  1. We've got a Hostess plant here in town and now we've got 280 more people without jobs.
  2. I am not in the market for an AK. I was only curious because I saw this **NEW ARSENAL AK** and I'm always reading posts by people saying Arsenal is the best, everything else stinks. It gets to the point where I wonder how many people have experience shooting Arsenal built AKs and how many just hype them up, especially over on AR15.com and theakfiles. I would love for there to be a place where you could try different makes and models of AKs instead of just reading about them or watching Youtube videos. The local range here only rents handguns. ETA: It appears the consensus is get a Saiga and convert it yourself. That sounds like a fun project farther down the road for me.
  3. I just saw at Atlantic Firearms that Arsenal has a new milled AK out for right under a grand and that got me thinking of all the times I see people state that Arsenal is the best. I don't have any experience with an Arsenal-made AK, so are they really what they're hyped up to be, accuracy and quality of parts wise or in any other area? I'm hoping someone here has shot one more than just a little to answer this.
  4. The whole thing looks wierd to me. I traded for that stock. It's ugly but very functional. Also, that hogue stock is VERY comfortable to shoot.
  5. Honestly, I don't know a whole lot about Gore's legislation so I cannot say much about it. Politicians are motivated by profits so I'm always suspicious of them. They will say and do whatever it takes to get more money. What I do know is that carbon pollution is a real threat and it has real consequences. Coal, although not the only fuel, is cheap and plentiful and a great source of energy, but it is dirty. I think a carbon tax is a good thing because industries need to take responsibility for the damage they're causing with carbon pollution. I hope this isn't a bad exmaple: Your neighbor continuously waters his lawn so much that it floods yours. The water gets into your garage, your yard is mud, and your wife can't grow any flowers in the yard. Would you tell him to stop? Hopefully with the taxes collected from industrial pollution, we can fund projects and research to clean up this mess whether it concerns the industries, the land, or the people. However, with politicians that usually isn't the case. It seems like no one is truly for the people anymore. When I went to college, I didn't know what I wanted to do or study so I chose Environmental Science. The courses I took along with the research we conducted changed my view on people and life on this planet. While the work I do doesn't have anything to do with my degree, the lessons I learned still work on me. Edited for grammar.
  6. He's fighting for what he believes is right. Isn't that what we've been taught to do? It's understandable that it gets annoying when people don't shut up about things. A carbon tax for big industries is probably a good thing in the end.
  7. One thing I've noticed is that the barrel is only 22 inches which is shorter than it supposed to be. Won't the measurements be off if I add an original rear sight? I shot this rifle yesterday and was very happy with the accuracy (or is it precision?), whether it be to the Williams ghost ring or to having a great barrel. Unlike with the original Mauser sights, I was able to pull off followup shots a bit faster and definitely easier, but I suppose I need to shoot a Mauser with original sights more often. Anyway, here are some pics of how it stands now. 8. Thanks NRA, but that link doesn't work. I'll try to search for it on that site.
  9. I ordered a rear sight base from Numrich without actually seeing any pictures. When it arrived it was bare stamped metal and I don't believe that is correct for this rifle. That's why I just went ahead with the Williams. I might just have to put this project aside for the next year or so.
  10. I think you need 250 posts to change your title
  11. I like threads like this. Thanks for sharing.
  12. So a gunsmith could sweat a rear sight base back on the rifle? Would it have the same bonding strength? This is a 1943 BNZ Mod 98 with what looks like waAR under the eagles. There's a P under the serial number, a BNZ 1 shield on the barrel as well as "aw".
  13. How do I replace the sight? From what I've been reading, it's not practical to resweat the rear sight base back on. I'd rather not d&t the receive but I'm not a fan of the Williams peep sight. I have been looking at some stocks on Gunbroker, but I don't know much about the stocks to know which is correct. This is a 43 BNZ 1 k98. Also, this is not a rifle I plan to resell. This is going to be a shooter.
  14. I have an all-matching K98 with one problem. Someone removed the rear sight assembly. I put a Williams firesight on it, but it just doesn't appeal to me. What are some things you would do to it? ETA: It's an all matching barrelled action. No stock, so I put a hogue stock on it.
  15. I was out with the girl I was dating at the time and she put her arm around my waist as we were walking and she said ooooh as in glue but without the gl. I didn't tell her I was carrying because it never crossed my mind, but she sure found out and she really liked it. It all depends on the girl.
  16. Nothing really changed when I shot today. I fired 3 rounds from each of my 3 magazines, so 9 rounds total. I shot at a cardboard milk carton that was 50 yards away. When I checked the target there were only 8 holes. I know that first shot missed because I never saw an impact. The only things I did to the rifle were to tighten the v-block bolts because they were a little loose and put the earplug in the barrel channel. I also noticed that my shots shifted right. I wonder if that's because of the earplug or just bad technique. No wind was blowing while shooting. I checked the tops of the magazine and there were no signs of the bolt scraping across them any more than necessary to chamber the next round.
  17. I did not remount the barrel tonight because I couldn't get it out. However, this is what it looks like in the receiver. Like I said, it's run like this since I first put the barrel in without any hiccups. I'm guessing then that it's OK the way it is. I will tighten the v-block bolts a little more and hopefully that might smooth things out. I'll also put the earplug in the stock, but I'm wondering if that will solve the problem with the first round being way off. ETA: I will shoot it tomorrow and report back. 18. Here is a bit of an update: I decide I would remount the barrel and the first thing I noticed was that the v-block bolts were not very tight. They must have worked themselves loose. Should I locktite them? Second, I noticed that the barrel sticks into the receiver by 3/32 of an inch. When I first installed the barrel, I didn't have any go gauges and I didn't have a gunsmith look at it. I believe I just followed some directions I found on youtube or some forum. It's fired just fine with zero hiccups so I guess this was ok, but was it correctly installed? Do I really need to torque the v-block bolts to 28lbs/in or will hand tightening work?
  19. After all this, I will only sell to TN residents. I don't care if the gun sells or not, so I'm not out of anything. The whole thing stank. He was willing to drive from St. Louis and spend $100+ in gas instead of paying $30 s&h + $50? transfer fee.
  20. I think I talked to a secretary, honestly. I don't think she understood what I was talking about, but she could tell I had a bad gut feeling about this thing and told me to go with it, that the situation just didn't seem right.
  21. Ok. Now I am confused. I called the St. Louis ATF office and spoke to someone there and this is a brief summary of what they said: It is legal for me to sell him the firearm if he comes to TN. However, the fact that he does not want to go through an FFL is suspcisous and a good reason not to sell anything to him. I had decided not to sell to him after my posts here, but I really wanted confirmation on what the law was and I'm still not sure lol. Better safe than sorry.
