No it is not a personal carry permit and will not function as such. You can take it in conjunction with your HCP, but you will have to take the other half of the course and the shooting requirements will be that of the armed guard class.

I have both An Armed Guard Certification, and an HCP. I got both at the same time. If you do it that way, the classroom portion adds additional information regarding laws pertaining to and powers of Armed Guards, and your qualifying weapons are recorded.

As a HCP holder, you may not work as an Armed Guard, and you may carry any weapon you choose. As an Armed Guard, you may only carry weapons with which you have qualified. Also, an Armed Guard License only allows you to be armed while at your jobsite, and while in direct transit to and from your domicile and your jobsite. (If you make any intermediary stops, you are unlawfully carrying a weapon, unless you also have an HCP.)

The Armed Guard certification meets the requirements to get an HCP.

From T.C.A. 39-17-1351:

(e) The department shall also require an applicant to submit proof of the successful completion of a department approved handgun safety course. The course shall include both classroom hours and firing range hours. An applicant shall not be required to comply with the firing range and classroom hours requirements of this subsection (e) if the applicant submits proof to the department that within five (5) years from the date the application for a handgun carry permit is filed the applicant has:

Successfully completed the firearms training course required for armed security guard/officer registration, pursuant to § 62-35-118(:D; or

Just remember, Armed Guard renewal takes place every 2 yrs, and you have to requalify. HCP renewal is every 4 yrs. and only requires a fee.

ProguninTN is spot on. Good job, bro.

In addition to the Handgun Carry Permit class, I teach parts of the Armed Guard certification course, and do biannual recertifications, at the Academy of Self-Protection, in Joelton. Anyone interested in taking the class is encouraged to call either myself or ASP, and we'll be happy to answer any questions you might have.

ASP's website is www.academyofselfprotection.com .
