Smith and Wesson K-Frame Stuck Cylinder

Recommended Posts

Recent purchased a used model 64-4

When I brought it home, I took the side plate off, cleaned it up and put it all back together. When function testing, the cylinder sticks so badly I had to bump it to get it back out of the gun.

I put the cylinder assembly/yoke and cylinder release back in the frame as well as made sure to tighten the ejector rod.

To my dismay, it still sticks. Has anybody had this problem before and if so, how did you solve it?

This video is about excessive end shake, but also shows you how to check the gap between the cylinder and the forcing cone. If it's not in spec, you can have a tight gun. The last part shows how to remedy that. It's just a guess on my part, but the possibility is there. Otherwise, my 34-1 has a problem with the ejector rod coming loose and making it hard to open.

I have seen em lock up like that over a single flake of unburnt powder under the ejector star.

Have you checked the tightness of the plunger on the cylinder. This is the rod used for ejecting spent ammo. They just love to work loose. Open the cylinder , then put an empty shell case in one or more chambers. Holding the cylinder open and gripped in one hand to prevent turning see if the rod will spin. Just use your fingers not a wrench. Can’t remember if they are left or right hand thread. But if loose tighten it down.
