. There's also a considerable difference in cost between 16" tires and 18" tires (larger tires = more $$). Unless you just like the look of the bigger wheels, I'd seek out one with 16" wheels. YMMV.

CC at work - Small Business, GM and owner say its ok
peejman replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Perhaps trivial wasn't the best word. I guess I'm of the "if you're going to do it, do it all the way" inclination. Getting a gun to collect dust in your desk drawer seems pointless to me. Legal, but pointless. -

I agree that the state requirements are very weak. However, for that reason obtaining an HCP seems like step 1 to me. I'm quite sure there's lots of people out there who don't have an HCP and are much better shots than me. But it seems to me that if someone can't be bothered to accomplish something as trivial as getting the permit, what would motivate them to pursue it to any degree of competency? -

Personally, I wouldn't want someone who isn't serious about it to have a gun handy at work. It's a serious decision that needs to be thought through. If she's serious about it, she needs to get her HCP. It's not a decision to be made lightly. Get her to read this.... Like a Cornered Cat And I think you've hit on an excellent idea for her Christmas bonus. -
+1 on the Airweights being very, very sucky range guns. I'm glad I talked my wife into renting one first. The LCR has a MUCH better trigger.

Based on the appearance, these look like the safety glasses I wear every day at work. The styling is ok, they're just a little big for my apparently narrow face. Speaking of that... Is there any sort of standard sizing for glasses? I see some brands list their styles by size, but there's no definition of how to determine what's small vs. large.

Does this classify as a pistol? It doesn't have a shoulder stock...

Next time I'm near a Sunglasses Hut or similar place, I'll have plenty in mind to try out. I have to try on sunglasses. Same with some LCD screens.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into all these. The $20 walmart glasses function just fine, their durability is the problem. They scratch very easily and I've broken 2 pairs recently. I've found that the polarized lenses cut glare significantly and let me get away with less tint in the lens. Saves lots of time searching for "super dark" tinted glasses.

I'd like your suggestions for brands/types of sunglasses. I'm one of those lucky people with light-sensitive eyes. I'm nearly helpless w/o sunglasses in the summer, hence I wear them a lot. Lately I've been using the wal-mart cheapies, and clearly have been getting what I'm paying for. I prefer polarized, scratch resistant, polycarbonate lenses with reasonable side coverage. I don't know that I can justify $200 Oakleys, much as I'd like to have a pair. I'd like to keep them in the $100 or less range. Suggestions?
