  1. If you have a 1956 Model 94 in the shape you describe, you paid close to the going rate in this area. Maybe even a little high but I paid nearly that much for '58 vintage '94 in darn near perfect shape. Other parts of the country are a different story.
  2. Memphismason, Thanks for the taste of Chet. Sure miss him.
  3. It's been 8 weeks for me. The urge still hits me like a truck now and then but it's easier to say no. And the urges are fewer and farther apart as the time goes by.
  4. Just one time -- Metro Nashville officer. No trouble at all, not even a flinch. And he let me roll on with just a warning.
  5. I'm kinda all over the map on this one. My carry guns are semi-automatics but not hi-caps by any measure. I have a plastic-fantastic that stays in the house for my wife. But I've recently bought a Colt SAA that I love so I'm suddenly into wheel guns. And on top of that I got a pre '64 Winchester 94 simply because I wanted one so I'm into lever actions too. I don't fit all that well into any one category, but I marked semi-autos.
  6. In my experience it works very well though a little sloppy to handle. No negative issues at all on a hard working gun. Just don't put it on a gun that's going to sit for an extended period because eventually it will turn into a sticky gum. I'd certainly recommend it to someone shooting competition.
  7. I just recently purchased a long gun I've been wanting since I was a kid -- a really nice pre '64 Winchester '94 in .30-.30. Yep, I paid too much but I finally got tired of waiting for the perfect deal. Actually, it's the only long gun I have now.
  8. I think it's equally troubling that we are allowing history to be rewritten, something you would associate more with re-education camps and right-think. It's pretty scary stuff when people begin to incrementally rewrite history. I think it's happining today in our educational system. Historical correctness is taking a back seat to political correctness. History is history. What happened happened and it's all important whether it offends our sensibilities or not. And exactly who are we afraid of offending with truth?
  9. This story certainly has legs. It's even gone international. Keep in mind that the above description of the event is a news release to be sent to news outlets, evidently by the school. In other words, it's spin. It may all be perfectly accurate but it certainly seems a significant number of students who attended the event describe what happened very differently than what is in the release. I don't think this story is over yet.
  10. What if ... just thinking here ... you could strike a sort of compromise with administrators while the big battle for campus carry is going on? Like, maybe, still forbid campus carry but minimize the penalty for doing so. Sort of a nudge-nudge wink-wink compromise that would allow you to carry but also allow the administrators to save face until legislation "forces" them to accept campus carry. Life would be a lot safer and you're only risking a slap on the wrist.
  11. Wasn't there supposed to be an opinion poll on their site regarding the pending legislation? I didn't see one. And concerning the handgun permit list, how about us recruiting all the major gun owner sites to weigh in with e-mails and letters to the editor. They've done a good job in the past jumping on local papers. If I wasn't so computer illiterate (cutting, pasteing and all) I'd grab the ball. THR, The Firing Line and maybe Combat Carry could generate a lot of traffic for us. Also, if you haven't contacted your legislators, it's time.
  12. It's just my name. It means, ummmm ... Great Mystic. Yeah, that's it.

Marswolf, sorry to say I never heard of Mr. Hale. Sounds like someone I would have enjoyed meeting. I did know Chet and I miss him greatly. I have a J-45 he played and signed for me. For awhile I worked artist relations for Gibson and I became familier with some of the luthiers in town. I'm the guy Bill Monroe called to pick up his mandolin when it got trashed with a fire poker. It was in two black garbage sacks, smashed to bits. And I can understand Hale not wanting to make a guitar for Willie. Willie's been given free guitars by every maker in the country and still prefers to play that old beat up gut string with the hole in it.

I made "music business" purposely vague. I was a musician for a variety of artists in and out of the studio for some 25 years. Then I road managed and ran the music publishing for a good friend and artist (please don't send me any songs, har, har). I still road manage when he goes on the road and currently I'm also animating music videos for him. Oh, and I wrote quite a few songs long ago with my fair share of cuts (none of which would build me a house). I've been particularly blessed in this business for a kid who moved here from Warr Acres, Oklahoma over 30 years ago. Now you see why I just put down music business. I liked the drummer joke. You can insert drummer, bass player, or banjo player with most any of those jokes. I'd tell you my favorite banjo player joke but it would take too long.:
  15. I'm in the Bellevue area too. It's a nice mall that has been going into the dumper. I hope this deal gets done. I think it will save that mall. Honestly, I don't buy much at Bass Pro Shop except clothes and that's a pretty long drive. I just wish someone would open a range out this way.

    what do you do?

Music business for the last 30+ years. It's been a heck of a fun ride but I'm getting off this horse before long and do some serious hanging out. I have three grandkids to spoil.
  17. I'm glad to see a topic meant to be light and humorous remain so. It speaks highly of our membership here. I shoot a 1911 but I've missed the last coupla JMB worship services. It may be time for an intervention, at least a visitation from the local congregation. I'm just glad everybody here is carrying something that goes bang.
  18. Personally I'm not big on joining groups, paying dues, secret handshakes or whatever. Our potential for rapid growth lies within this open forum of like minded individuals. Power is in the numbers. A big rowdy bunch of irregulars flooding our politicians with e-mails and phone calls will, I believe, do more good than a small group with a pretty letterhead. Sure we can get together, organize shoots, whatever we want. We can call the TFA and say, "Hey, you want some big numbers backing you up on such and such legislation? Come to the forum and state your case. We'll help you flood those legislators." No meetings, no branch offices. Our meetings are here, every day, and everyone who wants can attend. There had been some very good ideas expressed but when it comes to influencing our representatives for change I think bigger is better.
  19. As I see it, a more likely scenerio would be the governor declaring a state of emergency after either a natural disaster or a large terrorist strike. He's already spoken of suspending the Bill of Rights and confiscating our guns in such a case. Hello National Guard. The federal courts would most likely overturn it, but what do you do in the meantime while some kids in uniform come trampling all over your uninfringable rights?
  20. I too sent the governor an e-mail respectfully expressing my concerns, pointing out the inconsistencies in the information released by his office. I said, surely he doesn't invision suspending the Bill of Rights in a time when they are most important. And I asked him to clarify his position on this matter once and for all.
  21. The region is going to remain a quagmire for many years to come. And until the American people are united in support of a conflict there will be no truly satisfactory conclusion. All the old definitions of victory don't apply here. Today's enemy does not adhere to any of the rules of warfare with which we saddle ourselves. The Geneva Convention? Forget it. The UN only expects the Americans to abide by it. (And, I might add, the American people as well.) I'm afraid it will take a cataclysmic event to terrify the population into supporting all out war. And that event will have been planned in, and delivered from, the region we're talking about. Will our troops being there have an effect on the timetable of such an event? I don't know.
  22. Yep, I'm a member. They're the big gorilla and the one organization feared by the anti-gunners and politicians alike. In politics size matters. The NRA is simply too big to allow our detractors from labeling gun owners as "a fringe group" with any success. And, no, I don't contribute every time I get a mailing.
  23. I used to go to Guns & Leather almost weekly. I lived up there. Now I live in Bellevue and there isn't much out this way. I shoot outdoors at the Davidson County Sportsman's Club but even that's a pretty good drive. I'm keeping my eyes open for a shooter out this way who owns land.
  24. I agree with waynesan. This is very valuable information. Thanks, Len.
